More espionage against America in the guise of journalism.

This is how I see the mentally deranged liberals in the mainstream media: betraying their own country, collaborating with the enemy, working hard for the defeat of our military and endangering the lives of American troops; all this just to take revenge on the man who they see in their sick and twisted minds as being "worse than Hitler" and who humiliated them in the last two Presidential elections

Traitor Seymour Hersh reveals covert US ops in Iran

The New Yorker magazine says Washington has escalated covert operations against Iran in a bid to destabilize the country's leadership.

In a report published in the online version of The New Yorker magazine, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has revealed that US Congressional leaders quietly agreed late last year to President Bush's funding request for a major escalation of covert operations against the Islamic Republic.

The article centers on a highly classified Presidential Finding which, by US law, must be made known to Senate leaders, the Democratic and Republican House and to ranking members of the intelligence committees.

“The Finding was focused on undermining Iran's nuclear ambitions and trying to undermine the government through regime change,” the article cited a person familiar with its contents as saying.

The finding also focused on working with the country's opposition groups and funneling money.

The article cites current and former military, intelligence and congressional sources as saying that $400 million was approved by congressional leaders for clandestine operations against Iran.

US Special Operations Forces have been conducting cross border operations from southern and southeastern Iraq since last year, the article said.

These have included seizing members of Iran's Qods force -- an arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps -- and taking them to Iraq for interrogation.

The operations also involved the pursuit, capture or killing of 'high-value targets' in the so-called war on terrorism, according to the article.

The Domino Fall

Wilmette Suspends Local Handgun Ban (IL)

NRA Files Suits In Chicago, Three Suburbs Challenging Gun Bans

Wilmette has suspended enforcement of its 19-year-old ordinance banning handgun possession in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that appears to invalidate such bans.

In a 5-4 decision, the court struck down Washington, D.C.'s ban on handguns, a prohibition similar to those used in several major cities, including Chicago, and a handful of suburbs including Wilmette, Evanston, Winnetka and Oak Park.

"The Law Department and the Police Department have suspended enforcement of the ordinance pending further review by the Village Board," Wilmette village attorney Tim Frenzer said Thursday. "Based on the decision today, at a minimum it calls into serious question the continued viability of the ordinance." Frenzer said questions remain about how directly the court's decision will impact local gun laws in Wilmette and other parts of the country. Washington is not a state, and each state has its own legal language governing the right to bear arms. "That aside, the opinion will require further review and discussion by the Village Board, but it's prudent at this point to suspend enforcement of it," Frenzer said. Wilmette's law, enacted in 1989, levied fines of up to $750 for handgun possession and allowed the village to seek a judge's order to have seized weapons destroyed.
Frenzer said he did not know exactly how many times the law has been invoked, but said its use is rare. The last case he recalls involved a 2003 incident in which a resident, Hale DeMar, was cited after using a handgun to shoot and wound a burglar in his home. The case mobilized state gun right groups and led to the passage of a law that gave gun owners a defense to local prohibitions if the weapon was used in self-defense. Wilmette's charges against DeMar were eventually dropped. He could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter declined to comment on the high court's ruling, saying he had not yet had a chance to read the decision or review it with village staff. NBC5's Phil Rogers reported that Wilmette was not the only community with big decisions to make in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision.

Six Chicago area communities: Wilmette, Winnetka, Evanston, Chicago, Oak Park and Morton Grove, have outright handgun bans, dating back to 1981, which are now apparently illegal. Eight other communities: Highland Park, Deerfield, Northbrook, River Grove, Westmont, Forest Park, Elk Grove Village and Niles, ban the sale or transfer of handguns within their city limits. On Friday, the Chicago Tribune called for the repeal of the Second Amendment. But barring that, Rogers reported, the Supreme Court's decision seems to leave little wiggle room for refinement of existing laws. "It's going to be very challenging, I think, for municipalities to hold on to the overall ban on a handgun," Frenzer said.

Judge Advises Crime Victim To Arm Herself After Attack;
Says No Longer Possible For Police To Protect Citizens

General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon said Friday that crime in Chattanooga "has become so rampant that it is no longer possible for the police department to protect our citizens."

He told a woman who had been pulled from her car and beaten in the head that she or her mother needed to "purchase a weapon, obtain a gun permit and learn to protect yourself." The woman moved back in with her mother after the May 4 incident on E. 17th Street.

Judge Moon said, "The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that all citizens have a right to purchase a weapon to defend themselves, their families and their homes - unless there is some disqualification that prevents them from owning a weapon."

"Asian" thug walks free after attacking priest

Ahhhhhhhhhh the religion of peace...

A drunken lout who viciously beat a priest on his church grounds in Shadwell
walked free from court yesterday.

Babul Islam, 19, and two other Asian youths (read peaceful muslims) levelled kicks and punched the 57-year-old clergyman in the head - one allegedly shouting ' f**king priest' as the blows reined down for six minutes.

'One off mistake'

Islam, of Limehouse, admitted being drunk (a drunk moslem??? whod'd thunk it?)but denied the assault in March was religiously motivated.

Judge Glenn Brasse agreed and concurred that his actions where a 'one off mistake.' (somebody tell Judge Glenn Gullible what "tayiqya" means in arabic)

His bruised and battered victim, Michael Ainsworth, spent two weeks in hospital (not that the infidel dog didn't deserved it). His face was swelled and bruised with deep cuts and two black eyes when he returned to his post at St George-in-the-Field Church.

The shop assistant was told he deserved a jail term but instead received a four-month suspended sentence, £1,000 compensation to Mr Ainsworth and 100 hours unpaid work (that's gonna teach him next time not to leave the kufar pig alive). Police initially investigated the assault as a faith hate crime.

A brick was thrown through the church window during mass previously as youths screamed 'this should be a mosque not a church.' Rev Alan Green, Dean of Tower Hamlets claimed there were 'faith hate' incidents in east London every month.

2nd Amendment Story: Heller Vs. DC in 10 Seconds Flat

Outraged Communist Mayor Wows To Fight Second Amendment

Seems the only answer Daley had today about the ruling on guns is RAISE TAXES on hard-working, law abiding citizens and give those millions of dollars to city lawyers in a pathetic attempt to overturn the constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

What a fugging loser! Why is this idiot still mayor of Chicago, beats me!

An “outraged” Mayor Daley this morning denounced a U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Washington D.C.’s handgun ban as a “frightening decision” and a “return to the days of the Wild West.”

Daley predicted that Chicago’s 1982 handgun freeze would be next in the crosshairs of the powerful gun lobby and that gun violence will surge if they’e successful.

The mayor said he would vigorously defend Chicago's gun ordinance despite the Supreme Court's ruling and feels the decision will make it far more difficult to protect law-abiding citizens.
The mayor said he would vigorously defend Chicago’s ordinance, in spite of what he called the dangerous precedent set by the nation’s highest court.

“This is a very frightening decision for America. …Does this lead to everyone having a gun in our society? If they think that’s the answer, then they’re greatly mistaken. Then, why don’t we do away with the court system and go back to the Old West? You have a gun and I have a gun and we’ll settle in the streets,” Daley told reporters at Navy Pier.
“I have no problems with those hunting, gun collectors….But, how do you get a gun into your house? Does it fly in by a stork? You purchase a gun. You carry the gun in a car. You come to your home. And we’ve shown time and time again how many children have been killed in their homes by guns. Parents are away, they get the guns….The child takes the gun, runs out in the street, has an argument, comes back and shoots somebody.”
At a time when Chicago’s homicide rate is rising by nearly 13 percent and children are being gunned down on city streets, Daley said the Supreme Court has “changed the rules” in a way that will make it far more difficult to protect law-abiding citizens.
“The Supreme Court and Congress have no obligation to keep our country safe. It falls on the backs of mayors and local officials. That’s who say, ‘I want my street, my parks, my school, my church, mosque and synagogues — I want everything to be safe.’…They’re changing the rules….Why should we as a city not be able to protect ourselves from those who want guns in our society?” the mayor said.
Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis today said that 75 percent of Chicago’s murders involve firearms. So far this year, Chicago Police have responded to 15,000 “man with a gun” calls and 27,000 calls of “shots fired.”
“Today’s recent decision by the Supreme Court will have to be looked at by a lot of the lawyers to see how it truly will impact upon law enforcement,” Weis said at police headquarters. “However, if the result of this ruling are that more guns come on the street, it’s going to make it more challenging for law enforcement.”
Daley noted that the U.S. Supreme Court building and Congress are in a security bubble with armed guards everywhere and metal detectors galore.
“Those who are rich and those who are in power always feel safe. Those who do not have the power do not feel safe. And that’s what they’re saying,” Daley said.
“You cannot carry a gun into a federal building. You cannot carry a gun into a federal court. So, they’re setting themselves aside. They’re saying to the rest of America that the answer to all of the constitutional issues is that we can carry guns. I just don’t understand how they came to this thinking. I’m very, very disappointed.”
Chicago’s ban on new handguns-and a companion requirement that all existing guns be re-registered every year-was pushed through the City Council in 1982 in the wake of the assassination attempts on former President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II and the death of two police officers.
The number of registered guns has steadily plummeted ever since.
Most gun owners have apparently decided that it’s too much trouble to re-register their weapons. And tens of thousands of additional weapons have been purchased or inherited since the freeze took effect and brought into Chicago illegally.
For years, aldermen have called the handgun freeze a “charade” and likened it to Prohibition.
Earlier this month, the City Council finally got around to acting on that belief.
They agreed to re-open gun registration in Chicago — but not in the narrow manner proposed by Ald. Richard Mell (33rd).
A former hunter, Mell had proposed a one-month amnesty after he forgot to re-register his arsenal of shotguns, rifles and pistols as required every year by the ordinance he helped to pass.
During the month-long window, gun owners who attempted to re-register their guns between May 1, 2007 and April 1, 2008 only to be rejected on grounds the registrations had lapsed would have been allowed to re-register without penalty.
The ordinance ultimately approved by the Council quadrupled the amnesty period. And it applied to everybody who “possesses a firearm that was at one time validly registered to that person in the city of Chicago.”

Justice Antonin Scalia: Al Gore to blame for 2000 US election mess

Ouch! That's gonna hurt the feelings of the little whiny libs who eight years later still claim Bush pulled the Oval Office seat from under Al Bore's butt, and the Supreme Court shouldn't have played the deciding role in validating the 2000 election results.

Judge Scalia hits the nail in the Dhimmicrats head:

"Richard Nixon, when he lost to [John F.] Kennedy thought that the election had been stolen in Chicago, which was very likely true with the system at the time," Justice Antonin Scalia told The Telegraph.

"But he did not even think about bringing a court challenge. That was his prerogative. So you know if you don't like it, don't blame it on me.

"I didn't bring it into the courts. Mr Gore brought it into the courts.

"So if you don't like the courts getting involved talk to Mr Gore."

ACLU Not Happy With The Supreme Court 2nd Amendment Ruling

A lot of people/groups are showing their true colors today. Take for example ACLU (American Communist-Liberal Union), an organization established as a front for the USSR's International Communist Party in the USA.
Here is a quote from their press release regarding yesterday's SCOTUS decision affirming the 2nd Amendment as an individual right:

"The Right To Bear Arms"

The Second Amendment has not been the subject of much Supreme Court discussion through the years. To the extent it has been discussed, the Court has described the Second Amendment as designed to protect the ability of the states to preserve their own sovereignty against a new and potentially overreaching national government. Based on that understanding, the Court has historically construed the Second Amendment as a collective right connected to the concept of a "well-regulated militia" rather than an individual right to possess guns for private purposes.

In Heller, the Court reinterpreted the Second Amendment as a source of individual rights. Washington D.C.'s gun control law, which bans the private possession of handguns and was widely considered the most restrictive such law in the country, became a victim of that reinterpretation.

The Court was careful to note that the right to bear arms is not absolute and can be subject to reasonable regulation. Yet, by concluding that D.C.'s gun control law was unreasonable and thus invalid, the Court placed a constitutional limit on gun control legislation that had not existed prior to its decision in Heller. It is too early to know how much of a constitutional straitjacket the new rule will create.'

And check out the next issue they comment on:

Voting Rights

"The Court's willingness to recognize a new right to bear arms was not matched by a willingness to enforce the fundamental right to vote...

"Reinterpret"!?!? "New right"?!!? Excuse me, I believe SCOTUS clarified/affirmed that right.

Why ACLU would support the SCOTUS decision when their marxist ideology requires that the government can wield power over its people without having to worry about an armed revolt?
No really, why would ACLU comrades shoot themselves in the foot?

But let's take a closer look at ACLU's origins: the founder and guiding light of the ACLU for over 30 years is a Soviet plant named Roger Baldwin. Comrade Balwin has a record of over 100 communist-front affiliations and citations (documented in detail, CONGRESSIONAL RECORD May 26, 1952). In an article written for Soviet Russia Today (September 1934), Roger Baldwin said: "When the power of the working class is once achieved, as it has been only in the Soviet Union, I am for maintaining it by any means whatsoever." "The class struggle is the central conflict of the world, all others are coincidental.". (He said he did not care who died for his cause)

"Communism is my goal"

Entry of Roger Baldwin in the Harvard reunion book on the occasion of the 30th anniversary reunion of his class of 1905 (1935):

"I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and sole control of those who produced the wealth: communism is the goal." (he said the final goal of the ACLU is to take individual freedoms from the people.)

Dhimmicrats Attack Supreme Court 2nd Amendment Decision

Anyone still questions why Hussein Obambi and his ilk must never be trusted by the American people with the power to appoint SCOTUS judges?

Quote:
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
'I am profoundly disappointed in Justice Roberts and Justice Alito, both of whom assured us of their respect for precedent. With this decision, 70 years of precedent has gone out the window. And I believe the people of this great country will be less safe because of it.' —

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.
'Today, President Bush's radical Supreme Court justices put rigid ideology ahead of the safety of communities in New Jersey and across the country. This decision illustrates why I have strongly opposed extremist judicial nominees and will continue to do so in the future.'

Well, Diane Feinstein had one of the three CCW (exactlly, only 3 Concealed Weapon Permits) that had been issued in the Bay area of Kalifornia. Wanna talk about Dhimmicrat elitism, Dianne?

Keep The Ball Rolling: Chicago Democrat Gun-Grabbers Sued For Gun Ban

SAF Files Lawsuit Challenging Chicago’s Handgun Ban

BELLEVUE, WA – Following Thursday’s (5-4) ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment protects an individual civil right to keep and bear arms, and that a municipal gun ban violates that right, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) filed a federal lawsuit (complaint) challenging the City of Chicago’s long-standing handgun ban.

“Chicago’s handgun ban has failed to stop violent crime,” SAF founder Alan Gottlieb stated. “It’s time to give the Constitution a chance.”

In addition to SAF and ISRA, plaintiffs include Chicago residents Otis McDonald, a retiree who has been working with police to rid his neighborhood of drug dealers, and who wants to have a handgun at his home; Adam Orlov, a former Evanston police officer; software engineer David Lawson and his wife, Colleen, a hypnotherapist, whose home has been targeted by burglars. Attorney Alan Gura, who argued the District of Columbia challenge before the high court, and Chicago area attorney David G. Sigale, represent the plaintiffs.

“Our goal,” Gura said “is to require state and local officials to respect our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Chicago’s handgun ban, and some of its gun registration requirements, are clearly unconstitutional.”

“The right to defend our homes and families against those who would do them harm, whether a random criminal, violent ex-domestic partner, or other wrongdoer, is one of the principles upon which America was founded,” Sigale said. “It is time the City of Chicago trust its honest, law-abiding residents with this Constitutional right.”

“The city has been denying gun owners their civil rights for a long time and I think this lawsuit could have a profound effect on their registration law,” ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson added.

Under the gun law currently in place, firearms must be re-registered annually.

“Each time,” Gura said, “a tax is imposed, forms must be filled out, photographs submitted. A person who owns more than one gun will find herself or himself constantly in the process of registering each gun as it comes due for expiration. If registration is to be required, once is enough.”

He further noted that Chicago’s bizarre requirement that guns be registered before they are acquired often times makes registration impossible. The penalty for failure to comply with the registration scheme is that a gun not re-registered on time can never be registered again. Gura likened it to a requirement to dispose of a car if it is not re-registered on time with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, the Foundation has grown to more than 600,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control.

Supreme Court Strikes Down D.C. Gun Ban, Upholds Individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Thursday , June 26, 2008

WASHINGTON —
The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

The court had not conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since its ratification in 1791. The amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Click here to read the full opinion on the Supreme Court Web Site.

The basic issue for the justices was whether the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.

Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said that an individual right to bear arms is supported by "the historical narrative" both before and after the Second Amendment was adopted.

The Constitution does not permit "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home," Scalia said. The court also struck down Washington's requirement that firearms be equipped with trigger locks or kept disassembled, but left intact the licensing of guns.

In a dissent he summarized from the bench, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote that the majority "would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons."

He said such evidence "is nowhere to be found."

Justice Stephen Breyer wrote a separate dissent in which he said, "In my view, there simply is no untouchable constitutional right guaranteed by the Second Amendment to keep loaded handguns in the house in crime-ridden urban areas."

Joining Scalia were Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas. The other dissenters were Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter.

Gun rights supporters hailed the decision. "I consider this the opening salvo in a step-by-step process of providing relief for law-abiding Americans everywhere that have been deprived of this freedom," said Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association.

The NRA will file lawsuits in San Francisco, Chicago and several of its suburbs challenging handgun restrictions there based on Thursday's outcome.

The capital's gun law was among the nation's strictest.

Dick Anthony Heller, 66, an armed security guard, sued the District after it rejected his application to keep a handgun at his home for protection in the same Capitol Hill neighborhood as the court.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in Heller's favor and struck down Washington's handgun ban, saying the Constitution guarantees Americans the right to own guns and that a total prohibition on handguns is not compatible with that right.

The issue caused a split within the Bush administration. Vice President Dick Cheney supported the appeals court ruling, but others in the administration feared it could lead to the undoing of other gun regulations, including a federal law restricting sales of machine guns. Other laws keep felons from buying guns and provide for an instant background check.

Scalia said nothing in Thursday's ruling should "cast doubt on long-standing prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons or the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings."

In a concluding paragraph to the his 64-page opinion, Scalia said the justices in the majority "are aware of the problem of handgun violence in this country" and believe the Constitution "leaves the District of Columbia a variety of tools for combating that problem, including some measures regulating handguns."

The law adopted by Washington's city council in 1976 bars residents from owning handguns unless they had one before the law took effect. Shotguns and rifles may be kept in homes, if they are registered, kept unloaded and either disassembled or equipped with trigger locks.

Opponents of the law have said it prevents residents from defending themselves. The Washington government says no one would be prosecuted for a gun law violation in cases of self-defense.

Obama's bump is actually a pimple?

Gallup Daily: Obama, McCain Tied at 45%

PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update on the presidential election finds John McCain and Barack Obama exactly tied at 45% among registered voters nationwide.

Voter preferences had been fairly evenly divided for the past week, with Obama generally holding a slight advantage of two or three percentage points. This is the first time since Gallup's May 31-June 4 rolling average that Obama does not have at least a slim advantage over McCain. Obama's largest lead to date has been seven points. (To view the complete trend since March 7, 2008, click here.)
Since the changes from Tuesday's results are well within the margin of sampling error, it is unclear at this point if today's results represent a further tightening of the race. The last two individual nights of polling have, however, been more favorable to McCain that what Gallup has shown for most of June. -- Jeff Jones

"Thought Showers"???

Flush. Whoosh. Down the drain, they go.

UK: A council has banned the term "brainstorming" and replaced it with "thought showers".

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council in Kent was accused of taking political correctness to extremes after instructing staff to make the change.

The move came as council chiefs feared the word brainstorming might offend mentally ill people and those with epilepsy.

The buzz term is often used by executives to generate ideas among their staff.

But memos have been sent to staff asking them not to use it and some have been given training which encouraged them to use the alternative of thought showers.

Even charities representing epileptics said the ban was taking political correctness too far.

Margaret Thomas, of the National Society for Epilepsy, said: "Brainstorming is a clear and descriptive phrase.

"Alternatives such as thought shower or blue-sky thinking are ambiguous to say the least.

"Any implication that the word brainstorming is offensive to epileptics takes political correctness too far."

Richard Colwill, of mental health charity SANE, said: "This ban goes too far. Few would be genuinely offended by the word brainstorming in the context of council meetings."

A spokesman for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council in Kent said: "We take diversity awareness very seriously.

"The majority of staff have taken part in training and been asked to use the term thought showers."

Story from Telegraph News

Sad to watch the demise of one of the greatest cultures of all time.

Lech Walesa was a Communist spy, says new book. I say: what a crock of crap!

Two writers claim that Mr Walesa — the founder of the Solidarity movement, Nobel Peace prizewinner, former President of Poland - was a stooge of the communist secret police.

In The State Security Service and Lech Walesa, Slawomir Cenckiewicz and Piotr Gontarczyk make two central claims. The first is that Mr Walesa was an informer for the secret police between 1970 and 1976 under the codename “Bolek”. The second is that as President from 1990 to 1995 he borrowed his police file from the Interior Ministry archives and returned it with key pages missing.

Total bull, demonstrating once again how unscrupulous people would invent a totally ridiculous conspiracy theory and smear anybody in order to sell a book, make a movie, have their 15 minutes of fame and of course make huge amounts of cash out of the stupidity of the people who believe them.

"9/11 was an inside job" rings a bell?
Dylan Avery -the guy with a big mouth and a vivid imagination who wrote and made "Loose Change" in his mom's basement is ridiculously rich today because millions of liberal sheeple were ready to believe that Islamic terrorists are just innocent victims of a grandiose scheme concocted by an the President George Bush. Of course they see no contradiction in the fact that Bush cannot be both in the same time: an evil genius capable of fooling an entire nation and the biggest moron in America.

Same with the so called "writers" who made a communist spy out of the man who dealt the first blow to the communist block. It is remarkable how they do not see any contradiction between what Lech Walesa did in the 70's and 80's and the historical consequences of his actions (starting the end of communism in Europe), and what they claim he did (he was a communist stooge working for the S.B -the Polish secret police)

US Army Sending Eight Soldiers To Beijing In Special Mission Involving A Lot Of Shooting

...a lot of shooting for Olympic Gold, that is.

Eight Soldiers Beijing-Bound For Olympics

When Libby Callahan was 23 years old, she joined the Washington, D.C., police force and, like all recruits, was taught to fire a gun. She took those skills to the Army Reserve a decade later, at age 33. Now 56, Sergeant Callahan is among eight American soldiers who will head to Beijing to compete for gold medals in the Olympics.

The Army Olympians are in the city today for an "Army Strong vs. New York Strong" competition, during which they will host a "friendly fitness challenge" in front of the Times Square Recruiting Station. They will challenge passersby and tourists to compete with them in racewalking, push-up, and jump-rope challenges "to showcase the motivation and endurance embodied in every U.S. Army Soldier," according to a press release.

The U.S. Army has a history of cultivating the athletes in its ranks — many of whom specialize in shooting events and are hired to train soldiers for combat, but also spend much of their time training for national and international competitions.

Some are recruited specifically for these positions, and join the Army half as professional athletes and half as experienced advisers. Others are discovered among the organization's ranks and are pulled out of deployments to compete.

Sergeant Christopher Downs falls in the second category. He joined the Army in 1997 after high school to escape the drudgery of his post office job, looking to find adventure in the military.

In July 2004, a new battalion commander decided that one of the Army's frequent intercompany competitions — known as "smokers" — would include boxing. He nominated Mr. Downs for the sport.

"I was kind of pushed into boxing," Mr. Downs said in an interview yesterday. "I was the heckler, I talked a lot of crap, so he said why don't you get in there and sign yourself up."

After winning the bronze medal in boxing in the 2005 World Military Championship, he was deployed to Tikrit, Iraq, where he escorted convoys, cleared routes, and carried out routine patrols. In the 13 months he was there, his section saw 13 IEDs and most of his platoon members received Purple Heart medals.

While there, he received a call and was told that the Army wanted him to join its World Class Athlete Program and train for competitions. He has since left Iraq to spend all of his time training — between six and 10 hours a day, six days a week.

Because the American boxing team did not qualify in Mr. Downs's weight class, he will travel to Beijing as a supporter of the team. When he returns, it is possible he will be sent back to Iraq.

While Army Olympians range from wrestlers to runners to boxers, most are shooters, and with good reason.

"The Army kind of dominates the shooting sports," a three-time Olympian in the prone rifle event, Major Michael Anti, 42, said.

In the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Mr. Anti won a silver medal in his sport, which involves taking 60 shots with a .22-caliber rifle while lying facedown on the ground. To celebrate, he bought a silver Corvette, which he plans to upgrade to a copper-colored model if he wins the gold.

Like Mr. Anti, Sergeant Jason Parker, 33, has been shooting ever since he was a child — his parents would take him hunting when he was 3 years old. He was recruited by the Army after high school specifically for his rifle skills.

He competes in the air rifle and three-position rifle events and has been to the Olympics three times before. He said he joined the Army in hopes it would take him to the Olympics. "They had all the resources that anyone would need to succeed at Olympic shooting," he said.

Ms. Callahan said she joined the Army Reserve not to improve her shooting, but because she had always been fascinated by it. By the 1980s, she was competing in international shooting competitions.

"I was very good at it," she said. "There's just a competitive edge in me and it got me hooked and I said, 'This is what I want to do.'"

Ms. Callahan is a rarity not only because she's a woman in a profession and sport dominated by men, but also because at 56 she will be the oldest female American Olympian ever, and she could become the oldest female Olympic medalist.

Although they think of themselves as soldiers first, being Army athletes has allowed Ms. Callahan and others to travel widely. They routinely compete against shooters from international armies, including some America considers enemies.

In Beijing, they will compete with North Korean marksmen. Recently, they say they've seen the number of Middle Eastern competitors grow. Ms. Callahan has competed alongside women from Kuwait and Oman who wear a hijab while they shoot.

Politics don't interfere with the competition, Ms. Callahan said. "To me, the Olympics and the military have almost the same ideals," she said.

Obama Apology to Muslim Women Orchestrated by Muslim U.S. House Rep.
by FOXNews.com
Tuesday, June 24, 2008

An apology issued by Barack Obama to two Muslim women booted from the front lines of a public appearance by the Democratic presidential candidate last week was orchestrated by Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim ever elected to Congress.

Multiple congressional sources confirm that it was Ellison, D-Minn., who confronted Obama over the issue during a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus.

Obama called the women to apologize after two volunteers with the campaign removed the women from the stage area behind the location where Obama would be speaking. The volunteers allegedly told the women it was because they were wearing traditional Muslim scarves.

Colt M4 Carbine's Future Uncertain: Dark Clouds Forming

From Defense Review:

"Perhaps the single most exciting thing that happened at NDIA International Infantry & Joint Services Small Arms Systems Symposium 2008--away from the firing range, of course--was a confrontation between Jim Battaglini (Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. James R. Battaglini) of Colt Defense and U.S. Air Force Col. Robert Mattes, the director of the Comparative Test Office for the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Advanced Systems and Concepts, while Col. Mattes was giving a speech and promoting the idea of an open competition to determine the best infantry/assault carbine that can be supplied to U.S. military infantry warfighters.
Specifically, the purpose of the competition would be to determine whether or not the Colt M4 Carbine is still the best carbine solution for our warfighters, and if there might be a better (i.e. more reliable and combat-effective) carbine out there M4.
----------------------------------
If the M4 is really the best assault/infantry carbine out there, it should be able to beat all comers, and Colt Defense shouldn't have anything to worry about. Our warfighters deserve the best weapon available, so may the best weapon win. That said, we believe that any/all testing/competing should be done in conditions that are as combat-relevant and combat-realistic as possible. Part of the testing should definitely be operational testing (OT) by infantry warfighters, including U.S. Army general infantry, Rangers, and Marines--but not necessarily limited to those three groups."

If Scalia Is Writing Heller Vs DC Opinion Is It An Awesome Sign?

"It does look exceptionally likely that Justice Scalia (the most pro-2nd Amendment of the Supremes) is writing the principal opinion for the Court in Heller – the D.C. guns case.
That is the only opinion remaining from the sitting and he is the only member of the Court not to have written a majority opinion from the sitting. There is no indication that he lost a majority from March. His only dissent from the sitting is for two Justices in Indiana v. Edwards. So, that’s a good sign for advocates of a strong individual rights conception of the Second Amendment and a bad sign for D.C."

Czech Republic is the only country which accepts the Irish no vote

Of all 27 EU member states, the Czech Republic is the only country which appears ready to accept the Irish no vote.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus called the vote a "victory of freedom and reason"
and said "ratification cannot continue", and Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek has said, "The Irish 'No' is not of a lesser impact for us than the French and Dutch 'No'."
Despite pressure from all the other EU leaders at the summit in Brussels last week, Mr. Topolanek objected to a declaration calling for rapid ratifications in the seven other countries - including his own - that are yet to agree the Treaty.

The Czech Senate has stalled ratification to await a constitutional court ruling on the Lisbon Treaty and Mr. Topolanek said: "If the vote was today, I would not bet 100 crowns [about £3] on a yes vote."

Please write to Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, offering him your support and letting him know he is not alone, despite the immense pressure he is under from other EU leaders to continue to ratify the Treaty regardless of the Irish no vote.
You can contact him here: topolanek.mirek@vlada.cz

Well done Czech Republic, a nation that thinks things through!

The UK has gone off the deep end: can't wear a hat or whistle

Hats banned from Yorkshire pubs over surveillance camera fears

Pubs in Yorkshire have been ordered to ban people from wearing flat caps or other hats so troublemakers can be more easily recognised.

The Park Hotel in Wadsley, Sheffield, is the latest to be asked to impose the rule by senior police officers.

Mark Kelly, the landlord said: "Police asked us to ensure that everyone removes headgear.

"With pensioners, by the time they sit down their hats always come off anyway because they were brought up with manners so usually take their hats off indoors."
-----------------------
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said bans on people wearing headgear in public premises had been operated in banks and post offices for years.

Another jaw dropping piece from the United Sheepland :

College girls banned from whistling at builders

A further education college is having to protect builders from wolf-whistling girls, in a reversal of traditional gender stereotypes.

Officials at West Kent College in Tonbridge, Kent, sent an email to all pupils warning that the behaviour was "totally unacceptable", and saying any students caught harassing contractors would face disciplinary action.

The email was sent after a demolition team started work on a £94 million, three-year building project at the campus.

The email read: "It has come to the attention of the college that some female students have been making comments to, or whistling at, the builders both whilst on site and as they walk around the campus.

"Although we are sure no offence is meant, this constitutes harassment and is wholly unacceptable.

"We have asked the contractors' representative to pass on all instances of harassment to the college and we will take appropriate action which may include disciplinary action."
-------------------------
Meanwhile new laws could see wolf-whistling builders placed on the sex offenders register. The Sexual Offences (Scotland) Bill will create a new offence of "communicating indecently", punishable by up to 10 years in jail.

Obama's 57 States Comment-REVISITED

Via email:

Barack Obama says he's gonna go out and campaign in 57 states, he was just tired, you know, it's been such a long campaign, he's been so many places, he probably thinks there are 57 states. There is a website called the International Humanist and Ethical Union and here is how the second paragraph of an article on that website begins: 'Every year from 1999 to 2005 the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) representing the 57 Islamic states presented a resolution to the United Nations commission on human rights called combating.' And the title of the piece here is, 'How the Islamic states dominate the UN human rights council,' and there are 57 of them.

Obama said he's going to campaign in 57 states, and it turns out that there are 57 Islamic states. There are 57 Islamic states. So did Obama just lose his bearings, or was this a more telling slip, folks?

The author (whoever he may be) has a point. A very good one.

A Second Amendment Freedom Rally in CHICAGO? Damn right!

Double click on the picture to enlarge

Socialist Chicago is one of the most heavily regulated and restrictive American cities when it comes to the Second Amendment rights, having imposed a total gun ban on handguns since 1982.

Is the gun ban working?
Absolutely. The criminals are feeling safer than ever knowing their victims are disarmed; violent crimes like rape, house break-ins when the owners are at home, armed robberies and murders execution-style have skyrocketed since the gun ban was passed by Barak Obama's political mentors.

In the five years after the ban took effect in 1976, the murder rate rose to 35 per 100,000 people from 27. In fact, in the three decades since the ban took effect, the annual murder rate has only once fallen below what it was in 1976. In 2002 the murder rate hit 46 per 100,000 people.

Here are more numbers:

Murder: 2.7 times national average
598
Forcible Rape: data not available
0
Robbery: 2.73 times national average 17,302
Aggravated Assault: 1.88 times national average 19,784
Burglary: 1.1 times national average 25,064
Larceny or Theft: 1.13 times national average 96,779
Car Theft: 1.31 times national average 22,779
All Violent Crime: 2.18 times national average 37.684
Data Source:
2003 FBI Report of Offenses Known to Law Enforcement

So if you live anywhere near Chicago or in the belly of the Marxist Metropolis itself, I recommend you to move your arse on July 11th and join the rally - even if you are not a gun owner.
It's not only about the right to keep and bear arms, it is also about the rest of the civil liberties they are trying to take from you. And it is also about letting the Democreeps who run this once great city that Americans have had enough of their failed promises "you give up your liberties and we'll keep you safe".

I deeply love Chicago. It is the city where I first set foot in America and I will never forget the profound impression of amazement and magic I had when I got out from the train that carried me from O'Hare airport to Downtown. To me, Chicago is more America than any other American city will ever be.
Please don't let the elitist socialist bastards who run it to turn Chicago in another Detroit.

Tyrants Back Obama

From the Conservative Voice

The former president of communist Cuba, Fidel Castro, is supporting Barack Obama in the race for the White House. Castro, who stepped down in February because of continuing poor health, said the Democratic Senator was the most 'advanced' candidate running for the U.S. presidency.

Another champion of socialism endorsed Barack Obama. Barack Obama's people are saying that it matters not who endorses him. What matters is who he endorses. Well, that is not quite true. People will endorse those that they admire for their stand. This shows these people agree with Barack Obama's political stand. That means that Barack Obama's political goals parallel the views of such as Castro, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Ben Laden, and other totalitarian monsters. This gives us all an idea of what Barack Obama has in mind for the United States. Scary, isn't it?

A scene at City Hall in San Francisco

By an unknown author, received this morning by email:

( A scene at City Hall in San Francisco )

'Next.'

'Good morning. We want to apply for a marriage license.'

'Names?'

'Tim and Jim Jones.'

'Jones? Are you related? I see a resemblance.'

'Yes, we're brothers.'

'Brothers? You can't get married.'

'Why not? Aren't you giving marriage licenses to same gender couples?'

'Yes, thousands. But we haven't had any siblings. That's incest!'

'Incest?' No, we are not gay.'

'Not gay? Then why do you want to get married?'

'For the financial benefits, of course. And we do love each other.
Besides, we don't have any other prospects.'

'But we're issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples who've been
denied equal protection under the law. If you are not gay, you can get
married to a woman.'

'Wait a minute. A gay man has the same right to marry a woman as I have.
But just because I'm straight doesn't mean I want to marry a woman. I want
to marry Jim.'

'And I want to marry Tim, Are you going to discriminate against us just
because we are not gay?'

'All right, all right. I'll give you your license. Next.'

'Hi. We are here to get married.'

'Names?'

'John Smith, Jane James, Robert Green, and June Johnson.'

'Who wants to marry whom?'

'We all want to marry each other.'

'But there are four of you!'

'That's right. You see, we're all bisexual. I love Jane and Robert, Jane
loves me and June, June loves Robert and Jane, and Robert loves June and
me. All of us getting married together is the only way that we can express
our sexual preferences in a marital relationship.'

'But we've only been granting licenses to gay and lesbian couples.'

'So you're discriminating against bisexuals!'

'No, it's just that, well, the traditional idea of marriage is that it's
just for couples.'

'Since when are you standing on tradition?'

'Well, I mean, you have to draw the line somewhere.'

'Who says? There's no logical reason to limit marriage to couples. The more
the better. Besides, we demand our rights! The mayor says the constitution
guarantees equal protection under the law. Give us a marriage license!'

'All right, all right. Next.'

'Hello, I'd like a marriage license.'

'In what names?'

'David Deets.'

'And the other man?'

'That's all. I want to marry myself.'

'Marry yourself? What do you mean?'

'Well, my psychiatrist says I have a dual personality, so I want to marry
the two together. Maybe I can file a joint income-tax return.'

'That does it! I quit!! You people are making a mockery of marriage!!'

Democrats: Restoring The Trust Of The People.

To be more precise, the entire 12% of the People.

Confidence in Congress at record low

Only 12 percent of Americans now have confidence in Congress, the lowest percentage in the 35 years that the Gallup Poll has tracked the number.

Americans now view Congress less favorably any of the 14 other American institutions tracked by Gallup, including big business, newspapers and health maintenance organizations.

Even as President Bush’s approval rating languishes at a record low, more than twice as many Americans have confidence in the presidency — 26 percent — than have confidence in Congress.

The Democrats have controlled both houses of the Congress since January 2007.

Intelligence Officials: Dozens of (white) Europeans Have Trained in Terror Camps in Pakistan

Officials Fear This May be the Beginnings of a New Breed of al-Qaeda-Affiliated Terrorism

Dozens of white Europeans have trained in terrorist camps in Pakistan's tribal regions in recent months, U.S. intelligence sources tell ABC News, in what officials fear may be the beginnings of a new breed of al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorism.

Government officials suspect the terrorists, recruited in Europe, have been dispatched to plan attacks against Europe and possibly the United States. The alleged terrorists hail from Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Romania and Estonia, sources said.

There is growing evidence that some European recruits may have already gone operational. Two of the suspects arrested in a September 2007 plot to kill American soldiers in Germany were native Germans, and U.S. officials say they are investigating whether they were trained in Pakistan.

An April 2008 report from Europol also noted that an increasing number of European nationals attended training in Pakistan "and were later involved in, or suspected of, terrorist offences in the EU."

ABC News

I don't know what's gonna happen to a Dutch, Dane or German terrorist if they're gonna get caught and sent back to be tried to their countries of origin.
But one thing I know for sure: if a Romanian national is gonna be caught and sent back to Romania for trial, he's not gonna have an ACLU lawyer coaching him what to lie or a Human Rights commission investigating the possible toilet-dunk desecration of his Qu'ran.

On the contrary, it is quite possible after arriving in a Romanian prison the individual is gonna be wishing for his own quick death; but his wish won't be granted a single day too soon and in any other way than in a very slow and very, very humiliating and painful manner.
Which is actually the way all countries should treat this kind of Islamofascist scum: Vlad Dracula style.

Anyone want some tea? I hear there is going to be a tea party soon...

Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2008 (Introduced in House by the Democrats)

Among the evil "assault weapons" they are trying to blacklist this time:

Browning BAR Mark II Safari Semi-Auto Rifle and Remington 7400 - purely hunting purpose guns

All-American legends: lever-action Western-style hunting rifles like Browning 1886, 81 BLR, Winchester 1894, Henry, Marlin, Rossi :

Pretty much all the bolt-action hunting or target shooting rifles like Remington 700, Howa 1500, Ruger M77, Sako, Winchester, Savage...the list is just too long to fit on a single blog page.

Single-Shot centerfire copies of 1800's antique blackpowder rifles like Shiloh-Sharps and Navy Arms

Safari hunting double barrel rifles like Merkel or Beretta Model 455 SxS

Pretty much all .22 cal, empty can-popping rimfire rifles that you can imagine (everything from the Henry lever gun and ending with Olympic target and competition models, bolt action and semiauto -the list is just too long to post)

Shotguns: they want to ban all of them. Hunting, clay shooting, home defense. Semiauto, double barrel, pumps, single shot, you name it.

Is it clear now what the liberal Democreeps want it is not "sensible gun laws", but British-style total gun confiscation and population control?

Obama: Didn’t Realize What He Was Saying?

From Commentary Magazine

An advisor, Daniel Kurtzer, to Barack Obama says that Obama didn’t realize what he was saying to AIPAC when he used the term ”undivided” in reference to Jerusalem. According to Kurtzer, Obama had “a picture in his mind of Jerusalem before 1967 with barbed wires and minefields and demilitarized zones.” Kurtzer says that only after the speech did Obama realize it was a “code word” to use the phrase, “but it does not indicate any kind of naiveté about foreign affairs.”

Not understanding that a key term is a code word, not having a current picture of Jerusalem, and not anticipating the implications of having to reverse field within 24 hours sure sounds naive. Even more so, if the advisor says Obama didn’t understand what he was saying. But wait a minute. Didn’t Obama have advisors on Israel assisting him with the speech? Where were they? Once again, this suggests that there is too little adult supervision of a candidate unaccustomed to speaking on the world stage about issues in which there are lots of code words, indeed in which every word (e.g. “preconditions,” “immediate withdrawal”) has meaning to Americans’ foes and friends

Top 10 reasons to blame Democrats for soaring gasoline prices

From American Thinker

This started out as an attempt to create a light and humorous, Letterman-esque Top 10 list. But the items on the list, and the drain Americans are seeing in their pocketbooks because of Democrats' actions (sometimes inaction) are just too tragic for that.

10) ANWR If Bill Clinton had signed into law the Republican Congress's 1995 bill to allow drilling of ANWR instead of vetoing it, ANWR could be producing a million barrels of (non-Opec) oil a day--5% of the nation's consumption. Although speaking in another context, even Democrat Senator Charles Schumer, no proponent of ANWR drilling, admits that "one million barrels per day," would cause the price of gasoline to fall "50 cents a gallon almost immediately," according to a recent George Will column.

9) Coastal Drilling (i.e., not in my backyard) Democrats have consistently fought efforts to drill off the U.S. coast, as evidenced by Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's preotestation against a failed 2005 bill: "Not only does this legislation dismantle the bi-partisan ban on offshore drilling, but it provides a financial incentive for states to do so."
A financial incentive? With the Chinese now slant drilling for oil just 50 miles off the Florida coast, wouldn't that have been a good thing?

8) Insistence on alternative fuels One of the first acts of the new Democrat-controlled congress in 2007 was an energy bill that "calls for a huge increase in the use of ethanol as a motor fuel and requires new appliance efficiency standards." By focusing on alternative fuels such as ethanol, and not more drilling, Democrats have added to the cost of food, worsening starvation problems around the word and increasing inflationary pressures in the U.S., including prices at the pump.

7) Nuclear power Even the French, who sometimes seem to lack the backbone to stand up for anything other than soft cheese, faced down their environmentalists over the need for nuclear power. France now generates 79% of its electricity from nuclear plants, mitigating the need for imported oil. The French have so much cheap energy that France has become the world's largest exporter of electric power. They have plans in place to build more reactors, including an experimental fusion reactor.

The last nuclear reactor built in the United States, according to the US Dept of Energy, was the "River Bend" plant in Louisiana. Its construction began in March of 1977.

Islamic Saudi Academy Prepares 'Clean' Books for Fall

(CNSNews.com) - Religious textbooks at the Islamic Saudi Academy (ISA) in Fairfax, Va., which have sparked controversy for content that allegedly promotes violence and hatred toward non-Muslims, will be rewritten and reissued by the time students return to school in the fall, said school officials.

"We hope the books will be clean from any kind of misunderstanding that people think about," the head of Islamic teachings at the academy, who asked not to be named, told Cybercast News Service on Tuesday.

The ISA official, however, denied that the books used until now contain lessons that teach children to hate non-Muslims or incite violence against people outside the faith.

"There is nothing in these books -- but people that don't have this background, they may understand it in a wrong way, in a negative way," the official said.

Poor little misunderstood muslims...there is nothing wrong with those books; it is us the malevolent dirty infidels - sons of apes and pigs who are misinterpreting the peacegul teaching of the Qu'ran inspired school books you are using.

Take for example this Qu'ran verse:
"You (i.e. Muslims) will fight with the Jews till some of them will hide behind stones. The stones will (betray them) saying, 'O 'Abdullah (i.e. slave of Allah)! There is a Jew hiding behind me; so kill him.'"

Sounds like a call for genocide, right?
Wrong! This is just another misinterpretation of the Qu'ran. What the Holy Book really teaches is whenever a muslim sees a Jew on the street, he must run towards him and invite the poor misguided infidel to the nearest restaurant and buy him a shish kabob with hummus and a cold keffir.

See? It is so easy to misinterpret the peaceful teachings of Islam when you "don't have the right background"

Jews For Preservation Of Firearms Ownership: The Battle of Athens, Tennessee

A history lesson to be learned from JFPFO:

The Battle of Athens, Tennessee

As Recently As 1946, American Citizens Were Forced To Take Up Arms As A Last Resort Against Corrupt Government Officials.

On August 1-2, 1946, some Americans, brutalized by their county government, used armed force as a last resort to overturn it. These Americans wanted honest open elections. For years they had asked for state or federal election monitors to prevent vote fraud (forged ballots, secret ballot counts and intimidation by armed sheriff's deputies) by the local political boss. They got no help.

These Americans' absolute refusal to knuckle under had been hardened by service in World War II. Having fought to free other countries from murderous regimes, they rejected vicious abuse by their county government.

These Americans had a choice. Their state's Constitution -- Article 1, Section 26 -- recorded their right to keep and bear arms for the common defense. Few "gun control" laws had been enacted.

These Americans were residents of McMinn County, which is located between Chattanooga and Knoxville in Eastern Tennessee. The two main towns were Athens and Etowah. McMinn County residents had long been independent political thinkers. For a long time they also had: accepted bribe-taking by politicians and/or the sheriff to overlook illicit whiskey-making and gambling; financed the sheriff's department from fines-usually for speeding or public drunkenness which promoted false arrests; and put up with voting fraud by both Democrats and Republicans.

The wealthy Cantrell family, of Etowah, backed Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1932 election, hoping New Deal programs would revive the local economy and help Democrats to replace Republicans in the county government. So it proved.

Paul Cantrell was elected sheriff in the 1936,1938 and 1940 elections, but by slim margins. The sheriff was the key county official. Cantrell was elected to the state senate in 1942 and 1944; his chief deputy, Pat Mansfield, was elected sheriff. In 1946 Paul Cantrell again sought the sheriff's office.

At the end of 1945, some 3,000 battle-hardened veterans returned to McMinn County; the GIs held Cantrell politically responsible for Mansfield's doings. Early in 1946, some newly returned ex-GIs decided to challenge Cantrell politically by offering an all-ex-GI, non-partisan ticket. They promised a fraud-free election, stating in ads and speeches that there would be an honest ballot count and reform of county government.

At a rally, a GI speaker said, "The principles that we fought for in this past war do not exist in McMinn County. We fought for democracy because we believe in democracy but not the form we live under in this county" (Daily Post-Athenian, 17 June 1946, p.1 ). At the end of July 1946, 159 McMinn County GIs petitioned the FBI to send election monitors. There was no response. The Department of Justice had not responded to McMinn County residents' complaints of election fraud in 1940, 1942 and 1944.

FROM BALLOTS TO BULLETS

The primary election was held on August 1. To intimidate voters, Mansfield brought in some 200 armed "deputies." GI poll-watchers were beaten almost at once. At about 3 p.m., Tom Gillespie, an African- American voter was told by a sheriff's deputy that he could not vote. Despite being beaten, Gillespie persisted. The enraged deputy shot him. The gunshot drew a crowd. Rumors spread that Gillespie had been shot in the back; he later recovered (C. Stephen Byrum, The Battle of Athens, Paidia Productions, Chattanooga, TN, 1987; pp. 155-57).

Other deputies detained ex-GI poll-watchers in a polling place, as that made the ballot counting "Public" A crowd gathered. Sheriff Mansfield told his deputies to disperse the crowd. When the two ex-GIs smashed a big window and escaped, the crowd surged forward. The deputies, with guns drawn, formed a tight half-circle around the front of the polling place. One deputy, "his gun raised high...shouted: 'If you sons of bitches cross this street I'll kill you!'" (Byrum, p.165).

Mansfield took the ballot boxes to the jail for counting. The deputies seemed to fear immediate attack by the "people who had just liberated Europe and the South Pacific from two of the most powerful war machines in human history" (Byrum, pp. 168-69).

Short of firearms and ammunition, the GIs scoured the county to find them. By borrowing keys to the National Guard and State Guard armories, they got three M-1 rifles, five .45 semi-automatic pistols and 24 British Enfield rifles. The armories were nearly empty after the war's end. By 8 p.m. a group of GIs and "local boys" headed for the jail but left the back door unguarded to give the jail's defenders an easy way out.

Three GIs alerting passersby to danger were fired on from the jail. Two GIs were wounded. Other GIs returned fire.

Firing subsided after 30 minutes; ammunition ran low and night had fallen. Thick brick walls shielded those inside the jail. Absent radios, the GIs' rifle fire was uncoordinated. "From the hillside fire rose and fell in disorganized cascades. More than anything else, people were simply shooting at the jail" (Byrum, p.189).

Several who ventured into the street in front of the jail were wounded. One man inside the jail was badly hurt; he recovered. Most sheriff's deputies wanted to hunker down and await rescue. Governor McCord mobilized the State Guard, perhaps to scare the GIs into withdrawing. The State Guard never went to Athens. McCord may have feared that Guard units filled with ex-GIs might not fire on other ex-GIs.

At about 2 a.m. on August 2, the GIs forced the issue. Men from Meigs County threw dynamite sticks and damaged the jail's porch. The panicked deputies surrendered. GIs quickly secured the building. Paul Cantrell faded into the night, having almost been shot by a GI who knew him, but whose .45 pistol had jammed. Mansfield's deputies were kept overnight in jail for their own safety. Calm soon returned. The GIs posted guards. The rifles borrowed from the armory were cleaned and returned before sunup.

THE AFTERMATH: RESTORING DEMOCRACY

In five precincts free of vote fraud, the GI candidate for sheriff, Knox Henry, won 1,168 votes to Cantrell's 789. Other GI candidates won by similar margins.

The GI's did not hate Cantrell. They only wanted honest government. On August 2, a town meeting set up a three-man governing committee. The regular police having fled, six men were chosen to police Etowah. In addition, "Individual citizens were called upon to form patrols or guard groups, often led by a GI... To their credit, however, there is not a single mention of an abuse of power on their behalf" (Byrum, p. 220).

Once the GI candidates' victory had been certified, they cleaned up county government, the jail was fixed, newly elected officials accepted a $5,000 pay limit and Mansfield supporters who resigned were replaced.

The general election on November 5 passed quietly. McMinn County residents, having restored the rule of law, returned to their daily lives. Pat Mansfield moved back to Georgia. Paul Cantrell set up an auto dealership in Etowah. "Almost everyone who knew Cantrell in the years after the Battle' agree that he was not bitter about what had happened" (Byrum pp. 232-33; see also New York Times, 9 August 1946, p. 8).

The 79th Congress adjourned on August 2, 1946, when the Battle of Athens ended. However, Representative John Jennings Jr. from Tennessee decried McMinn County's sorry situation under Cantrell and Mansfield and the Justice Department's repeated failures to help the McMinn County residents. Jennings was delighted that "...at long last, decency and honesty, liberty and law have returned to the fine county of McMinn.. " (Congressional Record, House; U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C., 1946; Appendix, Volume 92, Part 13, p. A4870).

THE LESSONS OF ATHENS

Those who took up arms in Athens, Tennessee, wanted honest elections, a cornerstone of our constitutional order. They had repeatedly tried to get federal or state election monitors and had used armed force so as to minimize harm to the law-breakers, showing little malice to the defeated law-breakers. They restored lawful government.

The Battle of Athens clearly shows how Americans can and should lawfully use armed force and also shows why the rule of law requires unrestricted access to firearms and how civilians with military-type firearms can beat the forces of government gone bad.

Dictators believe that public order is more important than the rule of law. However, Americans reject this idea. Brutal political repression is lethal to many. An individual criminal can harm a handful of people. Governments alone can brutalize thousands, or millions.

Law-abiding McMinn County residents won the Battle of Athens because they were not hamstrung by "gun control " They showed us when citizens can and should use armed force to support the rule of law.
