George my 9 year old rescued Giant Schnauzer is now fighting for his life. He was prescribed Previcox by his vet for his arthritis pains. Following the vet recommendation I administered the tablets with food. After only two days and two tablets he started projectile vomiting, drinking a lot of water, being dizzy and manifesting all the symptoms of poisoning.
I Googled the name of the drug "Previcox" and "side effects" and I wish I would have done it BEFORE giving giving George the drug. To my astonishment, there are hundreds and hundreds of personal testimonies written by people who administered their dogs the same drug, their pets manifested exactly the same symptoms like my George and finally, had their dogs ending up dead or barely escaped death with irreversibly damaged stomachs, liver, kidney or hearts.
From an article published in 2006:
"The FDA has released information concerning non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pets -- including Metacam, Deramaxx, Previcox and Rimadyl -- that shows they have been connected to 22,000 cases of illness in dogs, almost 3,000 of which were fatal."
What causes death by Previcox? Acording to one of the hundreds of testimonies I found on the Internet written by a dog owner who lost his pet to Previcox poisoning,
"The Previcox apparently starts first by forming ulcers on the stomach and as more Previcox is administered it becomes ulcer upon ulcer until the stomach acids (full of Previcox) begin to leak out. It seams it first attacks the kidneys and liver. Then it begins to destroy all the protective membranes that are protecting all of the other organs. In the end it makes its final attack on the heart."
Read the rest here: http://www.k911.biz/Previcox_Emails/main.php
Previcox is the veterinary version of the Vioxx (prescribed for arthritis in humans) and it is made by Merial which is a branch of Merck. As you may already know, Vioxx was pulled off the market by the FDA after thousands of people ended up dead after taking the drug. Yet, the same company continues to push Previcox which has the same risks and causes deaths in animals.
Before starting your dog on Previcox I beg you: please, if you love your dog go to http://www.k911.biz/Petsafety/PrevicoxEmails.htm and read Rowdy's tragic story as well as other hundreds and hundreds of emails sent by other pet owners who tragically killed their pets by poisoning them with Previcox.
Update at 11:06 PM
George vomited for the third time today and he is very weak, shaking...refused the yogurt but my wife cooked a little beef and carrot soup and gave it to him a few minutes ago, licked the bowl. We expect he will vomit it shortly but that's all we can do until tomorrow morning. We put plastic bags all over the bedroom floor, makes it easier to clean. We'll see what happens until tomorrow when the vet office opens.
I am royally pissed on the vet who did not warned me about the potential side effects and on the company who makes and pushes such a dangerous drug which is banned for humans; if George dies, I'll make taking this drug off the market one of my life goals. I just learned another side effect is extreme aggression (probably caused by pain) and read about a little girl disfigured by a dog who was given Previcox. Dog owners need to know what the risks associated with this drug are. I will start a website and put all the effort and Internet knowledge I am capable of to make it pop on top of every Google search when people are searching the name of this drug.
UPDATED 10-23-2014 (five years after I published this blog entry)
The website that had Rowdy's story as well as hundreds of other testimonials is no longer online. I managed to find some archived internet pages of that website using the Wayback Machine. You can read them here: https://web.archive.org/web/20140701032307/http://www.k911.biz/Previcox_Emails/main.php

ReplyDeleteMy old, very loved dog is also experiencing horrible side effects. I don't know from one day to the next, if I'll have to have her euthanized. Unable to walk now. I feel sadly responsible for what is actually the drug company's fault. It's all about the dollar.....
DeleteI had a toy poodle that had arthritis I tried previcox then read the side effects also tried rimadyl again same problem. A friend told me to give him turmeric and his food twice a day I did that and he had no more pain it was better than any kind of medication that the doctors prescribe. The amount of turmeric you use depends on your a dog's weight. The one drawback with turmeric is if your dog has gallstones he can't use it. Also it works well for people but the same goes if you have gallstones do not use it. Check out the medicinal uses for turmeric online.
DeleteMy 9 year old Sharpei was just given this medicine last Monday and now he's gone. Do not and I repeat do not give your animals this medicine!!!
DeleteMy vet prescribed this today. She got 1/2 of the 227 mg pill. I decided to look it up and I got very upset at what I read. She won't be taking anymore of it. She's been sleeping quite a bit. I don't know what to do for her pain, why do they prescribe stuff that can hurt/kill them. This makes me so angry.
DeleteHave to say that after losing our dog, I too believe that Previcox was to blame. Heavy panting, rasping at times & anemia.
DeleteI would strongly suggest that folk use an alternative to this drug if you value your dog's life.
Previcox made no difference in my dog and I put him on T Relief, Traumeel and omg he is like a puppy again!! Why don't vets recommend this?
DeleteMy 5.5 yo Rotty was prescribed Previcox. Sign of vomiting, jaundice... Her Alkaline phosphatase on Aug. 20 was 92. During this period of time, she was prescribed Previcox and been taking for a consecutive period of two weeks as advised by my vet. November 12, her Alkaline phosphatase was 2906!!! My beloved Dai Hei passed away on the 22th. In retrospect . Previcox could very well be the culprit of her death.

ReplyDeleteMy 12-year-old Pomeranian was recently diagnosed with acute arthritis and was prescribed Previcox. He has not experienced any adverse reactions, but has seemed to get around much better. However, reading the horror stories on this page has prompted me to search for a natural alternative. There are several holistic alternatives available. Acupuncture it's one, but it can be costly. Supplements are also available, such as glucosamine chondroitin and sources of Omega 3 to reduce inflammation and lubricate joints. With a bit of homework one will be able to find a suitable alternative remedy for your dog and your wallet.
DeleteIt's an nsaid and nsaid do have all the same side effects in pets as humans and actually break down cartilage. In dogs with kidney, eye or even ear problems (yeast in the ears) the side effects can be sudden death. Same as in humans with diabetes, history of ulcers, cataracts. It can cause blindness and kidney failure in sick amd elderly pets

My dog Ajax was prescribed this last week. He started acting drunk and couldn't walk or eat just lots of water. Now he has an ulcer that is bleed but don't know if it is purferated yet. Please don't ever give this med to your dog. The Vet does not want to come right out and say this was the cause but I know it was. He was on Rymidol before and was fine but they told me this was better. Please we need this off the market. I still don't know how my best friend will be. My heart hurts.

I am so sorry to hear about the problems you all have had with Previcox. I have a min-pin that ruptured a disk in his back and was in excruciating pain. Our vet prescribed rimadyl which did absolutely nothing - in fact, his pain got worse. It was to the point you couldn't even look at him without him yelping. She then prescribed tramadol and previcox and his pain completely vanished. He was only on it for about 4 days before we were able to get him an appointment for surgery. Without those drugs he would have stayed in excruciating pain. He exhibited none of the symptoms you all are writing about. I suppose we were lucky. Is it possible that the dosages prescribed by your vets are way too high? We were giving our dog half a pill twice a day and like I said, he went from being so painful he couldn't stand up and didn't even want to drink water to being a pain free normal dog and wanted to play all the time - we kept him in strict confinement.

I just finished reading the story about Rowdy and he says that when he called Merck they told him the drug would be out of his system in 8 hours. When we took our dog to the specialist for his back surgery, he told us that it would take 72 hours for the drug to clear his system and he would not do the surgery until then. I trust the specialist over Merck "customer support" any day!

It may be a coincidence, but, our dog took Previcox for a pulled shoulder. Within 2-3 days, he lost his appetite, started vomiting and has been on an IV all week.

It is not a coincidence.
Before prescribing Previcox your vet should have disclosed to you the possible side effects of the drug including the fact that it may kill your pet.
Go to the manufacturer's website and read the drug fact sheet; the paper is expressly warning about these possible side effects and instructs veterinarians to disclose them to the pet owners before prescribing the drug. If something should happen to your dog you should go after the vet for negligence.
I pray for your dog to survive. Mine (barely) did make it and it took him two weeks to pull it through.
Since the Previcox poisoning incident we enjoyed George's company for another 1 1/2 years. Unfortunately last month he was diagnosed with liver cancer. We put him to sleep on Valentine's Day, February 14 of 2011. Here is the blog entry we wrote for him: http://transsylvaniaphoenix.blogspot.com/2011/02/...
Good luck and get well to your pup.

Thank You for alerting me to this poison. I have noticed it does nothing for my dog. I am stopping it today. my question is is there a contraindication with Valium 5mg seems to work much better and what is the correct dose for a 12 y/o 56lb. dog with hip problems. I have been giving her Dasuquin as well with no noticeable change(2 tabs for dogs 60lbs and over). The 5mg Valium seems to work much better. These other meds seem like over priced crap!
Thank You!

I am so, so heartbroken to learn about all the serious problems with the dogs taking Provicox. My large size rescue shepard mix has been on it for the third month, fortunately without any side effects. She could barely get up off the floor and had a miserable time getting around. This drug has done wonders for "Ginger", but I am now wondering how the long term will be. I am definitely going to have a long discussion with my vet. Good luck to all of you who have had problems with it. Again, I am so sorry.

I am so sorry about George. Yes - Prevacox kills - we just had to put out beloved Yellow Lab Willie down because of Prevacox. We had Willie on Zubrin for four years and he did beautifully and than Merial bought out the manufacturers of Zubrin and they just couldn't have Zubrine competing with their Prevacox - the killer drug. Willie was only on it for less than a month and started throwing up - we stopped giving it to him andt ook him right in to our vet were test results showed damage to his liver and kidneys in that short period of time - they tried everything they could to save him but to not avail. Thanks so mucm Merial for killing our dog!! How many more dogs are you goihg to kill with your Prevacox!!

Oh my goodness! My Yellow Lab j(Thor) just turned 12 and has been on Deramaxx for over a year with no side effects. He went from a groaning dog to walking without a limp (within limits to excersise).. Today my vet told my husband it was discontinued because the company mixed the formula with human supplies. He then suggested Previcox. I am a Registered Nurse and look up all meds so I am greatfull for your info. I still have not found a viable option but I am so sorry for your loss and insight. Thank you.

I took my 9 year old bassett hound to the vet on a friday for possible hip problems and might i mention she was overweight at 95 lbs. and the vet said she might have arthritis, but she could get around ok, but not as good as usual thats why we took her to the vet. But to make a long story short, we lost our beloved DAZY to a drug called Previcox. We gave her a pill a day like they told us. First day was ok ,second day was back to her old self, .third day,. she got up ok but after taking Previcox227 the third day she was breathing heavy all day, and pacing the floors and ended up dying with blood coming out of her mouth. We loved our dog very much and always will.So if you love your dog as much as we do ......DON'T EVER GIVE THEM PREVICOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's such an interesting post on arthritis in dogs. Grayson, a 2 year old male Maine Coon presented with a significant lameness on the left rear leg after falling from the kitchen counter. An xray was inconclusive and a CT scan was performed that revealed a fracture in the growth plate of the left femur in AVDH veterinary hospital. The head of the femur was pinned back into position and he was sent home with cage confinement and medication. At the 1 month recheck, Grayson is back to his old self and his parents are excited with his recovery. Grayson once again loves to jump up on things and cause trouble.

I'm a veterinarian. I encourage all pet owners to look up all drugs given, and do my best to notify of the major side effects at the time of discharge. Look up any drug label and you will see it is impossible to recite every side effect of every drug ever reported.
I do not use Previcox, or Deramaxx. I rarely prescribe this class of drugs (known as NSAIDs) unless my hands are absolutely tied and the pet is in pain and nothing else works.
However, that being said...please try to understand that the same mechanism by which these drugs stop pain is what causes the side effects. It is nothing specific to Previcox or Deramaxx or Rimadyl. These drugs are not "toxic," not made wrong, and not contaminated.
These drugs are like Aspirin for dogs, and almost everyone is aware that aspirin causes bleeding ulcers in humans. They work by inhibiting prostaglandins. Prostaglandins cause pain. Prostaglandins also help keep up the integrity of the lining of the stomach and intestines. When we give these drugs, it does its job by stopping prostaglandins and making the pain go away, but they also stop prostaglandins in the stomach and ulcers can develop as a consequence.
We can't tell the body to only stop making this chemical in the hips or spine, but keep making it in the stomach. That's not how drugs work. It's a risk of the drug, so weighing the benefits vs. the risks and being aware of side effects and early signs of problems is the ONLY thing we can do.
I'd just like to say one more time that I am not defending these products, I rarely ever use them on my patients. I am just trying to turn this emotional discussion into an informed discussion. Please take it upon yourselves to research any drug you put in to your pet's body, and in to your or your children's body for that matter. Always ask your doctor if you have questions. If they are not willing to discuss your concerns with you, move on to a doctor who will.

So sorry for some of the issues people are experiencing with thier pets. I have only had wonderful experiences with previcox for several of my elder dogs. They were all over 50 lbs. This was after exhausting several other products including all natural stuff too. The relief it gave them was incredible. One of my dogs could only walk by having this pill. Again, they were within 1 to 2 years of passing. It took the pain away and they were running around the house and yard again.

The other day, my other dog a small pomeranian was walking funny so I took him to the vet and he showed me how his knee popped out and how to stretch the leg to fix it...meanwhile he put him on a very low dosage..of prevocox..(it was 1/2 a tablet of 57 mg. per day) told me to do it for 2 - 3 days and then I should be able to quit using it. He was right, Casey showed improvement right away and was right back on track. I don't know, maybe the dogs were given too much for thier bodies and it worked against them. For me it has been so helpful...also, the people I have sent to my vet for this for thier pets have also raved about the results. Not every products is best for everyone.. So sorry for the bad experiences I truly know the heart break of a sick pet.. I have between 5 - 8 pets in my home most of my life! Hope this helps someon
well now Im worried..My big standard poodle was laying around not even moving and groaning ..I took her to the vet he put her on 1/2 pill of privicox a day and another pill for her dementia..within 6 hours she was up acting like a young dog...she has been having a great time running with the labs I have .she is eating and acting great..she has been on it for about 2 weeks..now after reading all these [posts guess I should wean her off. Boy you never know what is best to do....
ReplyDeleteMy 3 year old mix lab /Shepard has two bad back legs. The vet said we would have to put him down. He was growling when we petted him and couldn't go down stairs, had to walk w front legs only. We tried rx but it made him sick. So we found an all natural supplement that is vet tested with scientific studies that naturally reduces inflammation. After a few weeks he was going up and down stairs again (thank goodness that's how he goes to the restroom), stopped growling (from pain) and the yellow in his eyes is gone. Better energy and not anxious anymore .. Just happy. No side effects since its all natural it won't tear up his stomach or have toxic side effects. We are so thankful bc we were close to putting him down and he's my kids buddy. If you want the order link, send me your email. Many happy days in the park! Manymissions@gmail.com

I wish I have read way before. My German Shepard female dog has been on prIvicox. She started to have seizures. She is ok but seeing her in pain just kills me. I am stopping this med today and calling the Vet. Tomorrow for not telling the side effects. This medicine is not the cheapiest . I love my dog and I will anything to save her. Thank you everyone for post your painful experiences but it may give a chance for my dog to live. God bless you.
ReplyDeleteOur 12 year old cocker had surgery in December. Was prescribed Previcox for post-surgery pain. I only gave it to her two nights as I am very leery of drugs. Since that time, she has been eating less and less no matter what we offer her. Very lethargic - doesn't even want to go for walks. Staggers a lot. Today she only had two bites of food and rejected the rest. Have not notices excessive intake of water, and no vomiting, but lots of diarrhea. Could she be suffering from side effects of previcox? We are now wondering if we should have her put down. We just don't know what to do. She is skin and bones. It is terribly sad to see her.
ReplyDeleteI have a 10-year-old Brussels Griffon who has been on Previcox for some time with severe arthritis in one leg. The last three days I have noticed no appetite and then started vomiting mucous-like vomit with specks of blood and black, tarry stools (which is a very high sign of blood). He is wobbly and very lethargic. I am cooking him brown rice with chicken right now to see if he will eat something. My sister is a vet tech and she said that Rimadyl and Previcox has those side effects. I am beside myself watching this little guy the way he is. Checking with the vet in the morning. Praying for all of you with pets suffering from the same side effects.
ReplyDeleteGuud luck with your pup. It is very important to replace the liquids he is losing and keep him hydrated so buy liquid electrolytes from the drug store and force him to drink (use a teaspoon or a syringe.
ReplyDeleteOur Golden Retreiver Cheech - 12 years, took Previcox for 3 months - and we thought he was just declining with age, until he stopped eating. Monday April 15, 2013 we took him to the vet first thing - he was in Renal Failure, and since his prior bloodwork was normal, the Vet realized it was the Previcox that poisoned him. He has been getting fluids all week - and Thursday 4/18/13 it looked like we would have him back today. Then he had for the first time in his life a Grand Mal Seizure late yesterday, and he has been in a coma since. By the way Merial (Previcox) is paying all our vet bills - doesn't help our boy one bit - but at least once less burden. The Vet said we will probably have to put him to sleep this afternoon - 4/19/13 - because he hasn't woken and has had 2 more seizures - NOT a happy pet owner!!!
ReplyDeleteOur poor old boy - he didn't deserve this - at all!!!
My dog just died from prevacox.
ReplyDeleteIt feels like somebody literally tore my heart out. I only gave her one pill then stupidly googled the drug afterwards. She went downhill quickly and yes it did burn holes in her stomach. I am left with 6000 dollars in vet bills and I had to watch the love of my life die a horrible death.
My dog just died from Prevacox. She was seven years old.
ReplyDeleteI only gave her one pill.
She suffered a horrible death.
She died on March 29, 2013.
Sorry for your loss Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteAnother needles death caused by a dangerous drug.
My dog Tango too died from Previcox after being prescribed for what the doctor said was arthitis. She did not do a blood test to my knowledge nor did she take xrays to confirm the arthritis diagnosis. Twice i went back to the vet to ask for a different medication as he seemed to be lethargic. Twice they would not give me anything else but told me to give 1/2 the dosage and that it would take time to get better. 4 days later he died from a ruptured spleen/internal bleeding. How many dogs have to suffer before this is taken off the market? Is there a class action suit? I am interested.
ReplyDeleteThis drug was given to my 3 month old boxer puppy in February 2011 after his neuter surgery to prevent his pain, since he was cryptorchid and had 3 incisions. My boy is now going on 3 years old this October, and while he didn't have any obvious side effects, i am concerned he took this drug to begin with. As i see it's usually prescribed to dogs with joint issues like arthritis. And I'm also worried if it's the cause of him having a sensitive stomach, and having the occasional vomiting spell every few months. Interesting info to come across. I'm sorry for every ones loss of their beloved pets due to this medication :(
ReplyDeleteI am a boxer Mom & have had boxers all my life. It's typical for boxers to have sensitive bellies and occasionally vomiting. I got used to it lol. I feed my current boxer brown rice & chicken & broth. I also have a "doggy Tums" script from the Vet but alot of times I just feed her yogurt. She was taking Previcox but not more than 1/2 to a 1/4 tab after she had acl surgery. She also has arthritis along her spine & some in her joints. I think I'll go with a baby aspirin for her pain. I'll flush the Previcox. Hugs to all the pet dads & moms here. :)

ReplyDeleteStay away from Provicox! My chihuahua dislocated her hip. Prior to scheduling any surgery, my doctor told me to give her Provicox. My dog was still normal except for her legs. The a few day days after she stop eating...a dog with great appetite...then she started vomiting excessively and diarrhea with black stool meaning blood in her stool. After 4 days of not getting her to eat I took her to the emergency vet. Besides the dislocated hip, now she has pancreatitis., users in her stomach.which could kill the dog. The doctor told us not to use Provicox anymore cause it does cause major stomach problem lik pancreatic. A few thousand dollars after. My dog is still trying to recover from this and we need to get her healthy before any leg surgery can be done which is the original problem we started with. My poor chihuahua has gone to so much because of this medication and she not out of the wood yet. Please don't use this drugs on your pet.. I'm hoping my dog makes it through this. Bonita's owner.
ReplyDeleteProvicox just killed my healthy dog two days ago. I brought her in for a dislocated hip that was 100% fixable .Then Provicox was prescribed and a couple of days after my dog started vomiting and having diarrhea and lost of appetite. My poor chihuahua suffered so much on this than from her leg pain. We end up in emergency Veterinary hospital where an internal it's specialist had to do an ultrasound and found ulcers that lead to pancreases. The vomiting lead to fluid in her lungs and hard of breathing which then they had to incubate her to give her much needed oxygen. All this suffering let to a cardiac arrest that killed my dog in two weeks. $6000 layer, what started as a leg problem end up to the death of my dog. It's not the money but the suffering my dog had to go through. A Veterinarian internals specialist from the emergency hospital that told us that Provicox causes ulcers and pancreases and not this site. If you love your pet and don't believe what others have shared here then believe an internal specialist. I have lost my loving dog. There is nothing I can do to get her back but I just want to prevent anyone else from losing their beloved pet.
ReplyDeleteI have just read all the things people have said about this medication and just don't know what to do. My german shepherd female of seven years was diagnosed with CDRM about five months ago and given four to live! This was a shock in itself. Then the course of the illness has not gone as expected and saw another vet who said she could have spinal degeneration/arthritis and prescribed this dreaded drug. She already cannot tolerate metacam so this is likely to kill her! She is due xrays etc on Friday so am not going to give her another one of these pills. Could someone from the UK give me some advice about where to get more natural ways of dealing with this. She is seeing a vet for acupuncture. She seems ok at the moment but cannot take this risk and like CDRM it all needs more awareness. Thanks for reading this

My little Yorkie is also going to lose his life because of this drug. We were told he had arthritis and was prescribed Previcox. He took it less then 2 weeks when he stopped eating and drinking, was vomiting with bloody stools. Took him to the vet they did an ultrasound and was told he had kidney and liver damage along with pancrititis. after paying thousand of dollars trying to save his life I was told he is not going to make it and that he should be put to sleep. As far as I'm concerned that vet that gave him that medicine killed him. Something has to be done to get this off the market!!
ReplyDeleteWell, my worse nightmare is coming true. The vet wants to put my dog to sleep. Two weeks ago he was brought to the vet for his shots and I was told he was healthy. The prescribed him Previcox for arthritis. After a few days of giving him this drug I thought it was helping him but little did I know it was poisoning him. Only after a few days he ended up at the vet hospital with liver & kidney damage, an ulcer, pancritis and a heart murmur. After thousands of dollars spent they decided we should put him to sleep. When he was admitted they brought up this med to me saying it could be the cause (which is how it was brought to my attention) but after a while they said it was antifreeze which I know was a lie as my dogs only go outside with us and are on a leash and our cars are always in a garage. I didn't even have a driveway till a week ago. I know this drug poisoned my dog and I think every animal owner should be aware of it. I found a website where tons of people gave this drug to their dog and their dogs suffered the exact symptons as mine and died. I am heart broken and feel so bad seeing we gave him this drug trusting the Bolton Veternarian. It needs to be stoppes so no one else will have to deal with this heartache. If they use to give this drug to humans but banned it because it was causing death so why are they still giving it to animals? This drug has to be stopped and I am going to do whatever I have to to get the word out so no more dogs will die.
ReplyDeleteReally sorry for your pet. I would recommend you to get a second opinion from another vet before putting him to sleep. It may cost a little bit of extra money but you will be at peace knowing you did all you could do for him.
ReplyDeleteAs for the killer drug Previcox: spread the word on Facebook, Twitter and your own blog (if you have one). Talk with your relatives, friends and other dog owners whenever you meet them. People need to know about this poison prescribed as a "cure"
Thank you for your kind words. I refused to put my dog to sleep and went to Fox news in Connecticut. A reporter came over my house and we did an interview about the drug and they aired it. After that the vet hospital kept treating my Yorkie Benji and he is improving every day!! He is eating a little and drinking on his own. His counts are down and it looks good. He's still not hisself but hopefully he will come home soon. I called the manufacturers about this drug and put in a case with them. Hopefully they pay the vet bill. I also talked to a lawyer about getting this drug off the market. I am spreading the word everywhere I go. I even made a facebook page and people are joining. Since my interview was aired I am getting emails and letters in the mail from people who lost their pets to this horrible drug. Thanks to you for without this page I would never of known how bad it is.
ReplyDeleteThat is really great news, your dog pulling it through is nothing short of a miracle.
ReplyDeleteI would really appreciate if you could send me a link to the TV aired segment on Previcox and if possible your Facebook comments page.
I am absolutely sickened reading this. Today is my 2nd day (and will be the last day) to give my dog Previcox. I wish I would have read this two days ago. I trust the vet is giving her what she needs. I will be calling him in the morning to discuss. I am so sorry for all of your losses. I cannot bear the thought of losing my baby, Onyx, and pray that no damage has been done. Hopefully your posts are saving lives.
ReplyDeleteMy 15 year old dog has been on Previcox for one month as a treatment for her osteoarthritis. She was a very healthy and energetic dog for her age, but has since been off her food, lost weight, has trouble walking and standing. Her eyes look vacant. I thought that the end was near.
ReplyDeleteThe vet took tests of her liver before prescribing Previcox and said that she was not in danger. No other side effects were discussed. I'm so very thankful I found this and other sites that document the adverse and sometimes fatal side effects.
I am taking my dog off Previcox and calling the vet tomorrow morning.
My heart goes out to the dogs and their humans who have suffered because of Previcox.

Here is the info you asked for. Update on my little Yorkie Benji. He was in the hospital for 16 days as I refused to put him down. Tjey told me only a miracle would save him. Well I prayed everyday and my husband and I were at the vet 3 to 4 times a day everday loving him and trying to get him to respond. The night before they were going to put a feeding tube in his neck I went there and kept rubbing the gravy from the food trying to get him to eat. He would lick it but kept snubbing the food and not drinking water either. The next morning the vet called me and said "Benji Ate" You can imagine how happy I was. Everyday got better & better and after 16 days of fighting for his life my little guy is home and happy. He is eating like a trooper and is finally starting to drink water. My vet bill is almost 1700.00 And the manufacturer of the pill is paying 5000.00 of it. The vet that gave him the pill is not the vet who saved his life but they are from the same hospital. She is a very young doctor and is wonderful. She never gave up on him even after the specialist and everyone else was throwing in the towel. I asked her to please save his life and she did! He will always be on a special diet now and probably be on meds the rest of his life. He has high blood pressure now so he is on meds for that too. But I love him and do what ever it takes to give him a good life. Still this drug is being given out to other animals.
Please everyone, If your told to put your dog to sleep a few days after giving him this drug, REFUSE! It takes at least 2 weeks of treatmentand love to bring your dog back around. I refused to put Benji to sleep and went to the hospital 3 to 4 times a day to love and cuddle him and try to entice him to eat. It was a struggle for all of us especially my little Benji but he is a fighter and I prayed everyday. God heard my prayers and saw how hard Benji was fighting for his life so he saved him. The vet told me many people will give up after a few days and have their dog put to sleep. Don't do it!! Refuse and make then treat your dog as long as you can and call the manufacturer to put in a case so they will pay the bill. Don't ever give up. Only you can save him/her. The vet said she couldn't believe how dedicated me and my husband are with Benji. He became their star miracle dog and now when he goes for his weekly checkup he thinks he owns the place! The girls love him. Anyway the reason for this post is to tell you all not to give up. This drug is poisoning dogs and they are not going to get better in a few days. And during his/her hospital stay be there as much as you can. Love helps!! Please spread the word about this horrific drug and join my Facebook page on this drug and share it with everyone.

That's a truly inspiring story, thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOur George made it too, but barely. We nursed him back to health at home and it took him almost two weeks until he started drinking then eating on his own. It was an epic struggle considering how big he was - 120 lb on the scale. He lived another two years after this episode and finally passed away after being diagnosed with pancreas and liver cancer.
Here is the blog entry I wrote for him after he crossed the rainbow bridge:

I'm so so sorry about sweet George. I'm happy you had him for a couple of more years before the Lord took him to heaven. I know Benji's life span will be cut short because of this drug but I will cherish everyday extra I have with him. Remember love never dies and George will always love you and his spirit is always with you. They love us so unconditionally. What love is better then that? Just know someday we will be with our little ones again.
ReplyDeleteThanks to you and George Benji's life was spared. It wasn't easy but I just couldn't give up on him. Many many thanks!!
Your story about George made me cry. You were his hero and he was yours. You were lucky to have each other. It was in God's plans for you two to share your lives together. I'm sure George is happy in heaven waiting patiently to see you again. God Bless you both.

I live In England . My Lhasa has been on Previcox for 3 years now without any problems. She could barely walk and was in considerable pain before my vet prescribed these tablets.
ReplyDeleteAll medication human or animal have side effects, and some more than others can have a bad reaction, or sadly even death.
I am just stating my view on giving this medication to my dog, and I do make sure she sees the vet every 3 months, when she is due for repeat meds. I thick all pet owners should discuss any type of medication with their vet before agreeing to give ant to their beloved pets
9/2012 My Jasmine was havieng some really bad issues, later diagnosed as colitis. Previcox 227 was one of the meds she was prescribed. QTY was only 3. This date 11-4-2013 while checking left over meds I found 2 that were never given to her Reading this about others who have had it prescribed for their pets and lost them due to this med my intention is to destroy. I other meds that have no longer been given to my Jasmine, which I just found and am looking them up. Thank you for the education on this. Jasmine is only 6 and I intend on having her around and healthy another 8 years or better if that's possible. God Bless all of you who have suffered the loss of a beloved furkid.

ReplyDeleteMy blue heeler was hit by a car last week and had her leg broken. It was splinted up Friday and I gave her half a 227 mg Previcox on Saturday morning and by that evening she began having diarrhea. I gave her another on Sunday morning and her diarrhea became severe and she began vomiting, drinking huge amounts of water and was somewhat non responsive and lethargic. I began to suspect an adverse reaction to her medication and this was one of the first sites I came across that had pertinent information. I did not give her another dose and after two days of detox and some Pepto Bismol she got over it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this, I believe you helped save my dog's life.
I have a Black Lad that is 14, He was having trouble getting up because of bad hips. Took him into the doc and was given Previcox. He was on it three month and started getting sick and would not eat, took him back to the doc and the doc. did blood work and said he would only make it two more weeks. My lab would not take his pill any more, but at first did him wonders. He has not had the Previcox for over a month now and has taken a lot of work and feeding him lots of potatoes, rice and meats, but is now gaining weight and doing a lot better now he is off the Previcox. His doc. now will not prescribe this drug again. At least we now have a few Doc. that will not prescribe anymore.
ReplyDeleteHi, I live in Ireland and my gorgeous 12 year old dog died last week secondary to previcox. Started on previcox on the 25/10/13 for arthritis and died on the 14/11/13. I stopped the drug on the 7/011/13. Like the other stories he was great first week up and active but then noticed he was off food off form and appeared to be nauseous ( retching occasionally which I misread for days ). However as he was always such a loyal dog and eager to please I really didn't realise how sick he was until I found a small lesion on his back. Vets dismissed my concern cover previcox completely. On exam he has an enormously elevated white cell count which is in response to some massive inflammation/ infection had lost almost 3 kg since commencing on the drug . On the third day at the veterinary hospital he began to bleed from his mouth ,nose and cannula site . He had what is known as disseminated intravascular coagulation(DIC) so we had to euthanize him . Vets continued to dismiss my concerns relating to previcox despite not really giving me an reasonable answer for his death. Only way to prove it would have been an autopsy and felt kids wouldn't have been able to deal with that situation. Dog was also on the higher dose of 227 mg when manufactures recommend 5 mg per kg. he was 25 kgs. I feel I really let my dog down by not familiarising myself with this drug prior to him commencing it. I had recently taking in two rescue kittens and I misread his withdrawal as anxiety about the kittens - he could be anxious at times ! His buddy of 11 years is lost without him , keeps wandering around house and garden looking for him ! I have no doubt that previcox killed my dog and after several discussions with vet he has agreed to report it to medicines board .

Our Cavalier Molle just died after eating Previcox for his stiff back for three days, vomited blood in the morning and we went quickly back to the vet. Where he was treated for two days but after receiving pancreatic inflammation and fluid in the lungs after his own vomit, it became too much for our little fighter.

Hello, I'm french, so excsuez me if what I write is not very understandable .. I use the Google translator.
My dog Nono English Bullterrier of 12 years died the 15/12/2013 has cause of the previcox.
I shall like knowing what treatment(processing) has make has my dog, it me work many. I know that it is the previcox which to kill her(it) but which damages that made has my nono? I saw him(it) suffering but that it is him(it) crossed(spent)?
I take him(it) to the veterinarian for the evil on one of this back leg, the degenerative osteoarthritis or damaged ligament, injection morphine+metacam, nono reacted apparently well, puts its leg and walking(step) has little ready good.
The veterinarian prescribes him(her) 1 stamp(tablet) PREVICOX 227Mg for 10 days.
2eme in the daytime of grip(taking), my nono is weakened but suffers not many of its leg, I am relieve but it is tired, eats little and drinks little while usually he drinks a lot.
3eme in the daytime of grip(taking), he(it) does not eat and does not drink not at all, make small liquid saddles, gets up and walks(works) but remains on-the-spot during times(weathers) to asser surprising as has to think and rests(bases) at the end of about meters, tired and has for girls tou, I begin has to worry me.
4eme in the daytime, he(it) coughs a lot, trembles, vomited, gets up no more, pants, na anything drunk or to eat for 2 days, I watch over it all evening long, I think in of urgency, hesitate (very too much), tired I fall asleep, 2 barking wake up in the early hours, I rush to see my dog he(it) is in the lounge(show) grow longer on the highly-rated, the mouth enters opened, the language(tongue) which moves and the fixed look, me does not include and speaks to him(her) in the affectionate, it does not react, it does not breathe any more, my dog is dead man ., be 4 has 5 days after the grip(taking) PREVICOX
I regret many not being to go The same evening / night in the urgence.terriblement
I shall never know really from what he died and what made him(her) the PREVICOX and if somebody can get clearer on symptom which had my nono before leaving, ca tortures me the spirit not to know from what he died.
I specify well that I have to take my dog to the in great shape veterinarian put has by his(her, its) evil has the leg, 5 days later he died in the suffering.
Previcox can certainly relieve pains of your dog but he can also kill him(it) in the suffering.
My kind and gentle constant companion of 14 years was put to sleep on 12/23/13. Prior to her bloody vomiting and having no appetite, she had taken Previcox. 57 mg. I gave her quite a few. In the end, the kidney damage was so extensive and severe, there was nothing left to do but end her misery. I'll miss her forever and I'm sorry for the pain she had to endure because of this.
ReplyDeletewhat is wrong with you people??, previcox must be given along metronidazole, in order to prevent all the side efects most of you mention, like ulcers!! i've been giving both drugs to my 10 year old dog, for 3 days now and she's doing just great!!
ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with us people?
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should ask what's wrong with the manufacturer who is marketing this drug and is not asking veterinarians to disclose the deadly side effects or at least prescribe another drug to minimize the risk of ulcers and liver damage.
Not every pet owner is also a part-time vet. Expecting people to know this kind stuff beforehand is unrealistic.
While I appreciate YOUR experience with this "bad drug"; you certainly put me into a panic with our little girl who was prescribed this for an injured paw yesterday. Just an FYI: ANY drug can "kill". Have you watched TV lately and seen how drug commercials with their happy smiling faces are also filled with voiceovers of how a drug that will help you with your depression could ALSO cause "death, kidney failure and 10 other bad things"?
ReplyDeleteI called my vet and asked her for HER experiences with this drug and she felt confident with the factors with MY pet, that prescribing it was the right thing. You don't seem to take into account that the factors with YOUR pet may have caused his illness (and trust me...my pets are my CHILDREN. you do NOT wanna mess with me with my kids!), or that your vet who prescribed it did not perform blood samples ahead of time (depending on the age of the pet, that is a HUGE factor).
There is someone local to me here who is on Craigslist with REPEATED posts, claiming a local vet (not mine) is "killing animals" and needs to be "put out of business", and this is what your Previcox post reminds me of. Your experience means this drug KILLS. After all, you succeeded in making your headline pop up in my google search. I am not so sure that is a responsible way to make your case, as someone as stated. Plus, I did not see ANY follow up on this whole thing...and that "inexplicable reason" for 25 other comments not showing up seems...weird...at best.
There are over 100 comments only on this blog post from pet owners who lost their dogs to Previcox adverse reactions. If that is still not enough for you, see here: http://www.k911.biz/Previcox_Emails/main.php
ReplyDeleteGood luck with yours. I truly hope you won't come back crying and saying "I wish I would have listened to you all"

ReplyDeleteI am a veterinarian and have been working with dogs for 27 years. Before the availibity of the newer NSAID medications (specifically Deramaxx and Previcoxx) I would have very limited treatments for dogs with severe osteoarthritis or acute joint inflammation. These medications are very valuable in treating inflammation as well as improving geriatric dogs "quality of life" to the point that I feel that many of my patients have lived 6-12 months beyond where they might have been euthanized for immobility or suffering. With that said I have a few basic guidelines that I advise my clients on the use of these drugs:
1. Never ever use aspirin!!! aspirin stays in a dogs' tissues for 5-7 days, if a dog has been given aspirin and takes deramaxx or previcox, then you risk severe GI ulceration. Some OTC even "natural" remedies contain aspirin or other NSAIDS that can put your pet at risk. Other NSAIDS that are toxic to dogs include ibuprophen and naproxen. Do not use anything unless cleared by your vet.
2. Do not use any other NSAIDs along with Deramaxx or previcox. Other commonly prescribed meds include rimadyl, meticam, and etodolac. Ask your vet about appropriate "washout times" between giving one NSAID and another.
3. If you can afford it, have a blood panel done before and 2 weeks after starting these meds. Then regular 4-12 month screenings. I strongly recommend, but don't require these tests as long as pet owners follow my recommendations.
4. Use the lowest dose that works. Most dogs respond to half manufacturers recommended dose and some will be fine with a quarter dose. You can also adjust the interval from 24 to 36 or 48 hours "As needed". You should be able to tell if your dose is working by observing an improvement in limping or stiffness. If you see no improvement even with a "full" dose, then you might not need this medication, or something else may be going on.
5. Give your dog a "washout day" after 4 or 5 days on the medication. A washout day is a day where you skip his NSAID. This allows your pet to metabolize all the NSAID in his system and start the next dose the following day with essentially "zero" NSAIDS in his system.
6. Never give your dog an NSAID if he may be dehydrated. Most liver or kidney toxicities have occurred when a dehydrated dog is medicated. I had a patient that had a toxic dose after the owner gave him Deramaxx following heat stroke. Be sure your dog is eating and drinking and not vomiting or sick when you give him his arthritis medicine.
7. Try other evidence based, proven arthritis treatments. "Multimodal" arthritis treatments include nutritional supliments: glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega 3 fatty acid suplimentation along with NSAIDs and Adequan injections. Obesity managment is critical.
With all this said occasionally "Shit Happens", occasionally a patient will have a severe toxic reaction to a drug when 99.99% of other patients will be fine. I am saddened that some beloved family pets have been harmed by this medication, however I feel its a very beneficial drug if used with a little common sense.

to me
Hi just read everything on your post about f… Previcox, our boy Alfred a healthy 10 year old English Mastiff died on Saturday having been given this drug.
I am 100% sure it is this that killed him, all he had was a swollen elbow, xray said arthritis they gave him Previcox without a word to us that it could harm him nothing at all, and we stupidly done it 2 days later he was in a state black poo, vomiting this horrendous stuff up looked like the lining of his gut, heart rate up panting sort of out of it, we had to have him put to sleep, after the vet came out ran more blood, and said kidney failure, this boy had nothing wrong with him except a swollen elbow that he showed no sign of before last Tuesday its been quick, and a huge loss for us.
Just thought I should share, we are English but live in France, I don’t know if there is anywhere I can take this but let’s put it this way I am angry as hell
Alfred was a rescue and had a crap life before he came to us he was failed by humans and now failed again by humans that manufacture and prescribed this drug

We have just lost our loved collie dog from this terrible drug. She had only taken 3 doses. Our vet had called the company that makes the medication and they told him that yes the medication could kill with one dose. So we are not irresponsible the the company that makes this drug is.
ReplyDeleteI had a greyhound on previcox for 12 yrs..low dosage as she was born with erosive polyarthritis..I adopted her when she was only 4 months old..
ReplyDeleteShe did very well on Previcox and had swim therapy off and on for years..She was a swimmer and loved being out in the rain and cold..
She died from Lymphoma at 12...
Taking my beautiful lab to the vet tonight who is showing signs of previcox poisoning. The vet advise me to stop the medication if blood is in his poo. The vet did not explain the other sign affects. I believe i'am killing my beautiful lab with this drug. After reading this comment he will not be taking this drug anymore. I only hope he survives, at this stage the odds are against him.
ReplyDeletePosted a comment on February 24,2014 about my beautiful lab. Took him to the vet and the vet said he as numerous issues and doesn't know where to start. He is at home at the moment and not on previcox.Previcox has taken the life out of my beautiful boy. This drug that is suppose to be wonderful has only given my boy harm. He is a completely different dog and I know there is underlying issues that we are waiting to hear from the vet. How can a dog become life less and can hardly stand up. I beg anyone not to give this drug to your pet, it is a toxic drug and should be taken off the market. I believe vets have a responsibility prescribing this drug. Looking at my beautiful lab at the moment, he is trying to stand up and his legs are giving away. I feel quite sick that I have given him this drug and I was misinformed how serious the side affects can be and was unaware that it can cause death. If I had known this I would not have given this to my beautful lab max.
ReplyDeleteMy dog was also prescribed Previcox ...today. He had one dose, and he's had two severe seizures in the past two hours. He will not be taking anymore of this medication. I would sooner see him limp from arthritis or carry him around than watch him go through that again. Veterinarians should at least warn you of this if they are prescribing it. It's apparently a fairly common side effect from what I've been reading online.
ReplyDeleteMy poor 12 year old boy, Roscoe, has been on Previcox 227mg now for 5 years for arthritis and I am so shocked to read these reviews, he has gone down hill in the last 6 months, started panting and wretching, we took him to the vet and after x-rays vet said he had a collapsed trachea, he is getting unresponsive, staggering, panting, difficulty getting up and drinking loads of water, after reading these reviews my boy will not be getting anymore Previcox, just at the weekend I got him some glucosamine + chondroitin tablets from the health shop, hopefully these will help and I get to keep him for a while longer.
ReplyDeleteIf your dog has been on Previcox for such a long time and didn't manifested adverse effects, it is highly unlikely he will start having problems in the future.
ReplyDeleteSymptoms of Previcox poisoning usually start within 24-48 hours after administering the first doses. You are one of the lucky dog owners who will never have to deal with other people had to gone through with their dogs. My advice is since in your dog's case there are no side effects do not stop administering the drug.
Thanks for the reply, sorry for showing some ignorance about the Previcox poisoning, thought it would still be best to take him off it and try him on the natural remedies such as the glucosamine powder.
ReplyDeleteRe: Anonymous April 23, 2014 @ 6:50 am
ReplyDeleteMy dog was on NSAID for several years without complications. She developed the same symptoms that yours did. Fortunately. I have an extremely knowledgeable vet, and she was immediately diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, and started treatment immediately. This disease is extremely rare in canines, and there is only one vet who is able to test for it. She is located at UC Davis, where she conducts research on rare disorders.
After she was diagnosed, I did a great deal of research and found information possibly linking NSAIDs to Myasthenia Gravis. Of course, it is not evidence based, but I thought you should be aware. Given this disease is so rare, it is often left undiagnosed. Most vets never see a case throughout their whole career.
Thanks for this, I will I have a read up on it.
ReplyDeleteOur beautiful, loving, gentle Hungarian Viszla has just been diagnosed with prostrate cancer. He is only 5yrs 9mths old. I cannot imagine life without him.
ReplyDeleteWe saw an oncologist yesterday and the is not able to have surgery or radiotherapy because of where it is. He had his first chemotherapy yesterday and has been taken off metacalm and given Previcox 227mg.
After reading these comments I do not know what to do. The worrying thing is that he was given Previcox before his diagnosis and in a routine blood test it was picked up he had inflammation of the pancrease. I wondered where this had come from.
I will be contacting the vet again immediately before he starts asking them again .
Worried & concerned owner
My dog has been on previcox for 2 days, she is usually very outgoing and confident, she is now hiding in a corner and shaking, she is hunched as though she has abdominal pain. I am not giving her any more doses, but is this likely to be the cause of her behaviour? I am very worried about her.
ReplyDeleteI took my 13 year old beagle Oreo to the vet last Thursday because she woke up with a limp. They checked her and said it was probably arthritis. Like I said she is 13 and she is a bit overweight. They gave me a bottle of Previcox and some joint supplements. I stupidly gave her one of the Previcox as soon as we got home because I didn't want her to be in pain. Later on I started to read about the Previcox and came across your story and many others. I decided not to give her any more. She has only eaten twice since Friday, she is not drinking much water, she lays in the same spot almost all day, and today she has black tarry stools. I feel so awful. I always read up on medications for everyone in the house because I got drug induced lupus from a blood pressure medication so I stay away from pharmaceuticals now. I don't know why I gave her that stupid pill before I read up on it. The vet didn't say anything about possible side effects. I did some reading and I gave her some aloe vera juice with slippery elm, licorice root, alfalfa, ginger root and a couple of other herbs. They are supposed to help soothe the stomach lining and hopefully help her heal. I will let you know if it works so others can try it.

ReplyDeleteHi ,sorry to hear about everyone's loss of a loved one. I'm from Australia , we had also been prescribed Previcox 227. Had i known about this drug earlier , my beautiful 9 yr old malamute would still be alive . She died from the 2nd dose.
ReplyDeleteI am blaming myself now for not being cautious about the drug ,i google everything out of paranoia. But I did not think twice when my trusted vet gave her this drug
Yes i blame myself and yes i should have asked more questions , but at that time , she was immobile and something had to be done , she did get an injection that was very effective, but was also prescribed this drug... from a trusted accredited Vet ,who was her treating Vet from when she was a pup.But he had not disclosed any information apart from the dosage instructions , 1 per day with meal. I don't condemn him for prescribing this , he might have successfully treated others , and they turned out alright , but now that i see there are so many cases of pets dieing , I dont want anyone else to make the same mistake.
I ask permission to post link or part of this blog to my facebook page, 'Indie Bear' in memory of her . I have emailed RSPCA and I am in transition of communicating with the Agricultural welfare dept of our government .I'm not sure if my efforts will be effective, since this has been a problem for a while , and would have been banned immediately if people had an open case about it.I am angry that this has happened so I want people to be more aware of this drug . As i said earlier , had i known about this and your blog, my beautiful girl would still be alive.
When will they take this deadly drug off the market? My beautiful sweet Samoyed was given this by mt. Vet for a slight fever. She was only 2 and had no arthritis issues at all!! We didn't give her all the pills. Thank god. She was in the ICU for 3 days and should have died at 2. I thought we were over this. My dog got extra skeletal oestesarcoma 4 years later at age 5 1/2 almost 6. This is bone cancer in her liver. This is the same organ that was hit at age 2 with previcox killing 40 percent of her liver. Vets will only tell me that this cancer is extremely rare ( even rarer starting in the liver). I know it was this previcox that did it. Most dogs die from a severe reaction. I guess mine lasted 4 more years. She only lasted 27 days after being diagnosed with this bone cancer growing in her liver! We tried surgery and Chemotherapy. The tumors kept growing in her liver and then to her lungs. No cancer in her breed line. Previcox should be taken off the market and the Vet should never have given this to her for a slight fever and should be out of business. My beautiful Aspen should't have had to suffer like this! She wasn't even 6 years old.
I, to can add my horror story along with so many, I lost my boxer Tia in the same way. By the time I picked up on what was happening it was to late. I found out May 26 Tia had Mass Cell Tumor, the vet gave her 6 months to 1 year max. But thanks to that disgusting pill (Previcox) she only made it 1 month and 4 days. My vet told me the same thing the pill is very good. I know I will never give any medication before I check for side effects. I also read Rowdys story and could relate to everything he said. We have to get this drug stopped before any other animals become another statistic. To me the love I had for Tia is so much more than a statistic. I feel so responsible for this out come, I can barely stay in the same room with myself. She trusted that I (her mommy) would protect her as she had protected me, Previcox I hate you.
ReplyDeleteRita
I started giving my older dog previcox due to age related aches and pains. 5 days later I notice that he's ataxic, wobbling when he moved. I thought it was because as he's aged his old cervical spine surgery was coming back to haunt him. I started getting suspicious it might be the drug. After reading your blog, I know it is the drug and he will never get it again. I only pray that he will be okay. This dog is the love of my life and if he dies I will never be the same.
ReplyDeleteMy Dobie has a limp, think it is a sprain from rough playing with another dog. The Vet gave her 10 Previcoxx 227 Mg tablets yesterday. I gave her one when we got home but after reading all these stories don't intend to give her any more. She drank a ton of water at mid day today, she wasn't hot or anything, just started drinking and I though she would never stop. Now, I am very worried
ReplyDeleteThank goodness someone has a site warning dogs and their owners about this drug. The Vets ARE NOT monitoring this drug after prescribing it. My beautiful Samoyed was given this by my vet fro a slight fever at the age of 1 1/2. She almost died from it. She spent 3 days in the ICU and watold that it was a miracle she survived. She had major liver failure. Then 4 years later she developed bone cancer in her liver. The same organ that was attacked by this drug. She lasted 27 days and died at the age of 5 1/2. IT WAS THIS DRUG THAT KILLED HER! Vets don't want to hurt working with this large drug company. It may help some dogs. However, they give you a case number when your dog gets ill. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU. Please beware and monitor your dog after being given this drug. Shame on Merial for not telling the truth about how many dogs have died or become seriously ill from this drug. They just want to sell their drugs. Vets should be warning dog owners too. They are NOT! Please beware.....
ReplyDeleteSorry Guys, but my GSD has been taking this for some time and it suits her well. She has got some quality of life back, entirely thanks to this drug. All drugs have side effects - even common aspirin. You just need to be aware of them and react accordingly. Always read the advice note in the packet BEFORE administering the drug. If you don't, you have only yourself to blame if you miss warning signs.
ReplyDeleteOur Border Collie (8 yrs) has had Previcox (227 mg) for over two years now following an accident that resulted in major surgery to both back legs (plating (fracture)). I have to say the drug has been the making of her, she now enjoys an active life and is happy and appears to be pain free. Just like humans one medication does not suit all.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of vomiting being a sign of pain in dogs. My dog had kidney stones once, and he vomited all the time and we never could figure out why until we took him to the doctor. I guess it could be a sign of arthritis too.

None of the links you provided are working. I had a Great Dane die from IMHA (immune mediated hemolytic anemia) because of Previcox. There used to be a site with a bunch of reports of very similar IMHA deaths after dogs were given this drug, but I can't seem to find it. Please email me at pupsavr4life@cox.net if you know of a working site that has gathered all of the deaths related to Previcox.
ReplyDeleteMy mixed breed (10yo) has been on Previcox 227mg at the rate of 1/2 tablet a day for the past 4 months. Have just purchased a further 3 months worth of tablets, (very expensive). No noticeable side effects so far and his condition (badly degraded front left elbow and associated limp) has improved. I am going to change his dosage to 1/2 tablet every other day - to see how little of this drug I can administer and still keep the pain at bay. My vet did recommend ongoing monitoring (blood tests) a couple of times a year to ensure all organ function normal. The experiences of some people using this drug is making me more alert to the possibility of problems long term tho, so I am going to the vet this week for a baseline check up for my dog and a discussion of this blog content.
ReplyDeleteMy 13mnth rottweiller was prescribed previcox 227mg on Sat 18th october and was dead at lunch time monday 20th october 2014
ReplyDeletemy beautiful boy had gastritis and it was given for the pain he was obviously in. our vet did not bother to find out what had caused the gastritis. Bereft
So sorry for your loss..
DeleteMy Irish Setter was recommended Previcox 227mg for pain. I gave him one tablet as prescribed. Last night he had diarrhea all night long and all today. He hardly ate anything this morning but did eat regular this evening. He continues to have diarrhea. Hopefully, that will run its course and be done. I had no idea of the adverse effects.
ReplyDeleteKeep an eye on him and make sure he stays hydrated. If he starts vomiting give him Pedialyte with a syringe in his mouth to replace the list fluids. Food is not as important, he can fast for a couple of days.
DeleteMy geriatric German Shepherd mix took Previcox for months, and never had an issue, but that was not the case with my geriatric Great Dane, as previously mentioned. The site I mentioned, which seems to no longer exist, reported countless reports of dog deaths because of this drug. A common reason for death seemed to be IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia). With IMHA, the bone marrow quits producing red blood cells, and the dog becomes so anemic that he/she can't survive. Merial, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Previcox, will of course never admit that the drug may lead to IMHA. IMHA is a 100% fatal disease if left untreated, and more so if caught in the later stages. "Curing" IMHA is very expensive, will likely involve blood transfusions and giving massive doses of Prednisone to suppress the immune system. Giving mass steroids like that will also guarantee to cause Steroid Induced Cushings Disease. Symptoms will start within mere days of giving the drug. My Dane was on Previcox for a week before I realized what was happening, and I didn't associate it with the drug until it was too late. He went from a happy old dog with some hip pain (common in large/giant breed geriatric dogs), to completely helpless and incontinent, and he was severely emaciated. He couldn't even stand on his own to eat. That said, if your dog starts exhibiting any of the following symptoms, immediately take him/her off of Previcox and get the dog to a vet:
ReplyDelete> Weakness or tiring more easily than normal (lethargy)
> Breathing more rapidly than normal (this was what alerted me!)
> Very pale pink or white gums (if gums are black, check underside of ears)
> A yellow tinge to the gums or the whites of the eyes (happens in the later stages)
> Discolored urine
This is just an update on my Irish Setter that I posted on October 2004th. After 4 days of diarrhea, I took back to the vet. He had lost a pound. The vet gave me famotidine 20mg, sucralfate, metronidazole 250mg, and oral dose diagel. No more diarrhea. We'll see how he does. I will never use previcox again.

I have taken my dog to ER today Oct-24 after discovering Previcox has had severe side effects.
We’re waiting to hear how much organ damage there is and whether they can save his life.
I’m interested to talk to you to learn of anything beneficial to help him while there’s still a chance. If he does lose his life I’d like to help promote your message regarding the danger of this drug.
If you would like to pass on your phone number of Skype address I will call.
I am in New Zealand, I immigrated out here from the US.
Thanks in advance,

The latest update is he now has septic peritonitis. His stomach lining has given out and they’ve found fluid around his intestine. A sample of this fluid was taken and diagnosis is septic peritonitis so he’s been taken to ER for immediate surgery. It doesn’t look good at this point…. it’s prayers from here.
Our situation is we have a young vet who has not been fully aware of the potential severe reactions of the drug. I gave her feedback about lethargy, loss of weight, he stopped eating etc. just 2 days ago but was not told to stop Previcox. All issues were considered arthritis related. I accepted this as he went in for a visit due to an injured leg. At this point the vet found he had arthritis in his spine. So Previcox was given. We thought his deterioration was thru a reduction in exercise (advised to rest the leg). So I kept giving the Previcox hoping to alleviate his suffering.
It was only through my research today and then seeing the color of his urine that I pushed for an immediate visit. Such a shame…
Our guy may or may not pull through but like you we need to get a message out there about this drug.
Thanks for getting the info out there!
Take care,
Chris

Thank you again for your kind words and your caring heart.
We lost our dog on Friday. They tried emergency surgery to save him but the damage was too extensive and inoperable. He was put to sleep before he came around.
We’re both grieving and have decided to go stay in a hotel for 3 days, to get away from the reminders in the house.
We will definitely like to help this cause with your Blog and anywhere else we can. Please rely on us to help with this. Feel free to steer us in this…
Thanks again for your kind words.
Take care,
Chris and Pan
RIP Cody
I started giving my dog Previcox, and after 24 hours he began vomiting. I only gave him three pills over a course of three days, but it was enough to cause acute damage to both his liver and kidneys.
ReplyDeleteMy vet feels terrible for prescribing it to him — he had no idea that he would react so badly to it. He is still at the vet right now as he has been for the last two days, so they can continue IV fluid therapy and monitor him. I think (and hope) he'll be okay, as he is stable now and starting to eat a little again.
I feel terrible for giving him this medication. While it may work for some dogs, it clearly does not for others and has very adverse side effects and fatal to some dogs. The problem is that you don't know how your dog will react to this medication until after you've given it to him/her — and at that point the damage might have already been done. :(
I wrote on here about my Benji being poisoned by Previcox in October of 2013. I refused to put him to sleep and after momths and months of tratments med etc he survived but always had kidney damage and high blood pressure, Well today 11/13/2014 he lost his battle. My heart will forever be broken and my home will never be the same. I was lucky to have him for a year after he was poisoned but Previcox is what killed him. Why are they still giving this drug to dogs?
ReplyDeleteSorry for your loss Nancy.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, the reason they continue to sell Previcox despite its lethal side effects is because they make millions of dollars in profits out of it. And because pets don't have lawyers to sue giant pharma corporations

ReplyDeleteI really wish I would've found this months ago and I would probably still have my dog. She was given Previcox for general aches and pains, she was a Dane coming up on her 8th birthday. She had been on it for about 2 weeks and went from perfectly healthy, happy and active (less the minor aches of getting up usually just in the morning, nothing severe and she was no where near her end) on her last night to the following morning drinking 3 bowls of water as fast as she could get them down and then throwing them up. I took her to the vet immediately but she deteriorated so fast she died on the office floor before she could even be seen. I was too heartbroken at the time to dig into the cause. My 7mo old dane started limping with no signs of injury so I took him in yesterday and he too was given this. It sounded familiar so I double checked and sure enough it was what she was on so I started researching it. My vet has now for the 2nd time not given me any warnings about this. At almost 8yrs I suppose it is likely she could have had a preexisting liver or kidney problem but the vet did not even bother to check before handling this over so willingly. I understand that all drugs can have side effects and unfortunately its often a case of having to pick the lesser of the 2 evils. My choice would never be an untimely death. My puppy will not be taking this and we will not be returning to this vet. This medication can help I'm sure as not everyone experiences the same result but should not be handed out so easily and should require owner education. I'm so angry that my baby girl is gone for no good reason at all
ReplyDeleteMy mother's beloved dog just passed away after being prescribed Previcox for a mild case of arthritis pain. She developed heart and liver problems within a week and rapidly got sicker. We are heart broken. The loss of our little pup- an 8 year old Pomeranian- was the result of this deathly drug. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR DOG TAKE IT. PLEASE
ReplyDeleteThe drug has worked well for us but my Bassett only gets 1/4 tablet a day...there can be dome nasty side effects...please also look into DLPA...my Bassett gets 2 pills (1) in the a.m. and (1) in the evening....about 30 minutes before meals...we tried DLPA after a friend reported a great change in her elderly dog...worked do well for us that we referred it to several friends with elderly dogs and a huge positive notice was seen within 72 hours... Again, that was my experience... Before you give your dog any medication... You owe it to yourself and your dog to weigh the Pros and con's....DPLA can be bought on line or in a vitamin store
ReplyDeleteI am posting a comment about PREVICOX in my sweet Golden Retriever girl Molly's name. She was the happiest, full of life golden retriever and my best friend in the whole world. Molly was using Rimadyl on and off for years due to torn cruciate ligament injuries. Years after the surgery, in July 2014, I inquired with my vet as to if there was any other options for relief of joint pain/arthitis. I regularly took Molly swimming and did warm water therapy to help her naturally with low impact exercise. Our vet recommended my using Previcox for her. I started giving it to her everyday, thinking she was going on 10 years of age and possibly needed it more routinely. I wish I hadn't. In hindsight, she tried to tell us she didn't like that pill. She would spit it out evey time, despite taking all her other meds cooperatively. Looking back she also walked away from her food bowl with food still in it, which was super weird as she LOVED food! She also became more fatigued. I actually went out and bought a different food thinking she was bored with her food! On a Sunday morning she vomited so I took her to the vet Monday for an exam and the vet gave her a pill for nausea. She vomited again that night so I took her back to the vet the very next day. The vet ran bloodwork and immediately told me she was going into "liver failure" and to take her immediately to the emergency animal hospital. Molly was given blood platelet transfusions, anti-toxin drugs, fluids, etc. Molly fought the fight of her life for four days in that hospital with the best doctors and round the clock care. But sadly she went to be with the Lord that Friday. My heart is broken. A enormous piece of me is with her. I can't wait to see her again. I WISH I WOULDN'T HAVE EVER EVER EVER GIVEN HER PREVICOX. I wish I would have done research on this drug. I wish I wouldn't have been so trusting of my vet with suggesting to use that drug. I wish I would have done alot of things different, but I know Molly is now with her big brother Bogey, which is the best image I can have if she can't be with me. God has a plan for everyone and everything. His timing is always perfect. But I will never stop missing my sweet Bogey and Molly. They own my heart and always will.

I gave my mix breed( Boxer and Boston terrier) 3 doses of previcox. He threw up blood for 2 days. I bought pedialite and peopto bismol and kept giving both of them with an injection kitchen syringe ( used for roaste/ sans the needle) for 48 hrs. By the third day I tried a little ground chicken but he threw that up as well. Thank goodness it was green bile instead of blood but he still could not hold food down and was very weak. On the fourth day he was able to drink by himself and I switched him to Pepcid AC and kept pedialite in his water bowl. It is now day five and he is eating ground, boiled chicken and mashed up egg noodles( the rice irritated his stomach) In small amounts 4 times a day. I am giving him a Pepcid with each feeding. He is still not 100% but has some energy now and goes out a couple of times a day now to poop and urinate. It is going to be a long road but I am so grateful I kept him home and took care of him myself. My vet said I was doing as much as they could and the fact that he was at home kept him calmer. Stress when your stomach has been ulcerated is not a good thing. There is no way to tell if any other internal damage may show it's self at some future date but I am grateful he is not in pain. My vet did give me valium for him to reduce his stress when I have to leave the house and that has helped as well.
ReplyDeleteNot all outcomes are good and it breaks my heart. But sometimes you can save your friend if you try. If he had become too dehydrated I would have had the vet put in an IV but I still would have brought him home and administered the fluids my slef. I think not leaving him alone in a strange place may have helped.
My 4 month labrador took previcox for 4days bacause she had foot injury .then she started vomiting excessively about 5 times and diarrhea.I took her to the vet and she gave her zantac and finidiar. now after 4 days she's fine. she plays all the time and her appetite returned.now i worry about if previcox left permenant damage, how will i know? thank you in advance, greetings from greece. keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteYassou!
ReplyDeleteI think she will be ok you don't have to worry
Thank you so much for the speedy reply!!!! kalimera!!!
ReplyDeletei must say im just in shock about it all.my dogs on these ,has been for two weeks.i know that all drugs have risks and not all people have problems with them .but really if i had knew i would nt have started them on my dog.i mean really would you give a drug to your kids that has been banned for coursing death ???? my dogs r my kids to .i will be having words with my vet tomorrow for not warning me.

My dog was prescribed Previcox by my vet as he said it was a safer option than the Rimadyl he was originally prescribed. Riley, who is 3 years old, was diagnosed with severe elbow dysplasia at 7 months old. He was assessed by a very well known surgeon who deemed it was one of the worst cases he had ever come across and that there was nothing that could be done for him (except fusion of joints when the pain became too much). Advised to go away and let him live his life as a 'dog' with no restrictions for as long as he was able. He has been on Previcox for the last 2 years. Just lately he has shown bowel changes and occasional vomiting, off his eating and general lethargy. He also has developed a skin rash. He is seen by a vet every 4 months because of the prescribed medication and I have mentioned his symptoms to him, also questioning long term use of medication. Reading the concerns of others has made me feel sick! I know Riley's lifespan will be shorter than other dogs but we love him and want to keep him happy for as long as possible.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what other options are out there as pain relief is absolutely necessary for him.
Shall be returning to vet and discuss the findings and concerns of other users.
I have a 12 year old English Springer Spaniel with severe bi-lateral hip dysplasia. She has suffered with it for over 5 years. We put her on generic conjointon and Previcox. She takes 1/2 pill of 227 mg Previcox every morning with food every day. The results have been remarkable. At one point she was unable to walk but after giving her Previcox she is living a normal life (just no springing). She has never suffered any gastric issues or seizues. Lucy has an incredible appitite and weighes 50 lbs. Her biggest issue is she has food allegeries and flea allergies. My heart goes out to each person who has struggled with an illness of their loved one. I can only sympathize. For me Previcox has worked wonders for my Springer Spaniel for years with zero side effects. I have a extremely close relationship with my vet and am confident that if there was a better medicine for Lucy he would strongly recommend it and NEVER put her health or life in jeopardy. I can only wish that relationship for every pet owner. God speed.
ReplyDeleteI lost my beautiful little dog on Thursday 26th March. She was a 14yr old healthy girl with arthritis, for which she had a Cartophen injection once a month. My vet gave me 1x227mg tablet,to be cut into 8,and give her 1/8th a day.She had 2 doses a total of 1/4 tablet, started vomiting, and projectile diarrhea on 2nd dose, back to the vet,was given an injection for the vomiting plus a paste to line her stomach. She deteriorated through the night, collapsed next morning, rushed to the vet,she had to be euthanised.I was told it was her kidneys, also she had mouth and throat full of ulcers.I am devastated. My gentle little dog who was still jumping up at the side of my bed,and enjoying her chicken dinner on the day i gave 1st dose, now gone forever,it was a horrible death and I blame myself for giving her the Previcox.I should have checked.3 days from healthy to dead,is an absolute tradgedy.I cry every day,
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear your story. RIP :(
ReplyDeleteThese stories are just horrific. Heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteA half-hour ago I was about 5 minutes from giving my sweet brave 3-year-old mini doxie Previcox. Decided to do some reading up beforehand (as usual). The bottle is sitting here beside me as I type, and as soon as I post this it is going to be in the garbage never having even been opened.
I certainly understand that every dog is different and not all have adverse side effects. I appreciate the views of the vets and pet parents who have had good results with this medication. However my doxie's situation is moderate and there are other options for safer meds and I won't take the risk!!! Thank you so much for posting this, and thank you as well to all the commenters. You may have played a part in saving my little buddy's life. My heart goes out to everyone whose beloved companions either sickened or lost their lives. <3
Hi, just to say that our Labrador has been on Previcox 227mg daily for four years.
ReplyDeleteIt works brilliantly and there are no side effects for him.
I guess what suits one dog may not suit another.
I had a totally different experience with Previcox. My 13-yr old Cairn started limping, with it getting worse over a few days, and so took to the vet. They xrayed and saw nothing was broken, blood work was fine, and prescribed tramadol. Didn't help and woke to find him unable to even stand to go out to bathroom. Seemed in lots of pain, so we expected it possible we may have a hard decision to make at this next visit. The doc prescribed Dasuquin, an otc supplement and previcox. Believe he gave a shot, but can't find bill to see of what. Took him home and gave him pill and by the evening, he was walking and wanting dinner. I have never seen a drug work that quickly before. To us it was a miracle. Our dog went from being unable to stand up even to use the bathroom to bouncing around. He's running around now like his old self, and I have taken him off of it, because I figured what's the point. So sorry for everyone's bad experience here, but for us it was a miracle cure.
ReplyDeleteShould he ever have to get on it again, I will be skeptical because of what I've read here. I had been so impressed I've told people about it. Now I'd feel horrible if anyone gave their dog this drug and it suffered the problems described here. For us it worked.
My vet told me euphemistically that Provicox would "shorten my dog's life"
ReplyDeleteHow's that for euphemistically describing DYING!?
After reading this website, I will certainly not ever give my dog this drug
My vet told me euphemistically that Provicox would "shorten my dog's life"
ReplyDeleteHow's that for covering up the truth
I was given this drug for my 6 year old Boerboel last Thursday, and within 36 hours and only 3 doses, he has terrible lesions on his tongue, his ears are weeping with blood and pus, his hind hock has swollen to twice it's size, and today the vets have put him on steroids and antibiotics in the hope this will kick his immune system back up.
ReplyDeleteThey don't know if it is the previcox, or if it is coincidence, but they called Merial, who don't think the symptoms are related to the drug, but have offered to run a full blood panel and pick up the cost.
All I know is the next 48 hours are critical, and I am preparing myself to say good bye to my dear and beloved friend.
I wish I had found this website before I gave it to him.
Good luck to your doggie, I hope he recovers quickly. Please keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteOk, I am sitting here with a bottle of this stuff for my 53kg Maremma who is 9 and has arthritis. He had a cartrophen injection this morning and the vet said to give this to him if he is in pain, or before a big walk etc.. if I think he is going to be in pain. HE mentioned ulcers but I have taken his advice, and I have the pills. My boy has a 'sensitive' gut these days, having had HGE and being hospitalized for that a couple years ago. I am not going to give these pills to him. Now I am afraid. If I give him one, he may not be here tomorrow - is that what I am gathering from these posts?? I have him on special supplements and natural remedies, like fish oil etc.. I am afraid to give these to him now. Glad I found this.
ReplyDeleteI am so pleased you have decided against giving your dog this drug, my boy will be on steroids for the foreseeable, and I have been warned there is a strong chance of thrombocytopenia occurring again.
ReplyDeleteI have one of my english pointers on yumove, and if and when my boerboel recovers entirely, I will put him on it too.
I just returned this medicine to the vet n I told lady at the desk( don't think she was a vet ) I told her my concerns n about all this horror stories she starts don't believe what u read on the internet n I said hundreds of people are lying or misinforming people about it even the FDA says it's dangerous she was so callous making me out to be an idiot because I don't want my dog to die or be permently damaged I won't be returning to that vet it is my choice what I give to my dog n I'm really pissed they didnt give me any info on the meds then tried to tell me there's nothing wrong with it I hate that it causes all the side effects n this lady tried to make every excuse to support the meds I had to just shut up n leave I was shaking all over I was so upset that she acted like she knew it all n all this stories are just BS I feel so bad for all of u that have lost your babies because my dogs r my babies too I was in tears reading these stories thank you all for sharing I feel like I avoided a horror story that could've happened to my dog my heart goes out to all of you I appreciate the info I found here and the vets should give us something about it n should definitely not keep giving this medicine I do believe these stories unlike the rude know it all I encountered today
ReplyDeleteEmail her a link to this posting and testimonials.
ReplyDeleteAfter 5 days of pervicox for a hurt knee my 3 year old dog small mal-shih is now fighting for his life. He was vomitting, lethargic, and diarrhea. Today it was not diarrhea. To my horror it was all blood. They say he has ulcerative colitis. They say it is not related to previcox but I know better after reading. The doctor told be the risk was nausea, diarrhea, and vomitting. Never did she mention death!! How is this still being given to dogs?
ReplyDeleteYour friend is in my prayers, hope he pulls it through. Please keep us posted
DeleteDON'T give your dog Previcox no matter what your Vet says. Some dogs react immediately and others will become sick in days or even weeks later.
ReplyDeleteSigns of potentially fatal side effects include; increased thirst, restlessness, vacant staring, apparent blindness, i.e. tripping over toys, food and/or water bowls, anything they would normally walk around. Weakness, loss of balance, trying to squeeze into small spaces, i.e. behind the oven, frig, end tables, etc., circling, head rubbing, drooling, especially after eating, heavy breathing, drooling or panting, especially after eating. Sweet or musky smell to breath, sensitivity to touch, i.e. flinching when touched or petted, aggressiveness, i.e. snapping or jerking away from touch. Urinary incontinence, increased frequency but only small output of urine, diarrhea or constipation. ANY signs of any one of these means your dog is in serious trouble. STOP giving Previcox immediately or you will forever be searching for a way to forgive yourself for poisoning your best friend and loyal companion after you've held them as they die.
There are safe herbal choices to give your pet for pain relief from arthritis and joint pain. One choice is Dr. Harvey's Arthro-Aide, another is MSM and Chondroitin found in many supplements such as NU PRO Silver.
PLEASE don't use Previcox. I didn't heed the warnings and I will pick up my beloved baby from the crematorium tomorrow. Please!!!
My sons dog was put on Previcox for arthritis issues. She had only taken it for 9 days, now she is urinating everywhere , going down hill very fast. A few weeks ago she was fine, now the decision is when to have her to put sleep. It's a shame that we and our furbabies are still guinea pigs in this day and age. This is beyond sad
ReplyDeleteThe link below will take you to a site to sign a petition that would require Veterinarians to provide drug information including possible side effects when they dispense any drug to a pet owner. Had I known what the Vet knew but didn't tell me, I could have saved my fur baby before it was too late. Please sign the petition and pass the link on to others who will sign also and get this put into law.

My 4 year old Rottweiler was given Previous 22nd 2 weeks ago for a torn ACL in her leg. I advised the vet she was pregnant and due any day. I did notice that she was walking better. As the days went by she hadn't had puppies. Then she started passing what looked like after birth but never a puppy. I took her to another vet in town and he stated that she showed no signs of having any puppies in her. Well, today she passed a puppy that was dead, not formed but u could clearly tell it was a puppy. U could see its little paw clearly and the rest of it. The only thing we've done different is give her this medication. I decided to pull up info on it and found this site. I honestly believe this medication killed my puppies
ReplyDeleteFirst off I would like to say thank you to all of you for this post and am so forever grateful . my dog came down with a cold .. after sneezing and unfortunately banging his nose on the floor started to have breathing problems.. I went to one vet ... "Well he is old you know" really ... second went to an emergency vet waited for three hours... vet comes in says well we would have to do a scope $3000... or I can send you home with some cough syrup... I left ...third vet decision was to do a nose flush.. due to it being clogged which I still believe is due to him banging his head on the floor... from sneezing.. had that done very nice vet .. did what we could ...but unfortunately the breathing issue came back ..so decided to go to a more local vet just due to time restraints ... and local... guess what he subscribed... yes you got it previcox.. gave him one pill and decided to come on the internet to find out more info about this medication... thank you everyone .... I am so ever grateful for your stories ... thank goodness he has only taken one ... I have been up all night with him.. scared to death ... called the vet this morning ... and will never go back there again... after 4 vets I thought there might be a little bit of hope for my dog ... and yes there will be now .. I have lost total trust in the veterinary society ..to say the least ... my dog is fine ... thank goodness .. thank you everyone here for your outpouring of this awful medication that unfortunately is still on the market today ... After reading 22,000 reports 3000 deaths... that many... don't lie on the internet ... you saved my dogs life today ... thank you !!!!
ReplyDeleteNever give your dog Previcox! Its killed alot of dogs. It has almost killed mine and its still not over. She was perfectly healthy when I took her to the vet for arthritis. 2 weeks after I started her on this medicine she was weak and acting weird. She began drinking alot of water. I started noticing scabs on her behind. She couldnt walk more than a hundred feet and very lethargic. She stopped eating and has lost 10 lbs. I am now having to flush her kidneys twice a day by Iv filled with electrolytes. The uric acid has built in her stomach and caused blood in her stool and she cannot eat. I am absolutely livid with myself and the effen vet. Merial the maker of Previcox has admitted fault by offering me a 1000 dollars towards vet bills. Their are many testimonials on the internet. THIS MEDICINE IS NOT SAFE FOR DOGS!!!! IT IS THE SAME AS VIOXX THAT FDA TOOK OFF THE MARKET AND MARKED NOT SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!!!!! If you have a dog do your research before you trust anyone, even the vet. I feel after this experience much guilt and having a very hard time with my choices. My poor baby is urinating on herself due to all the fluids im giving her to flush out this poison. SHARE IF YOU HAVE A PET PLEASE!!!! $$
ReplyDeleteI am heartbroken. My dogs blood work was fine. She went in for teeth cleaning and have two tumors removed. Previcox was given after surgery, and she came home Fri and on Sunday I rushed her to emergency clinic. She was panting and not acting herself. After thousands of dollars- was told , she was in renal failure. She was a healthy dog- but Vet Specialist hospital stated her kidneys were damaged because of Previcox. Wish I had known more about side effects of Previcox. My pet will not eat - has ulcers in her mouth. She is on IV -
ReplyDeleteI am hopeful and praying she gets better. She is my little friend--and I love her.
I took my 15 year old tenterfield Jade to the vet one and a half days ago as I noticed her right eye looked swollen. I thought I would bring her home with antibiotics and some eye cream. The diagnosis ripped my heart out. Aggressive glaucoma. She also has a heart condition. Her eye is popping out, my poor baby, she's been my best mate and I will do anything to save her. Her eye will need removing, and the hole stitched up. The vet gave her 1 previcox injection and gave me 2 previcox for the weekend. She has deteriorated dramatically, it's like she doesn't know where she is, or who I am. I'm laying on my bed next to her crying my eyes out, and I think I have to have her put to sleep. I don't want to put her thru an operation to cut her eye out. But I don't want her to go. She is almost 16, god it's hard. I can imagine the pain losing a beloved pet to a drug. I'd be out for blood. She's only had 2 doses, it has really kept her pain down, I don't know if it's the glaucoma or the previcox causing her confusion. Got vet appointment in morning. Someone tell me I'm doing right to get her put to sleep. I cannot imagine her gone.
ReplyDeleteMy 10 year old yellow lab died yesterday because of previcox. She was a healthy, strong dog before given this drug. She hurt her knee and had knee surgery TPLO last Tuesday. Everything was going perfect. Unfortunately, month before surgery she was prescribed previcox. We only gave her half a pill a day. Last Saturday night she was vomiting uncontrollably and unresponsive. We brought her to vet and was shown the fluorescent orange fluid that came out if her stomach. She was given fluids and pain meds to keep her comfortable. She only got worse and we had to put her to sleep. She was given an autopsy and we were told an ulcer had perforated her stomach. It was repairable. They sent tissue to drug company and we were told the drug company would be contacting us. We are devastated. She was our everything. She was the best dog.
ReplyDeleteI commented last night on the 10 year old yellow lab. The perforation in her stomach was unrepairable.
ReplyDeleteI lost my beloved companion to Previcox on Feb 26th 2016. It was give to my chocolate lab for minor pain relief after teeth cleaning and a mole on his back. After 4 pills(one a day)I have to take him back to the vet. He could not walk on his own, and had a tar like substance leaking from his bowls. He volitrd, then would eat anything at all. He was staring off in to space and out of it, loosing all of his muscle control. He did not make it through the night. I am beyond devastated. I waitoed o. The vet to open and had an autopsy done. Death by Previcox!!!! This has got to be removed from the market. I had a healthy boy that did not deserve this.
ReplyDeleteLast Friday my sweet 13 year old furbaby was diagnosed with arthritis. She was absolutely healthy otherwise. The vet prescribed Previcox. I gave her a pill on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Sunday I felt like the pill was making her sick. She was lethargic, drinking water, but seemed to lose interest in food Sunday night. Called the vet Monday morning and told them I felt the med was making her sick. I did not give her another pill. They prescribed something to settle her stomach. She had terrible diarrhea during the day on Monday. I gave her the stomach pill and am pretty sure she didn't keep it down long enough to matter Monday night. Tuesday morning she was extremely lethargic and wouldn't get up. I came up from work Tuesday planning to take her to the animal hospital if there was no improvement. I was home about 5 minutes, she raised her head up, put it down and died. I am still in shock. I cannot believe she's gone. Devastated does not even begin to describe what I am. This is a horrible drug and should be taken off the market. My vet in no way told me of the possible side effects and I will certainly not use that vet again.
ReplyDeletePlease help! I knew about Rimadyl but not previcox! Literally makes me ill. I have a 10 yr old that was just started on previcox 3days ago. He was lame and in terrible pain - literally screaming! Went to vet -4 X-rays showed 4 ribs in the shoulder blade area were calcified together where they meet the back bone. Diagnosed with cancer - has a mass over rib cage. He's been on Flexpet for about 3 years and did well, but then it didn't help (4per day). Been on Previcox for 3 days now and is doing better, but now I'm literally terrified!! Don't know what to do!? He gets enzymes as well as I rub DMSO on his leg and between the shoulder blades. I am financially strapped so can't afford a lot of tests or treatments. Is there something you could recommend that would keep him from being another statistic!? What is the ratio of dogs that do well compared to those that lose their lives to this drug?
ReplyDeletePlease help asap!!! I am so very sorry for all the innocent creatures that have lost their lives to this drug!! What alternatives are there?
First adverse symptoms usually manifest within 48 hrs from first dose. Your dog is probably OK with Previcox. Just make sure you keep an eye on him, watch for diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, to much water drinking
DeleteShould I cut the dose to 1/4 tablet? What about Robaxin? A friend recommended that - a muscle relaxant. I'm sure when he's in terrible pain he tenses up. What do you think? Thanks so much for your quick reply. Hoping others will reply with more suggestions. Thanks again, Suzanne
ReplyDeleteKind of surprised you say he should be ok? If this drug kills, why would anyone take that chance? Are you familiar with Robaxin? Couldn't find too much wrong with it. You mentioned 48 hours; yet most of these dogs had been on Previcox much longer? I'm looking for a safer drug to keep him pain free, not playing Russian roulette with his life.
ReplyDeleteMy dog is on previcox. My vet gave my dog a blood and urine test before administering. I looked it up, as I do with any drug, and read all the details, which are on the leaflet in the pack.
ReplyDeleteIt's like ibuprofen. Dog should take it with food and kidneys should be checked first. This isn't a problem with the drug; it's a problem with the advice you had. It's been so much better for my dog than Rimadyl. He's back chasing rabbits at 13.
Sorry for the affected animals, but this is down to the advice you were given. Problems should be reported through the correct channels to be investigated.
Most vets give you a sheet that lists all the possible side effects. You can also ask your vet about the medications they prescribe. All drugs for dogs or humans have risks and side effects. I am sorry for the loss of your very loved pets. My dog took Previcoxx for a week and it did seem to affect his wanting to eat. We have decided not to use the Previcoxx because it cannot be taken with Prednisolone. My lab has hip problems and takes Tramadol(opiod) am and pm. When he has a flare up he takes prednisolone (steroid). He had a really bad flare up a year ago and our vet gave him, in addition to Tramadol, Prednisolone, and Gabapentin. He seemed a little loopy at first, but super happy. It was like a miracle. He only took Gabapentin for a short time, and we always wean him off the Prednisolone after a week or so. Dogs can't tell us when they hurt and they often don't show pain until it's really bad. Please make sure that if your dog needs pain relief, you find something to give them, just don't let them suffer. My dog's personality is dramatically affected by his pain. You will be surprised once you get your dog on a good medication, how they just seem so happy. When the weight of debilitating pain is lifted, it's just wonderful! There are lots of options out there, you just have to find the right one for your pet.
ReplyDeleteAfter long term use, (1) year of Tramadol, my dog died of liver failure from Tramadol. After (4) years on Previcox my other dog lived a happy long life and died of old age. I think Previcox is the better drug given my experience.
ReplyDeleteMy dog is 12 and have been told to give him Previcox because there is a manufacturing problem with PLT that he was doing so well on. He has been on Zitac to line his stomach from getting ulcers from the PLT. He was also on tramadol from Nov 2013 to Oct 2015 but that changed to gabapentin in Nov 2015. So he has been on these three tablets Zitac, PLT and Gabapetin from 2013 and is doing well. I do not want to give him Previcox after reading these posts. Is there anything better out there?
ReplyDeleteMy Labrador of only four years passed away with Previcox. Initially she had a muscle sprain and our Vet proscribed Previcox for twenty days. There were no symptoms for the first 10 days. On day 11 she vomited her meal and I though it was something she ate apart from the meal. On day 12 she had diharrea and she didn't have her breakfast, which is not likely at all for her to skip breakfast! So I took her to the Vet on day 12. He took some blood test and was told that her kidneys and liver were fine. He put her on a drip for 3 hours. The Vet told me to get her back to his clinic in the morning for more tests. When I took her home she couldn't even move at all. This was at 9pm. I called the Vet but there was nothing else to do. at 10.15pm she passed away suffering a heart attack. Please read carefully about Previcox and monitor your dog deeply especially if Previcox is prescribed for more than 3 days!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this post. My dog was given Previcox to treat arthritis and IVDD. She started having bizarre symptoms, similar to a partial seizure, after starting Previxoc, so I rushed her to the prescribing vet. They did not consider that this could be a side effect, rather they suggested giving her Previxoc more frequently for her back pain. Never did they do any blood work to test her liver/kidney levels or give me prescribing information prior to or during her treatment. After a few more weeks of taking it "as needed" she began vomiting and acting very lethargic, so I rushed her to a different vet who checked her kidney levels and they were off the charts. I am so furious with my old vet and with myself for not looking into this sooner. While I concede that this drug is probably helpful to the majority of dogs, it's extremely detrimental to others and owners have a right to know that and weigh their options. I hope she recovers quickly.
ReplyDeleteI have and breed border collies for almost 50 years now. and my old girl who was 12 had arthritis really bad and we had tried the Cartrophin injections which I had also done with 3 other previous dogs of mine but it did not work on any of them, I was given Previcox to try and within a week she was running around and no sign of being in pain with the arthritis, I had her on this for over 2 years and it gave her a new lease of life, She passed away at 14 and 5 months and I am sure the Previcox gave her the extra time, I had also just started my other old dog on Previcox and it also made a great difference, he has been on it for over 2 years now, with no apparent side affects. Without the Previcox I am sure he would not be around still. He is a big dog with heavy bone, he is now almost 13, He would weigh around 25 klg, I am going to cut him back to half a tablet as I have got onto some natural medication which seems to be working as well. I also recommended the Previcox to several other people and their dogs also showed great improvement, I understand what suits one dog may not suit another just the same as human medication, I know never to give more than prescribed, but in all honesty It has given both my dogs extra time. With the warmer weather soon coming, I will take him off the Previcox completely. But in the case with my dogs it has worked and given them extra time as well as a couple of friends who I recommended it to as well. I have no doubt it is not suitable for all dogs reading all these reports has proved that but it did improve and gave my dogs more time and quality of life, but no doubt natural remedies are best.
ReplyDeleteHi. My black Lab mix, Pappa, has been taking previcox 227 for two days now. He has had half a pill the first day and half a pill today. I had to carry him to the Vet, he couldn't walk anymore. He is 20 years and 10 months old!!
ReplyDeleteToday he moved around like nothing was wrong. He is eating and drinking and his excretions are normal. I will skip tomorrow's pill, after reading this and see what happens. November 15th is his 21st birthday and he and I have a date for a hamburger and a beer at our favourite bar and I do not want to lose him before then!
Thank you so much for writing about Previcox.
ReplyDeleteI was just prescribed Previcox by the vet, my dog has been limping for some time. I was seriously considering to go and pick it up at the pharmacy, but I got a wierd feeling and started to google before doing so. A THOUSAND THANKS! Just the possibility that I might have killed my dog with this medication.
I am utterly sorry to read of all your losses.
My 13yr old brown Labrador has just had a massive seizure (2 hours ago) he has been on Previcox for 5 day, never had a seizure before, it lasted about three minutes with frothing at the mouth, rigid body etc, then totally disorientated wanted to walk but walking into things, finally got him back in the house can't stand up without assistance. It's Sunday the vet is closed and 40k away.
ReplyDeleteTrying to get as much fluid into him as possible, my method of putting a splash of milk in water works very well
with Labradors. He is looking much better, but quite distressed and howling.

Two years after losing my Benji to Previcox I decided to do an update. After many weeks of nursing my Benji back to health he had a relapse a year later and passed on November 13, 2014. It was the hardest thing I have ever been through and cried more for him then I've ever cried for any human. It took me a long long time to be able to talk about this without crying. I still cry when I picture him taking his last breath. If your thinking of giving your pet any kind of medication research it first. I learned this lesson the hard way.
ReplyDeleteMy 13-month old rottie went to the vet for a routine spay on Friday January 20, 2017. She was gone within a week. She was given METACAM for pain and it caused ACUTE KIDNEY FAILURE. DO NOT GIVE YOUR ANIMALS THIS MEDICATION. The vet then proceeded to charge me $1,300.00 for tests that they ran.
ReplyDeleteMy rescued 3 yr old Jack Russell has just had xray results and his 2 front legs are deformed, apparently there are breeders in mainly Ireland who breed them like this to make them look cute, his legs look like old fashioned arched table legs. He is in pain with one of them and is being referred. Whilst waiting for the referral the vet has given me Carprieve 20mg tablets, 1/2 twice a day. He drinks qite a lot but no other side effects. Does anyone know anything about these tablets please?
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I was considering Previcox for my 16 year old dog with arthritis and found this post in my search. I am so glad I didn't try it as he is very sensitive to aspirin. I'm so so sorry for the loss of so many wonderful pets. Can't believe this is still on the market!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone on this thread received any kind of settlement or reimbursement from the pharmaceutical company (now apparently Sanofi)? It's still traumatic thinking of my once slightly arthritic Dane deteriorating in the rapid and debilitating manner that he did. I'll never forget how so very thin he was when we finally made the decision. He was suffering, and to me, that was harder to watch that letting him go.
ReplyDeleteMy Cocker Spaniel, Ernie, was prescribed Previcox by our vet. After 6 months, Ernie refused to eat one morning, vomiting and started stumbling. The vet rushed over to the house (Mobile Vet) and recommended that Ernie be euthanized. I think I understand now that this vet knew what he had done to my Ernie.
ReplyDelete@Freddie - Was there a diagnosis? My Dane was diagnosed with IMHA within less than 2 weeks after taking it. Within a week, he was gone. He was a senior with arthritis, but was otherwise in good health beforehand. Wonder why a class action hasn't been filed with so many complaints and DEATHS?!
ReplyDeleteMy dog Timba, a Border Collie started on Previcox when he was 9 years old. He was on it for over 4 years 2 pills every day. He is now 15 years old and still extremely well. It is likely a case of some dogs being allergic to it and some not, as with all medication either for canine or human. We are all different. We only switched to Vitofyllin because after long term use previcox was no longer helping his athritic pain.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that my previous dog did great on it, which is why I requested it for my Dane. Unfortunately, 2 weeks after giving it to my Dane, he was gone - IMHA.
ReplyDeleteI have been giving my dog previcox for a few months. She seemed fine other than developing hearing problems, which I thought was from old age, and holding her head in a slightly tilted position when she walked, like a minor stroke. Then, one morning there was a pool of blackish blood by her mouth and was dead (yesterday morning). I blame myself because I read this stuff and didn't think much of it - statistical anomolies. However, I don't believe that any more. Even the dog knew as she stopped eating them when I gave them to her about one month ago, but to please me, she would eventually eat them after I asked her a few times. - John DuBois, Palmetto Bay, FL.
ReplyDeleteI took Norm to a new vet last week. He is 14. She prescribed the Previcox. He was given one dose and had bloody diahrrea, vomiting and even blood in his urine! So far he has survived this, but who knows the permanent outcome? Anyone have any suggestions of painkillers old dogs can take?
ReplyDelete@Lacey - Very sorry for your loss. Would you mind giving details about what your dog went through physically after given the meds?
ReplyDelete@Lacey356 - My German Shepherd mix did amazing on it, and it was the only thing that remotely helped her pain. However, my Great Dane didn't have the same luck. We lost him 2 weeks later because of it. I think it all depends on the dog and perhaps breeds. Any medicine an animal takes has the potential to kill. The problem with this one is that the pharmaceutical company is denying these deaths, many of which have almost identical symptoms, have anything to do with the drug.
ReplyDeleteMy 7 year old beagle was fit & healthy but pulled a muscle in her shoulder on the 2nd June & was given previcox a half of a 227mg tablet once a day fir 7 days. It stopped the pain but then she stopped eating or wanting to go for a walk. Blood test revealed acute anemia & she was transferred to the veterinary hospital. Her gums were white & her red cell
ReplyDeleteCount was 10 instead of 37. A bone marrow test showed her red cells were being dystroyed in the bone marrow & dispute 4 blood transfusions & lots of medication she sadly passed away last Thursday. The vetenary consultant said he felt sure it was down to previcox although he couldn't prove it. Please do not give this drug to your dog, find an alternative
My active, beautiful, trusting, healthy 11 year old dog was dead within a week of commencing Previcox. Before commencing the drug, a blood test showed that her kidney and liver function were normal. Within days she was urinating a lot, not eating and depressed. She was admitted to the vet surgery with acute renal failure and she died there, days later.
ReplyDeleteI suggest seriously avoiding this drug, unless your dog's quality of life is so poor that you are considering euthanasia without it.
I still feel guilty years later, about giving her this drug and leaving her alone at the veterinary clinic where she died. Your animals trust you to do the right things for them and it's heartbreaking when you don't. I only discovered so many similar stories when my dog had already become sick. Please, beware of Previcox. If you are reading this too late, then I am truly sorry.
Has anyone ever experienced their dog loosing their eyesight from PREVACOX? Can it cause nerve damage to the eyes?
ReplyDeleteOur 12 year old Golden Retriever has recently been prescribed Previcox for osteoarthritis. He took the first tablet two days ago and subsequently had diarrhoea. I decided to do some research and found this site. My heart breaks to read your stories. Needless to say, I won’t be giving Chester any more tablets.
ReplyDelete@Unknown
ReplyDeleteBecause T-Relief is a homeopathic product and not used in western veterinary medicine. I'm glad it worked for you. Very few if any homeopathic products have ever been effective for any of my dogs.
On April 17th, we took our Sophie in for back pain. They gave her a dose of Previcox. She was vomiting within 8 hours and she was lethargic and in kidney failure the next morning by 6:30 am. Yes, Previcox killed my dog. The vet will not even have the decency to discuss it with me. He will not call me back and he would not come out to speak with me when I went back to get her cremains.
ReplyDeleteI would tell everyone not to give previcox....my 12 year old puppy had xray and we found out she has both elbow arthritis and a trapped nerve in her neck and sciatica.. She came off metcam and went onto previcox...I didn't check the side effects we did 3 months of her disorientated her ankles giving out panting not eating shaking and basically lying in the same spot everyday...she is now off the drug and a week later solo happy and yes a little limpy from the arthritis but back to normal...avoid avoid...BTW anyone feeding tumeric you must add olive oil and crushed black Pepper and make into a paste the oil and the pepper helps the tumeric work to its full potential xxx good luck everyone also feed raw and add trace vitamins and minerals...can not believe I was so lucky with my doggy and I have her back to normal now...what an awful drug previcox it x
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see if my comment gets published. Previcox works for my dog. It has been working for 2.5 years. My caution is to make sure that you are using the minimum dose needed and do everything you can to stop your dog jumping, standing to beg, and running fast. My dog now has its own lounge with a stairway of firm cushions to get on the lounge. My dog is now 12.5 years old. When Previcox is no longer works at any dosage I will put my dog down. Every dog is different. I have gone to the trouble of making this comment to present another side of the picture. Be very careful which vets you trust for your dog, be very careful which doctors you trust for yourself and NEVER trust a blogger on anything.
ReplyDeleteWell, surprise!
ReplyDeleteI published you comment.
If you'd bothered to read the comments before making allegations of censorship, you would have seen other people posted positive reviews about this drug before you
Previcox has killed my dog also.
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely devastated.
I received his medical records yesterday morning, and upon going through them I now realise that his symptoms only began after taking this vile drug.
He was given Previcox after both his cruciate ligaments were torn and after much hydrotherapy it was decided to help him manage the pain as he was suffering back pain also from the cruciate damage.
He started Previcox in October 2017. In December 2017 he suffered diarrhoea and vomiting and it was diagnosed as acute gastroenteritis. He was given antibiotics and told to stop taking the Previcox until he got back to normal. Bloods were taken and his UREA and AKLP levels were high, but the Previcox was not advised to stop being taken. Of course he did get back to normal, but I now realise this is because I stopped the Previcox. Re-started the Previcox after his 'illness'. April 2018, he suffered his first ever grand mal seizure whilst also being diagnosed, again, as having gastroenteritis. Meanwhile his bloods were being taken every 3 months to check the levels because of taking Previcox. It was mentioned that his urea levels were high, but they didn't seem to have too much cause for concern over this as he was an elderly dog. (Cairn Terrier, 14 years old I failed to add). Same as before, more antibiotics for the 'Gastroenteritis' and they did offer skull xrays amongst other tests, but I declined as I couldn't see any behavioural changes and I thought it was unlikely it was anything to do with his brain. He was twitching a lot daily, and he seemed to be not so happy in life, but I put this down to pain and generally getting older. HOW WRONG I WAS!
He suffered 2 seizures in a week again a couple of months later.
3 weeks ago he started vomiting and had the occasional diarrohea. They diagnosed yet again, suspected 'Gastroenteritis'. More antibiotics and pardale given and told to stop the Previcox.
It was too late.
Sunday just gone, he suffered two Grand Mal seizures within 10 hours. I refused to let my dog suffer anymore. I had to make the hardest decision of my life and have him put to sleep.
I looked at his bloods that were done Friday before, and his liver enzyme levels were hugely raised, along with SDMA, UREA amongst others were high.
I cannot stress highly enough to ANYONE who is about to give their dog Previcox. DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG THIS DRUG! IT KILLS!
I feel so guilty for not realising this and I have failed my poor dog. He didn't deserve to die that way.
I agree, Previcox also the reason why we end up in pet cremation seattle wa of my pet Banjo, I do not understand why we end up like that, we all know that he is sick that's why he's taking up medication and even our vet can't explain to the complications happening to my Banjo.
ReplyDeleteI gave my 5yr old great Dane cross 2 doses of this medication and noticed that her poo was black so I stopped giving it to her. I also noticed that it had not worked to reduce her pain. Having just found this blog I am very happy I stopped when I did!!!
ReplyDeleteI gave this to my 8 year labrador. He was on it for only a month and a half. Having read all the side affects now from this awful pill, if I'd known what it would do to my dog , i would of never had given it to him. Jaundice, liver damage , off his food and lots more. Sadly i had to put my dog to sleep this morning because of these side effects.
ReplyDeleteHi, i was the proud dad of a 11 year old chocolate labrador. He was diagnosed with a large testical and we were advised to remove it and have it sent for testing in the lab. Was prescribed Previcox a couple days pre opp. He had both testicals removed and i was told to continue the Previcox. I stupidly did not look up the side effects and continued to administer post opp. My boy had diarrhoea about 3 or 4 days after taking Previcox. He was drinking loads was dissy and seemed nausious. I stopped the Previcox and he seemed to be getting better so i thought. Unfortunately a couple days later he just led on the floor all day shallow panting. Would not eat. He drank loads of water but shortly after vomited it back up. I can only describe it as a blackish brown slimy substance that looked like coffee granules. We lifted him into the car as he was unable to get up. 1 thing i would like to point out during this whole ordeal his cheeks and his back feet were icy cold and his breathing had become laboured and he was drooling. The vet ran his blood and said he was slightly anemic but not enough to warrent a blood transfusion. The vet gave him 3 injections at 8pm. Tralieve 50MG/ML injection, Prevomax 10MG/ML inj dog Ranitidine Vial 2MLS and sent home still unable to walk or breath properly. Around 2 hour later he was having problems keeping his head up and looked distressed and his breathing became very laboured his head was forward and his front elbows appart. I started to Google and then noticed he became very still i checked his eye lids and his gums they were white. I started cpr as i could clearly feel his heart beat. At the same time calling the emergency oncall vet. He responded slightly to the cpr when i breathed into his nose but unfortunately passed away 10 minutes before the vet arrived. He had a large amount of blood run from his mouth. To recap my dog was on Previcox for around 4 days and prescribed dose as per the vets recomendation. Sadlyd died im my arms while performing cpr i assume he developed stomach ulcers 'Gastroenteritis' possibly had other organ failures as a result of that horrible Previcox. He was cremated and the next day and i collect his remains in a box that i have placed in my front room. I had his soal mate checked over today and she has a urinary tract infection and inner ear infection which the vet gave me a course of antibiotics and ear drops for her ears. I was then asked if i had any Previcox left over from my baby boy to which i said yes and was told to give her 1 every day for the next 6 days. I was about to admisiter the Previcox but decided to Google and stumbled on this blog to which i owe her life. The Previcox has been flushed down the loo. Thank you so much for this site..... sad and gutted for anyone that has lost a loving pet/family member due to the disgusting Previcox. This drug has done more damage to people and there loving pets than good it needs to be removed from the market. Love and hugs to all owners that have lost or are currently trying to save there loved ones. xxx
