It's Alive! First start of my Toyota 4Runner with Mercedes OM617 Turbo Diesel Engine

This is a video of the first engine start of my Toyota 4Runner equipped with a Mercedes OM617 (5cyl) turbo diesel engine.
There is still some work to do until the car is drivable but if Mr.Wrench Wizard (the guy in red shirt) keeps his promises hopefully it will be ready to drive within the next two weeks.

Why put a Mercedes diesel in a Toyota 4X4?
The number one reason is to improve the gas mileage from 12-14 mpg with the original Toyota 4cyl. gasoline engine to 24-28 mpg (with the Mercedes 5cyl. turbo diesel). The second reason is the extended range: from 275 miles to 400 miles before visiting a gas station. The third reason is reliability: the Mercedes OM617 is considered to be the simplest, most reliable diesel engine ever built. With proper maintenance these engines will usually run 500,000 miles between overhauls - and this is not something uncommon.

When ready, this truck will be the perfect hunting (or zombie apocalypse) rig ;)

Obama's Order To Kill, Not Capture: Dead Men Don't Talk

This order to kill not capture reminds me of a very personal episode from my life.
In 1989 the Ceausescu couple was caught and executed by firing squad after a so-called "trial" that lasted 4o minutes, sentencing and execution included. No witnesses were allowed and no public was present.
It was a mocking of justice and I remember even the lawyer they had appointed by the so called "court" started his plea by accusing them of genocide. Don't get me wrong, they were guilty as hell and even more, me and my 22 million countrymen rejoiced and celebrated in the streets like Americans when Bin Laden was killed - the only difference was Ceausescu secret police who didn't believed their boss was dead were still shooting at us from the rooftops.
At the moment and considering the circumstances everybody was happy to see the evil midget and his mad genius wife (that's what we use to call them) riddled with bullets. But on that Christmas Day in 1989 justice was NOT served, and least we knew - we paid dearly and 22 years later we're still paying because of it.

Turned out the people who ordered the quick execution were second in line communists posing as "revolutionaries" and used the popular uprising as a coup d'etat to grab the power for themselves. This is why while in all other Eastern European countries the revolutions of 1989 ended up by bringing to power true democratic anti-communist regimes, it took Romania another 15 years and 3 election cycles to get rid of the corrupt regime of communist apparatchiks turned "capitalists". And 22 years later, it is still not over; today they still form the largest opposition Party, have a hold on huge chunks of the Romanian economy and corrupt everything they touch. Kind of like the George Soros Democrats in the US.

I forgot to mention the Ceausescu couple personal Swiss bank accounts holding an estimated $400 million US Dollars he made from depositing gold, skimming payments for exported goods and selling ethnic Germans from Transylvania to the German government were never found. Amazing coincidence though, a couple of very important characters who used to be in Ceausescu's entourage but during the revolution turned on him and were instrumental in his quick execution became very successful business people in less than months after Ceausescu's demise. They purchased hotels, steel mills, pharmaceutical companies, merchant ships, thousands of acres of farm land, newspapers and TV stations - everything they could lay their hands on during the privatization of the formerly socialist economy, they purchased with cash and today they are very important politicians and power players in Bucharest.
Quite amazing feat for people who before Ceausescu's demise were living on the equivalent of $200/month government employee salaries.

So please excuse my doubts when I say Obama's order to kill not capture smells fishy to me. You don't order the outright assassination of a man who holds so many secrets that can be vital to the security of your country when you have a good opportunity to capture him - unless you have your own secrets related to that man and want him to be silent.

My blood is boiling with anger because this strikes me at a very personal level.

As many of you may already know, I was born and raised in communist Romania. During my military service I spent two Easter holidays aboard my ship, a submarine hunting frigate based in the Constanta harbor. For us conscripts the Easter Holidays were supposed to be joyful and plentiful because lots of parents, sisters and brothers were coming to visit us bringing with them traditional Romanian Easter food: roast lamb meat, drob (a meatloaf made from lamb liver and heart) sweet bread and of course the red dyed eggs and candles to for us to light up at midnight on Easter day as it is customary in our religion.

At the time the food served to the service members in the Romanian Navy was consisting of beans, rice, potatoes and pork fat, seven days a week. US Navy service members would probably go on general strike after eating stuff like that non stop for a month; but we ate it for two years and somehow managed to make it through without going nuts. So keep that in mind when I tell you our politruc (the Communist Party political kommissar in charge of the ship) was personally inspecting each bag, box or plate with Easter fare brought by the visiting relatives and was ordering crew members to peel off the red dyed egg shells and throw them and the Easter candles away before coming aboard. Not obeying his order was costing a the offending sailor a week in the slammer with nothing to subsist on but rye bread and water; but we still managed to smuggle intact eggs and candles aboard the ship using the unit courier bag.

You see, in his tiny communist brain, the red Easter eggs - which in Romanian Christian Orthodox tradition are symbolizing the blood spilled by Jesus on the cross, were a threat to the communist state security. We soldiers were not supposed to believe in any "Christian superstitions"; our blind faith and unquestioned obedience was to be unconditionally given only to the communist State and to the supreme commander, comrade Nicolae Ceausescu.

A couple of years later after I married, my wife told me the same thing was happening at her workplace - the Bank Of Savings (the one and only bank in Romania at the time). During Easter holidays, the politruc in charge of the branch she was working for was inspecting the lunch boxes of each employee hunting for the trouble making red dyed egg shells, exactly like the political officer on my ship.

Clearly, the separation line between the American liberal-democrats and the full fledged communist apparatchiks of the Soviet era is becoming blurrier and blurrier.

George: Sept 29th 2000 - Feb 14th 2011

Please lit a candle for George tonight.

I don't know how to begin...two days ago at 4:25 PM my faithful co-pilot who brushed with death three times before and was tougher and more resilient than a Soviet soldier crossed over. The last mission we gave him was to meet and tell Once and Taz how much we love and miss them.
I'm crying. Sorry, time out.
He passed on the back seat of our old Mercedes, his favorite place in the entire world. Whenever it was not too hot outside I took him with me in the car from morning till afternoon while driving on business. Sitting in the back and putting his head on the armrest waiting for an ear scratch while I was driving - we always said he was our co-pilot or navigator. He liked it there so much that sometimes we parked the car downstairs in the garage and let him sleep there for hours. Then when we considered it was time to take him out of the car and into the apartment, he wouldn't budge - growling in protest and refusing to stand up. That was HIS place, and that's where I put him to sleep - the vet was kind enough to step out of the office and give him the shot right there in George's car, on his seat.
We won't enter too may details why we lost our big gentle (formerly crazy) boy. What initially was believed to be a spleen cancer after an ultrasound examination earlier today it proved to be a huge liver tumor. Both vets - the one who we used for years and the specialist reached the same conclusion: if we try to remove it he would probably die in surgery and if by some miracle he wouldn't the life expectancy would have been 1-2, maybe 3 weeks. They both agreed it surgery would have been useless.
So with heavy heart we decided to let him go. It is painful for us (you all know from your own losses) but it was better for George. He was 10 years, three months old. Half of his life abused and chained in the backyard by an idiot who didn't even wanted to say goodbye and pat him on the head when he surrendered him to us. My God, how bad was George stinking that New Year evening, we drove back home with all windows in the car open. Then, over the last five years lived with us he managed to overcome his antisocial behavior, to beat his twice-a-week epileptic seizures, to accept and respect our sweet Once as the pack leader, to survive a jump from the second floor or a mountain cabin, two amputations front and back legs in one year because of toe cancer and a prescription medication poisoning that was so violent and ugly for 10 days we thought there was no way he was gonna pull it over. Yet he did it, every time - like the legendary Soviet soldier from my wife's granddad story: under enemy machine gun fire, submerged under water with a cigarette lit in the corner of the mouth and still advancing toward the enemy positions. That kind of dog was George - nothing could stop him. Not even a closed door - you'll have to see the round door knob from the inside of our front door. When we moved in the door knob was round and shiny; now the metal is chewed and has craters in it like the surface of the moon; that's because George was trying to get through the door and be with me, his God - as my wife would say.
Crying time out again.
I don't know what else we can say. He never was intended to be our dog but we took him anyway because we believed if we didn't he would be put to sleep. Little by little he made room for himself in our hearts (at 133 lb he was a big dog, the Giantest Giant we ever saw so he needed lots of room) and when he left he also left us with that big empty space.
It is past 7 PM and about now it was time to take Georgie out for a walk. Sometimes I had to work late in the evening preparing for the next day of business and I was considering the evening walk with George as a chore interrupting me from finishing what I had to do. Now I realize how much I was mistaken. I already miss seeing George waiting at the door, jumping and grabbing the the leash in his mouth and telling me with his eyes "let's go already, what are you waiting for?"
My wife is with me on the phone right now as I'm writing. She's driving home from school and she just asked me "the house feels empty, isn't it?".
From my desk seat I look down on the floor at my feet and George isn't there anymore. The house is empty indeed. I'm going to lit a candle again.

This is a movie based on the true story of a true Romanian legend: Ion Gavrilă Ogoranu (1923-2006)

Born in a Romanian family in the Fagaras County, he studied at Radu Negru high school in Fagaras then enrolled in two colleges: the Agronomy College in Cluj and the Academy of Economic sudies in Brasov.

He joined the Romanian Armed Forces in the famed 12th Brigade Mountain Hunters (participating in the on the western front campaign against Nazi Germany). He also enrolled at the Military Academy in Campulung.

He started his career as an anti-communist fighter while still in college. For a decade he was the leader of the "Fagaras" group of partisan (haiduci) fighters.

In the old days Clint Eastwood's character Dirty Harry used to dispatch the bad guys with a .44 Magnum who according to him was the "most powerful handgun in the world"

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

In his movie "Faster" Dwayne Johnson is using the Ruger Alaskan .454 Casull revolver. Although it may look a little less impressive than Eastwood's .44 Magnum due to a much shorter barrel (only 2 1/2 in.), the truth is Dwayne's gun is twice as powerful.

Indeed, the muzzle energy of a .454 Casull round can reach over 2,000 ft.-lb while a .44 Magnum is somewhere around 1,200 ft.-lb. As for the noise blasting out of that snubbie barrel...if the bullet doesn't hit the bad guy, the blast alone make his ears bleed and wet his pants.

The Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull is indeed a beast of a gun and it looks vaguely familiar to me.
Hmm...I wonder where did I see one? ;)

I'm ending this entry with an advice: don't pick this gun if it's your first time at the range and you just want to learn how to shoot. It may be the last time you'll ever touch a firearm.

Job hunters turned out in the hundreds to fill recently-vacant positions at Pro's Ranch Market stores, where a federal audit led to the firing of some 300 workers.

Roxanne Nieves, one of the many that came out in search of a job, said she came to apply after she heard about the layoffs.

"We heard they are firing a lot of illegal people, so we're here to apply," she said.

Nonetheless, she and many others felt guilty about taking the jobs of the people who had just been fired.

"To me, it's pretty hard to see everybody losing jobs," one job hunter said.

About 300 of the 1,500 total employees at the six Phoenix supermarkets were let go this week after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement audit found them to be working illegally.

Attorney Julie Pace said the company has I-9 forms on everyone and uses E-Verify to check employees' eligibility to work, but that is not always enough.

"The company wouldn't know if someone is using counterfeit documents," Pace said.

Pace also called on the federal government to help companies comply with hiring laws.

"We need an easy program for employers to use to hire people -- safe, easy, quick -- so we don't have to deal with ICE audits," she said.

Pro's Ranch Market is among some 1,600 U.S. businesses, including 84 in Arizona, that have undergone ICE audits since July 2009.

ICE says the goal is to reduce demand for illegal employment and protect job opportunities for the nation's lawful workforce.

Some 6,000 NASA contractors face job loss in Obama overhaul

As NASA released more details Thursday about its restructuring under President Barack Obama's space proposal, the director of Johnson Space Center expressed optimism and concern.

Though he welcomed the proposed addition of a five-year, $6 billion technology development program at the Clear Lake-area space center, director Mike Coats said he is concerned about job losses and not having a space vehicle to fly.

“We have some challenges to confront here,” Coats said.

One of the big ones: Even contractors who will get jobs in the restructuring might find themselves out of work for up to a year as the new plans are being formulated.

Since Obama released his proposed budget two months ago for the space agency, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden has been working to revamp the agency.

For Houston, the most significant change was the outright cancellation of the $108 billion Constellation Program, managed at Johnson Space Center, which was to develop rockets and space vehicles to carry astronauts to orbit, the moon and beyond.

That cancellation came atop the planned end to the 29-year-old space shuttle program later this year.

About 1,500 civil servants work on the two programs, and those jobs are safe. But there are as many as 6,000 contractor positions in the Houston area associated with the shuttle and Constellation.

Little seen in the English-speaking world outside the festival circuit, this short but potent Romanian feature is old-fashioned, even quaintly dated, but that's a strength, not a weakness. Writer-director Malaele, making his first film, is a revered comedian and theatre director in his homeland and there's an intensely theatrical quality to the way he tells his fable-like story: we're reminded of pantomime or the allegories of travelling players (a troupe of whom appear in the film) and as in all the best theatre, comedy and tragedy exist side by side.

The story, tellingly remembered for a present-day documentary crew who never really get it, is set in 1953 in a small village - a backwater of Soviet-ruled Romania untouched by electricity or internal combustion. Malaele delicately assembles a portrait of the gruff but loving relations between the unkempt villagers in a series of sequences that seem to channel everything from commedia dell'arte through silent-era slapstick to Pier Paolo Pasolini.

The very public amorous exertions of a young couple are causing strife between their respective families until they soothe the troubled waters by announcing their decision to wed. But just as the village is sitting down to the nuptials, a hatchet-faced Russian soldier arrives: the sudden death of "the leader of all peoples" Josef Stalin has ushered in a week of national mourning and all celebration is banned.

There's a clue to how the village deals with this in the title, but nothing quite prepares us for what follows. It's worth warning that the film moves sharply from the goofy to the grim, but the director's command of these emotional shifts is confident and assured. The film has the feel of a folk tale that is dealing with a dark episode in the national history and stylistically it's more traditional than innovative. But there's great skill on display, from a large ensemble cast and from a director who knows much about visual storytelling: the arrival of a circus in town has an eerie, Felliniesque quality and a 60-second montage that depicts the wedding preparations is the work of a maestro. Recommended.

Truth is the people like Moford and the Bradyites who hate guns are right. I see their point when they talk about feeling "scared and uneasy" (as a liberal wrote in the comments to the article) when when they go in a coffee shop and see people who are showing their guns.

I too feel "scared and uneasy" when I go into a coffee shop and see black people or latinos sitting at the tables and minding their cup of Joe. Sure I agree, the overwhelming majority of them are not murderers, rapists and child molesters but since statistics are showing 85% of the prison population in the US is black or hispanic, why risk going in a coffee shop and get killed by one of them?

Dear Mr. Moford: since you seem to consider all gun owners as being potential murderers and gangbangers, maybe in the future you should consider writing a similar piece about blacks and hispanics. Oh, and gays. Since they represent over 80% of the people infected, gay people can kill you with AIDS. And just like with gun owners who scare the shit out of you only by being present in the same room you are, gay people can give you AIDS only by breathing the same air as you do. You see Mr. Mofo, gays just like the gun owners you hate so much have a lifestyle and values different than yours, Mr. Moford so... they must be dangerous, right?

A fourth grade New Dorp boy faced the prospect of suspension after the principal at his South Beach school saw him playing with an action figure carrying a toy machine gun.

Patrick Timoney, a 9-year-old student at PS 52, and friends were playing with LEGOs during their lunch period when the principal took him into her office over the two-inch toy gun carried by a standard policeman figure.

Margie Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, told the Staten Island Advance that there is a no-tolerance policy for toy guns in schools.

Therefore the principal, Evelyn Matroianni, deemed the pinky-sized toy gun suspension-worthy. Matroianni told Laura Timoney, the boy’s mother, that she would check with a DOE security administrator.

But Ms. Timoney told the Advance that the DOE administrator said no other action was necessary after the toy gun is confiscated and returned to the parents at the end of the day.

According to Ms. Timoney, while another child had an action figure holding an ax, her son was the only one to be approached by the principal.

"It's crazy," Ms. Timoney told the Advance, "He's missing class time, all for silly toys. The boys are just trying to relax. If there's a real threat, why not call the Police Department?"

City Of Oakland Wants To Ban Guns And Ammo Sales; Calguns Foundations Fires Back

Because they have too much time in their hands and a burning desire to take feel good but useless measures to reduce the number of murders perpetrated by gangs within city limits (over 600 last year), the Oakland City Council voted to pass a city ordinance prohibiting the sales of firearms and ammunition to law abiding citizens within city limits.

Never mind there is not a single firearms or ammunition dealer open for business in Oakland (yep, that's right - their number is zero) ; never mind the drug gangs responsible for the murders don't buy their guns and ammo in gun stores but out on the streets. And never mind regulating out of existence gun stores that don't exist in the first place will not inconvenience hardened criminals.
All these arguments are such insignificant details for the geniuses who voted for the ban measure; you see, the most important thing is to show their constituents they are doing something - no matter how useless and laughable about the out of control violence making their city the murder capital of the U.S.

But the California gun owners are fighting back. And who would have thought? California, long regarded as a lost cause because of the most restrictive gun laws passed an imposed over the years against its law abiding citizens is nowadays on the forefront of the fight to restore the Second Amendment rights for the entire country. These days a grassroots organization of gun rights enthusiasts formed around the hugely popular Internet forum Calguns.com is spearheading the counterattack. The name of the organization: The Calguns Foundation.

Here is a news report of what happened at the Oakland City Council meeting. Please note the reporter is mentioning the possibility of Calguns Foundation suing the City of Oakland.

And here is the MUST READ official letter sent by the Calguns Foundation to the City Council, threatening with a million dollar lawsuit if the Councilmembers are voting to pass the ordinance with a second vote on February 16th.

Will the Oakland City Council members come to their senses and vote down the measure? Or will they follow the example of the Mayor of San Francisco who persisted into trampling on the Second Amendment rights at a cost of millions of dollars paid by the tax money of its constituents?

I started eating at Claim Jumper when I was still small enough to stand on the scale. I brought my date to the Laguna Hills location for Junior Prom back in 1985, and I'd take my mother to the Mission Viejo location whenever I visited. Here in Arizona, I was thrilled when you opened the Phoenix and then the Avondale location. I live half-way between the two and frequent both.

I brought my party to the Phoenix location last night for a celebration and was greeted by a large "No Firearms" sign on the door. I absolutely support your right to prohibit law-abiding citizens from carrying a firearm on your premises. I am happy for your success, as in these difficult economic times, you must be doing very well indeed to spit in the faces of such a large section of your market. My friends and I, we vote with our wallets, and will patronize those establishments that respect our right to self-defense. We also network. I will be relating my experiences on several mailing lists and discussion forums. I figure a thousand people will know by lunch time, and 10,000 by dinner. Or maybe they already know and I'm the slow one.

Just in case you wondered why some Islamic officials or heads of state don't wear neck ties, here is an explanation from the horse's mouth...err...the Islamic Center Of Beverly Hills website (yes, you read that right: Beverly Hills)

A few historical points: Crusaders in the 13th and 14th century were attacking Muslims and wanted to conquer Jerusalem. Their clothing was made of armor with a big cross over their chest. Later on, the cross became smaller and slowly changed to a white shirt and cravatt (neck tie). This resembles the cross and has become the symbol of western civilization, western domination, and capitalism.

When the Ottomon Empire (Islamic Empire) was defeated in this century by the West, the first thing the West did after dividing the country was to remove the Hejab from the women and take the turban and aba from the men. In Iran and Turkey, the popet government soldiers beat women with Hejab and men with aba. The West then started to make fun of our Eastern clothing and Hollywood started to promote the neck tie and jacket as a symbol of civilization and success. The West also started bringing liquor, gambling, night clubs and prostitution to the Eastern countries.

The West looked at the East as an army that has been defeated. They were not allowed to wear their own uniform and instead must wear the uniform of the conquerors and give up their own identity.

In the United States now, we must slowly go forward to gain our religious identity and start wearing Sunnah and promoting it to our youth so they will be proud of their Islamic identity. We cannot expect our women to wear Hejab when we do not wear aba and instead, wear a cross (neck tie) around our neck.

1. Do not wear a cross (neck tie) around your neck and please explain that to other Muslims.

2. Always have Tasbih in your hand to show your Islamic pride.

3. Keep your hair short.

4. Wear an Islamic hat (Kofi) whenever possible.

5. Grow your beard (2-3 inches long) if you can.

6. Wear aba over your jacket whenever you can especially when going to Islamic events or to the mosque.

7. Be modest; no silk, no gold, wear nice, clean and inexpensive clothing.

8. Our women should wear long, loose, nice, clean clothing with Hejab (head cover) just like Khadijeh and Fatimah (R.A.).

As a soldier in the army of God in America promoting Islam, this is our uniform, our leader is Prophet (PBUH) and our constitution is preserved in the Holy Quran.

That's it, folks! For the "soldiers of Allah in America" as they call themselves, the true Constitution is the Qu'ran. Stupid me, I always thought it was the Constitution adopted in 1787, the one all immigrants - including the Muslim ones swear allegiance to when they take US citizenship. As for the necktie = cross = infidel symbol = haram.

WARNING for dog owners: Arthritis Pain Drug "PREVICOX" KILLS.

George my 9 year old rescued Giant Schnauzer is now fighting for his life. He was prescribed Previcox by his vet for his arthritis pains. Following the vet recommendation I administered the tablets with food. After only two days and two tablets he started projectile vomiting, drinking a lot of water, being dizzy and manifesting all the symptoms of poisoning.

I Googled the name of the drug "Previcox" and "side effects" and I wish I would have done it BEFORE giving giving George the drug. To my astonishment, there are hundreds and hundreds of personal testimonies written by people who administered their dogs the same drug, their pets manifested exactly the same symptoms like my George and finally, had their dogs ending up dead or barely escaped death with irreversibly damaged stomachs, liver, kidney or hearts.

From an article published in 2006:

"The FDA has released information concerning non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pets -- including Metacam, Deramaxx, Previcox and Rimadyl -- that shows they have been connected to 22,000 cases of illness in dogs, almost 3,000 of which were fatal."

What causes death by Previcox? Acording to one of the hundreds of testimonies I found on the Internet written by a dog owner who lost his pet to Previcox poisoning,

"The Previcox apparently starts first by forming ulcers on the stomach and as more Previcox is administered it becomes ulcer upon ulcer until the stomach acids (full of Previcox) begin to leak out. It seams it first attacks the kidneys and liver. Then it begins to destroy all the protective membranes that are protecting all of the other organs. In the end it makes its final attack on the heart."

Previcox is the veterinary version of the Vioxx (prescribed for arthritis in humans) and it is made by Merial which is a branch of Merck. As you may already know, Vioxx was pulled off the market by the FDA after thousands of people ended up dead after taking the drug. Yet, the same company continues to push Previcox which has the same risks and causes deaths in animals.

George vomited for the third time today and he is very weak, shaking...refused the yogurt but my wife cooked a little beef and carrot soup and gave it to him a few minutes ago, licked the bowl. We expect he will vomit it shortly but that's all we can do until tomorrow morning. We put plastic bags all over the bedroom floor, makes it easier to clean. We'll see what happens until tomorrow when the vet office opens.
I am royally pissed on the vet who did not warned me about the potential side effects and on the company who makes and pushes such a dangerous drug which is banned for humans; if George dies, I'll make taking this drug off the market one of my life goals. I just learned another side effect is extreme aggression (probably caused by pain) and read about a little girl disfigured by a dog who was given Previcox. Dog owners need to know what the risks associated with this drug are. I will start a website and put all the effort and Internet knowledge I am capable of to make it pop on top of every Google search when people are searching the name of this drug.

Traffic Accident, Moving - Blogging Will Be Light For The Next Couple Of Days

I am moving to a new residence this Saturday...and if this wasn't too much of a hassle already, today at 2:00 PM I got involved in a car accident. A guy in a $300, 1981 Toyota pick-up (the favorite work truck of Mexican landscape entrepreneurs here in California ;) lost the brakes and run the red light. I hit him in the front right side of his car, his truck did a 360 and my 2003 Saturn Vue looks like it is totaled. Front left corner of the engine compartment is totally wrecked, both doors on the driver side are cracked (Saturn uses plastic body panels), the left front door which is on the opposite of the point of impact creaks when it opens, so in all probability the car frame is twisted.
Now I don't have a car and I will have to wait for the verdict of the insurance claims adjuster guy in order to make the decision to buy a new one or wait until my Saturn is repaired (by the way it looks I doubt it can be fixed for the amount it is worth).
Just the kind if thing I needed but still, thank God nobody got hurt badly.
I will be back in a couple of days.

In a church situated in one of Moscow's suburbs predominantly inhabited by Muslim immigrants, a masked gunman opens fire. His target is the Christian Orthodox priest, Father Daniel Sysoev.

The two priests were offering communion to the people in the community they were serving. The regent Father Vladimir Strelbițky was wounded and the priest, Father Daniel Sysoev was shot in the head and died while being transported to the hospital.

A Moscow Patriarchate official called Father Sysoyev a “talented missionary” whose work among Muslims, including Tatars, might have been the motive for the shooting.

“I don’t exclude that the murder is connected to the fact that he preached among and baptized those who belong to Muslim culture,” the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk with the news media, said in a telephone interview.

Father Sysoyev had spoken out in opposition to Islam and had warned Russian women against marrying Muslim men.

Anatoly Bagmet, an official of the prosecutor’s office, said there was reason to believe that the shooting took place “on religious grounds,” the news agency reported.

Father Sysoev era was born on January 12,1974. He was active as a preacher of the Christian Orthodox faith, a missionary and a healer. șAs of late, father Sysoev received repeated death threats for his work as a servant of God. He leaves behind a wife, three children and a flock of faithful Christians who are still stunned and saddened by this act of violence.

We write in our personal capacity as individuals who are friends and allies of the United States as well as committed Europeans.

Our nations are deeply indebted to the United States. Many of us know firsthand how important your support for our freedom and independence was during the dark cold-war years. US engagement and support was essential for the success of our democratic transitions after the iron curtain fell in 1989. Without Washington's vision and leadership, it is doubtful that we would be in Nato and even the European Union today.

We have worked to reciprocate and make this relationship a two-way street. We are Atlanticist voices within Nato and the EU. Our nations have been engaged alongside the United States in the Balkans, Iraq, and today in Afghanistan. While our contribution may at times seem modest compared to your own, it is significant when measured as a percentage of our population and GDP. Having benefited from your support for liberal democracy and liberal values in the past, we have been among your strongest supporters when it comes to promoting democracy and human rights around the world.

Twenty years after the end of the cold war, however, we see that central and eastern European countries are no longer at the heart of American foreign policy. As your administration sets its foreign-policy priorities, our region is one part of the world that Americans have largely stopped worrying about. Indeed, at times we have the impression that US policy was so successful that many American officials have now concluded that our region is fixed once and for all - and that they could "check the box" and move on to other more pressing strategic issues. Relations have been so close that many on both sides assume that the region's transatlantic orientation, as well as its stability and prosperity, would last forever.

A new opening

That view is premature. All is not well either in our region or in the transatlantic relationship. Central and eastern Europe is at a political crossroads and today there is a growing sense of nervousness in the region. The global economic crisis is impacting on our region and, as elsewhere, carries the risk that our societies will look inward and be less engaged with the outside world. At the same time, storm-clouds are starting to gather on the foreign-policy horizon. Like you, we await the results of the EU commission's investigation on the origins of the Russia-Georgia war of August 2008. But the political effect of that war on the region has already been felt. Many countries were deeply disturbed to see the Atlantic alliance stand by as Russia violated the core principles of the Helsinki Final Act (1975), the Charter of Paris (1990), and the territorial integrity of a country that was a member of Nato's Partnership for Peace and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council - all in the name of defending a sphere of influence on its borders.

Despite the efforts and significant contribution of the new members, Nato today seems weaker than when we joined. In many of our countries it is perceived as less and less relevant - and we feel it. Although we are full members, people question whether Nato would be willing and able to come to our defence in some future crises. Europe's dependence on Russian energy also creates concern about the cohesion of the alliance. Your remark at the Nato summit of 3-4 April 2009 on the need to provide credible defence plans for all alliance members was welcome, but not sufficient to allay fears about the alliance´s defence readiness. Our ability to continue to sustain public support at home for our contributions to alliance missions abroad also depends on us being able to show that our own security concerns are being addressed in Nato and close cooperation with the United States

We must also recognise that America's popularity and influence have fallen in many of our countries as well. Public-opinion polls, including the German Marshall Fund's own Transatlantic Trends survey, show that our region has not been immune to the wave of criticism and anti-Americanism that has swept Europe in recent years and which led to a collapse in sympathy and support for the United States during the George W Bush years. Some leaders in the region have paid a political price for their support of the unpopular war in Iraq. In the future they may be more careful in taking political risks to support the United States. We believe that the onset of a new administration has created a new opening to reverse this trend; but it will take time and work on both sides to make up for what we have lost.

A period of transition

In many ways the European Union has become the major factor and institution in our lives. To many people it seems more relevant and important today than the link to the United States. To some degree it is a logical outcome of the integration of central and eastern Europe into the EU. Our leaders and officials spend much more time in EU meetings than in consultations with Washington, where they often struggle to attract attention or make our voices heard. The region's deeper integration in the EU is of course welcome and should not necessarily lead to a weakening of the transatlantic relationship. The hope was that integration of central and eastern Europe into the EU would actually strengthen the strategic cooperation between Europe and America.

However, there is a danger that instead of being a pro-Atlantic voice in the EU, support for a more global partnership with Washington in the region might wane over time. The region does not have the tradition of assuming a more global role. Some items on the transatlantic agenda, such as climate change, do not resonate in the central and eastern European publics to the same extent as they do in western Europe.

Leadership change is also coming in central and eastern Europe. Next to those, there are fewer and fewer leaders who emerged from the revolutions of 1989 who experienced Washington's key role in securing our democratic transition and anchoring our countries in Nato and the EU. A new generation of leaders is emerging who do not have these memories and follow a more "realistic" policy. At the same time, the former communist elites, whose insistence on political and economic power significantly contributed to the crises in many CEE countries, gradually disappear from the political scene. The current political and economic turmoil and the fallout from the global economic crisis provide additional opportunities for the forces of nationalism, extremism, populism, and anti-semitism across the continent but also in some our countries.

This means that the United States is likely to lose many of its traditional interlocutors in the region. The new elites replacing them may not share the idealism - or have the same relationship to the United States - as the generation who led the democratic transition. They may be more calculating in their support of the United States as well as more parochial in their world view. And in Washington a similar transition is taking place as many of the leaders and personalities we have worked with and relied on are also leaving politics.

A time to reinvest

Then there is the issue of how to deal with Russia. Our hopes that relations with Russia would improve and that Moscow would finally fully accept our complete sovereignty and independence after joining Nato and the EU have not been fulfilled. Instead, Russia is back as a revisionist power pursuing a 19th-century agenda with 21st-century tactics and methods. At a global level, Russia has become, on most issues, a status-quo power. But at a regional level and vis-à-vis our nations, it increasingly acts as a revisionist one. It challenges our claims to our own historical experiences. It asserts a privileged position in determining our security choices. It uses overt and covert means of economic warfare, ranging from energy blockades and politically motivated investments to bribery and media manipulation in order to advance its interests and to challenge the transatlantic orientation of central and eastern Europe.

We welcome the "reset" of the American-Russian relations. As the countries living closest to Russia, obviously nobody has a greater interest in the development of the democracy in Russia and better relations between Moscow and the west than we do. But there is also nervousness in our capitals. We want to ensure that too narrow an understanding of western interests does not lead to the wrong concessions to Russia. Today the concern is, for example, that the United States and the major European powers might embrace the Medvedev plan for a "concert of powers" to replace the continent's existing, value-based security structure. The danger is that Russia's creeping intimidation and influence-peddling in the region could over time lead to a de facto neutralization of the region. There are differing views within the region when it comes to Moscow's new policies. But there is a shared view that the full engagement of the United States is needed.

Many in the region are looking with hope to the Barack Obama administration to restore the Atlantic relationship as a moral compass for their domestic as well as foreign policies. A strong commitment to common liberal democratic values is essential to our countries. We know from our own historical experience the difference between when the United States stood up for its liberal democratic values and when it did not. Our region suffered when the United States succumbed to "realism" at the Yalta conference (February 1945). And it benefited when the United States used its power to fight for principle. That was critical during the cold war and in opening the doors of Nato. If a "realist" view had prevailed in the early 1990s, we would not be in Nato today and the idea of a Europe whole, free, and at peace would be a distant dream.

We understand the heavy demands on your administration and on US foreign policy. It is not our intent to add to the list of problems you face. Rather, we want to help by being strong Atlanticist allies in a US-European partnership that is a powerful force for good around the world. But we are not certain where our region will be in five or ten years time given the domestic and foreign policy uncertainties we face. We need to take the right steps now to ensure the strong relationship between the United States and central and eastern Europe over the past twenty years will endure.

We believe this is a time both the United States and Europe need to reinvest in the transatlantic relationship. We also believe this is a time when the United States and central and eastern Europe must reconnect around a new and forward-looking agenda. While recognising what has been achieved in the twenty years since the fall of the iron curtain, it is time to set a new agenda for close cooperation for the next twenty years across the Atlantic.

A new programme

Therefore, we propose the following six steps:

First, we are convinced that America needs Europe and that Europe needs the United States as much today as in the past. The United States should reaffirm its vocation as a European power and make clear that it plans to stay fully engaged on the continent even while it faces the pressing challenges in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the wider middle east, and Asia. For our part we must work at home in our own countries and in Europe more generally to convince our leaders and societies to adopt a more global perspective and be prepared to shoulder more responsibility in partnership with the United States.

Second, we need a renaissance of Nato as the most important security link between the United States and Europe. It is the only credible hard power security guarantee we have. Nato must reconfirm its core function of collective defense even while we adapt to the new threats of the 21st century. A key factor in our ability to participate in Nato's expeditionary missions overseas is the belief that we are secure at home. We must therefore correct some self-inflicted wounds from the past. It was a mistake not to commence with proper Article 5-related defence planning for new members after Nato was enlarged. Nato needs to make the alliance's commitments credible and provide strategic reassurance to all members. This should include contingency planning, prepositioning of forces, equipment, and supplies for reinforcement in our region in case of crisis as originally envisioned in the Nato-Russia Founding Act.

We should also rethink the working of the Nato-Russia Council and return to the practice where Nato member-countries enter into dialogue with Moscow with a coordinated position. When it comes to Russia, our experience has been that a more determined and principled policy toward Moscow will not only strengthen the west's security but will ultimately lead Moscow to follow a more cooperative policy as well. Furthermore, the more secure we feel inside Nato, the easier it will also be for our countries to reach out to engage Moscow on issues of common interest. That is the dual-track approach we need and which should be reflected in the new Nato strategic concept.

Third, the thorniest issue may well be America's planned missile-defence installations. Here too, there are different views in the region, including among our publics which are divided. Regardless of the military merits of this scheme and what Washington eventually decides to do, the issue has nevertheless also become - at least in some countries - a symbol of America's credibility and commitment to the region. How it is handled could have a significant impact on their future transatlantic orientation. The small number of missiles involved cannot be a threat to Russia's strategic capabilities, and the Kremlin knows this. We should decide the future of the programme as allies and based on the strategic plusses and minuses of the different technical and political configurations. The alliance should not allow the issue to be determined by unfounded Russian opposition. Abandoning the programme entirely or involving Russia too deeply in it without consulting Poland or the Czech Republic can undermine the credibility of the United States across the whole region.

Fourth, we know that Nato alone is not enough. We also want and need more Europe and a better and more strategic US-EU relationship as well. Increasingly our foreign policies are carried out through the European Union - and we support that. We also want a common European foreign and defence policy that is open to close cooperation with the United States. We are the advocates of such a line in the EU. But we need the United States to rethink its attitude toward the EU and engage it much more seriously as a strategic partner. We need to bring Nato and the EU closer together and make them work in tandem. We need common Nato and EU strategies not only toward Russia but on a range of other new strategic challenges.

Fifth is energy security. The threat to energy supplies can exert an immediate influence on our nations' political sovereignty also as allies contributing to common decisions in Nato. That is why it must also become a transatlantic priority. Although most of the responsibility for energy security lies within the realm of the EU, the United States also has a role to play. Absent American support, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline would never have been built. Energy security must become an integral part of US-European strategic cooperation. Central and eastern European countries should lobby harder (and with more unity) inside Europe for diversification of the energy mix, suppliers, and transit routes, as well as for tough legal scrutiny of Russia's abuse of its monopoly and cartel-like power inside the EU. But American political support on this will play a crucial role. Similarly, the United States can play an important role in solidifying further its support for the Nabucco pipeline, particularly in using its security relationship with the main transit country, Turkey, as well as the north-south inter-connector of central Europe and LNG terminals in our region.

Sixth, we must not neglect the human factor. Our next generations need to get to know each other, too. We have to cherish and protect the multitude of educational, professional, and other networks and friendships that underpin our friendship and alliance. The US visa regime remains an obstacle in this regard. It is absurd that Poland and Romania - arguably the two biggest and most pro-American states in the CEE region, which are making substantial contributions in Iraq and Afghanistan - have not yet been brought into the visa-waiver programme. It is incomprehensible that a critic like the French anti-globalisation activist José Bové does not require a visa for the United States but former Solidarity activist and Nobel peace prizewinner Lech Walesa does. This issue will be resolved only if it is made a political priority by the president of the United States.

The steps we made together since 1989 are not minor in history. The common successes are the proper foundation for the transatlantic renaissance we need today. This is why we believe that we should also consider the creation of a Legacy Fellowship for young leaders. Twenty years have passed since the revolutions of 1989. That is a whole generation. We need a new generation to renew the transatlantic partnership. A new programme should be launched to identify those young leaders on both sides of the Atlantic who can carry forward the transatlantic project we have spent the last two decades building in central and eastern Europe.

The key to success

In conclusion, the onset of a new administration in the United States has raised great hopes in our countries for a transatlantic renewal. It is an opportunity we dare not miss. We, the authors of this letter, know firsthand how important the relationship with the United States has been. In the 1990s, a large part of getting Europe right was about getting central and eastern Europe right. The engagement of the United States was critical to locking in peace and stability from the Baltic states to the Black Sea. Today the goal must be to keep central and eastern Europe right as a stable, activist, and Atlanticist part of our broader community.

That is the key to our success in bringing about the renaissance in the alliance your administration has committed itself to work for and which we support. That will require both sides recommitting to and investing in this relationship. But if we do it right, the pay off down the road can be very real. By taking the right steps now, we can put it on new and solid footing for the future.

FRESNO, Calif. -- Last month two men and their teenage sons tackled one of the world's most unforgiving summertime hikes: the Grand Canyon's parched and searing Royal Arch Loop. Along with bedrolls and freeze-dried food, the inexperienced backpackers carried a personal locator beacon -- just in case.

In the span of three days, the group pushed the panic button three times, mobilizing helicopters for dangerous, lifesaving rescues inside the steep canyon walls. What was that emergency? The water they had found to quench their thirst "tasted salty."

If they had not been toting the device that works like Onstar for hikers, "we would have never attempted this hike," one of them said after the third rescue crew forced them to board their chopper. It's a growing problem facing the men and women who risk their lives when they believe others are in danger of losing theirs.

Republican Dede Scozzafava endorsed her former Democratic opponent Sunday in the race for an upstate New York congressional seat, shaking up the contest for the second day in a row after exiting the race Saturday.

Scozzafava dropped out after Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman experienced a late-in-the-game surge. The move was expected to consolidate GOP voters behind Hoffman on Tuesday.

But on Sunday, Scozzafava issued a written statement in which she backed Democrat Bill Owens.

"I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same," she said. "In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. Washington/Los Angeles - Police issued an alert for the Jewish community in Los Angeles Thursday after a shooting at a synagogue injured two people on their way to worship there. Both victims were shot in their legs by the attacker as they parked separate cars in a garage under the synagogue and headed for the door leading to the worship area, Deputy Police Chief Michel Moore said in broadcast remarks. The two victims were listed in stable condition at hospital. The synagogue is located in North Hollywood, an area of Los Angeles separate from the Hollywood of film fame. Police apparently issued the alert because the attack could be classified as a hate crime, motivated by the fact that the two men were going to worship.
These are the times in which we live," Moore said. "What we are going to assume is that there is potential for this to escalate.""We are going to assume that this synagogue did play a role in this, and (it's a) reasonable expectation that we alert our other friends in the Jewish community and increase their vigilance," he said.
The suspect had been identified as a black male wearing a hooded sweatshirt, and someone matching that description had been detained, Moore said. But the investigation continued. The suspect used a hand gun, Moore said.

It looks like the cops are still looking for a second suspect who is still at large. The suspect already apprehended was identified with the help of the security video - the Synagogue where the shooting happened has multiple surveillance cameras.

Cops say there is no evidence this was a hate crime. Hmm...let's see: the suspect(s) ambushed the victims in the same place, but the victims didn't arrived toghether and at the same time - they came in two different cars. No report a robbery preceded or followed the shooting from any of the victims. Anyone wanna bet the LAPD will not release the name of the suspect in custody for a very long time?

Luqman Ameen Abdullah looking forward to meet the promised 72 vigins

Luqman Ameen Abdullah, imam of the Masjid Al-Haqq mosque in Detroit, was being arrested on a raft of federal charges including conspiracy, receipt of stolen goods, and firearms offenses.

Charges were also filed against 11 of Abdullah's followers. Eight were in custody Wednesday night awaiting detention hearings today; three remained at large.

A federal complaint filed Wednesday identified Abdullah, 53, also known as Christopher Thomas, as "a highly placed leader of a nationwide radical fundamentalist Sunni group." His black Muslim group calls itself "Ummah," or the brotherhood, and wants to establish a separate state within the United States governed by Sharia law, Interim U.S. Attorney Terrence Berg and Andrew Arena, FBI special agent in charge in Detroit, said in a joint statement.

Early Wednesday afternoon, FBI agents and local police from the Joint Terrorism Task Force surrounded a warehouse and trucking firm on Miller Road near Michigan Avenue where Abdullah and four of his followers were hiding, said Special Agent Sandra Berchtold, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Detroit.
When agents entered the warehouse, four of the men obeyed orders to surrender but Abdullah opened fire and was shot to death, Berchtold said. An FBI dog was also shot and killed, she said.

France is to adopt a series of measures to 'reaffirm pride' in the country and combat Islamic fundamentalism.
They include everybody receiving lessons in the nation's Christian history and children singing the national anthem.
Using words which infuriated ethnic minority groups and Socialist opponents, immigration minister Eric Besson also said he wanted 'foreigners to speak better French'.
He called for all recent arrivals to be monitored by 'Republican godfathers', charged with helping immigrants to integrate better.
His proposed measures contrast sharply with the situation in Britain where 'citizenship education' centres on multicultural diversity.
M Besson, who was born in the former French protectorate of Morocco, suggested a debate on national identity' entitled 'What does it mean to be French?'
He also reignited the debate about face and body-covering Muslim veils, saying they should definitely be banned.

The guard escorted the white-suited intruder past security barriers, where he got a handshake from the UN General Assembly president, Dr. Ali A. Treki of Libya.

The faux fast food chain founder also posed for a picture beneath the assembly's giant UN logo, which overlooks the spot where world leaders address their international counterparts.

"It should not have happened -- that I will stress, and very strongly," said Michele Montas, spokeswoman for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"There was some lapse in security and the individual in question . . . was, on the initiative of one security guard, taken . . . into the UN."

The real Harland "Colonel" Sanders typically wore a white suit and string bow tie, but he has been dead since 1980.

The incident last Thursday apparently was part of a publicity stunt by the fast food chain, which is seeking to promote its grilled alternative to its signature fried chicken. It had dispatched the Sanders look-alike, identified by KFC as Robert Thompson, and also wrote to Mr. Ban.

UN TV crews eventually raised the alarm after being stunned when the impersonator approached cameras set up for diplomats, and began making claims about the extent of the "Grilled Nation." At that point, additional security guards arrived and escorted him from the building.

A video posted on YouTube appears to show a New Jersey elementary school class being taught to sing praises of the "great accomplishments" of President Obama.

The video shows nearly 20 young children taught a song overflowing with campaign slogans and praise for "Barack Hussein Obama," repeatedly chanting the president's name and celebrating his accomplishments, including his "great plans" to "make this country's economy No. 1 again."

Children sing songs praising President Obama's "great accomplishments"
in a video that was reportedly made in a New Jersey elementary school.

The video identifies the kids as students at the B. Bernice Young Elementary School in Burlington, N.J., with taping taking place last June.

The song quotes directly from the spiritual "Jesus Loves the Little Children," though Jesus' name is replaced with Obama's: "He said red, yellow, black or white/All are equal in his sight. Barack Hussein Obama."

Among other lyrics, touting a fair-pay bill Obama signed in January: "He said we must be clear today/Equal work means equal pay."

Just like Obama, Ceausescu started as an extremely popular leader. He promised change from the Stalinist type of communism imposed by the Soviets and people put all their hope in him to liberalize and open the country towards the Western world.

I clearly remember the liberals rooting for the Al Quaeda and Iranian led insurgents in Iraq calling them freedom fighters, how they wanted Bush to lose the war, how they were whining and moaning "bring the troops home" and "no blood for oil", how they were calling Rumsfelfd and Cheney "war criminals", how they sent their "journalists" to embed with the terrorists, how they published military classified information in NY Times putting our troops at risk, how they and their leaders on the Capitol Hill were saying the war is lost, how they were threatening to cut the funds for our troops, how they were saying our troops are "terrorizing civilians in the middle of the night", how they lied and fabricated an entire media scandal with Joe Wilson, his spy wife who wasn't really a spy and the yellowcake that was, after it wasn't, and finally was again, how they made movie after movie in which our troops were presented as a bunch of mentally unstable psychopaths with a thirst for blood?
All that to bring down Bush and make him lose the war - regardless of the cost of our troops lives, their reputation as warriors and America's reputation as a country that cannot win wars anymore. The libs wanted another Vietnam and their hate for Bush was the sole reason behind their treacherous acts.

...remember all that?

My answer to the question do we conservatives want Obama to fail and lose his war in Afghanistan? is NO, we conservatives do not want Obama to lose his war. No matter how much we disagree on pretty much every policy he is trying to implement, a war where the best of us went risking their lives to defend freedom isn't and shouldn't be a political issue, a "payback time" like the libs did it when our troops were fighting the enemy in Iraq.

We are there, we know why we went there and there is no other way out of it other than what Gorgo, king Leonida's wife told him before he left for Termopylae: "come back home with your shield or carried on it"

This an issue where us conservatives differ from liberals like night differs from day and this is where the difference between us and them can be so clearly seen.

The video features Save Our City Band playing "Let It Out", a very inspired and catchy hard rock song. Save Our City is a local band of high school students; two of them are school colleagues of my son, T.P. Jr.

Their sound is really good and I hope they will stick together long enough to become filthy rich and incredibly famous.

My son did the video as an assignment for his movie making class he is taking during his college summer semester. It is a great clip done very professionally and I am not exaggerating one bit when I say both the music and the video are MTV/VH1 material.

Sarah Palin Saturday Double-Header

As some have probably noticed, watching the media wear themselves out barking and snapping at the end of their chain at Sarah Palin has become a rather good spectator sport. Sometimes I play sportscaster here, for the amusement of those who enjoy the sport. Palin has become something of a morality play about the downfall of the Left, and that's good clean fun.

So it is today. We had a double-header last Saturday, one a simple demonstration of character and the other a morality play about political deftness and stupidity, but both breathtaking in their own way. The latter is particularly interesting, juxtaposed as it is beside one particular political folly of the Obama administration. Or, maybe that one is about character too. Maybe they're both connected. You, sportsfans, will have to decide.

Act I: The Anti-Gillibrand

The warm-up game is simply told: Sarah Palin gave a speech on Second Amendment Rights at a meeting of the Alaska Gun Collectors Association. The dinosaur media was quiet as a grave about this, which is interesting--why not take the opportunity to underline the talking point that she's a gun-nut extremist? I mean--*collecting*?

What kept them too busy to take a swipe at their favorite victim? We'll see in Act II. But this particular episode of the ongoing national morality play appears to be about character--simple honesty and loyalty. It's best seen as the opposite of Freshman senator Gillibrand, who seems to have been extra busy shedding her gun-rights connections as fast as Carolyn McCarthy can tell her to. Why not? If you have to run over the whole state of NY, which in practice means anti-gun fortress New York City, it's the sensible thing to do.

Except--some people, non-politicians to be sure, might think that dishonest. In any rate, Sarah Palin having chosen to step onto the national stage from the Frozen wastelands of the North, seems to be choosing the opposite. I'm sure any political consultant would have told her to moderate her views, but perhaps this is simply an example of good political instincts: she could never shed the image of a gun-nut, not in the face of a homicidally insane dinosaur media. The Health Care bill is struggling over the problem of trying to please too many at one time--perhaps there is political wisdom in "dancing with the one that brung ya." It is certain that she could never earn the trust of anti-gun voters, so why risk losing the gunnies for nothing?

Or, it might not be political instincts. It might be that other thing, that outdated idea from Classical Ethics that you should be willing to suffer the consequences of being right and not be ashamed of what you believe and where you came from. Either way, it fairly takes the breath away: a politician deliberately and unabashedly going to a gun-collector function, speaking on Second Amendment rights, and accepting an NRA award. It is so flagrant a violation of the political rule of avoiding controversy and giving offense to anyone that it almost looks like a deliberate invitation to the media to attack.

But it most assuredly means this: Sarah Palin is not going to run away from gunnies for political purposes--she appears to be the anti-Gillibrand. Now, she cannot be the most pro-gun politician in American history; that history includes presidents like Jefferson, who told us that the great object is that every man be armed, Grant, a president of the NRA, and Kennedy, who said we should strive to again be a nation of riflemen. It would hardly be possible to be more pro-gun than the founding generation. But at this point, Sarah Palin may be the most pro-gun politician alive. At any rate, one would have to go outside the main party structure to the likes of Ron Paul to find a serious competitor.

But returning to the other suggestion: why would she invite the media to attack her? Why wave the red flag? Well, I don't really think she did--it would be consistent with her behavior to simply do what she likes and disregard the opinions of detractors. I think that's the real Sarah Palin, and a breathtaking level of disregard she has, too. But that very disregard seems to be at the heart of the Left's terminal case of Palin Derangement. They are the Philosopher Kings. She does not give deference. In Plato's Republic, that is a fatal error. They aren't that far yet, but their hatred of her shows how far they're willing to go in the name of hate and injured pride.

More than one ethical tradition names Pride as a particularly effective path to destruction. The Western tradition receives it from both parents--it is Homozygous for it, you might say. The Hebrews told us that Pride goes before a Fall. The Greeks said that those the Gods would destroy they first made proud. And the apostles told their Greek converts that Pride was the Original Sin. So Pride doesn't play well in that tradition. This first act in Saturday's Palin Play illustrates the source of the wounded pride of the Left; a Little Person, worse an *uneducated* person (which has nothing to do with knowledge and everything to do with ideological certification) refuses to genuflect, and so spectacularly that the Philosopher Kings must crush her not as an opponent, but as a traitor who commits lese majeste. Not for practical reasons, but furiously, incoherently. And, perhaps in the terror that makes men lash out at shadows.

That bring us to Act II, on the theme of Pride and Fall.

The feature game was a bit different; the blogosphere went looking for a lamb and got torn to shreds by a lion. And we can learn a few things by how that happened.

The anti-Palin bloggers seem to have felt a distinct lack of Palin news, and perhaps despairing for a reason to get out of bed in the morning decided to just make some up. OK, well, outright lying is a normal day in the blogosphere, but you'd think they'd have learned back when they lied about the parentage of her baby and all the rest. However, you'd be wrong. Rational people learn from experience, and on the subject of Sarah Palin they are not only not rational, they are stark-staring mad. So like moths to a candle, they returned to her family life, which seems to exercise an unholy power over them. The lie this time was that she and Todd were breaking up.

What's the origin of this dark obsession with family life, so strong that it makes them lack even the human decency that prompted Barak Obama to say that family is off-limits? I think it lies in the sexual mythology of the left. There are many influences there, of course, some contradictory. A powerful one is the Radical Feminist theory that all sex is an exploitative exercise of power over another. There are few traditionalists as prudish as a certain kind of Feminist, as Camille Paglia is not shy to point out. A more popular variant is that it is any vestige of traditional marriage that is exploitative. This is nearly universal; repeated over and over again until it is not even a conscious meme is that the Right has cold, passionless, sterile relationships.

Now, the problem with Sarah Palin is that she threatens that idea; pretty much nobody believes she's one of the asexual women the left has so often put up for election. Worse is the dirty little secret that most of the left's iconic women got where they are because of a man (Hillary is a public figure because of Bill, and the list is astonishingly long from there), while Sarah Palin is genuinely, unquestionably self-made; Todd Palin is not a politician and leans toward the Alaska independence party.

So the other meme is invoked, one that comes from a bizzarely Leftist version of the Victorian woman: a female Conservative who isn't frigid is a slut. This is the constant theme running throughout all of the unseemly coverage of Palin's family. But you might have thought it might them from walking into the trap that the Divorce Lie led them into.

Perhaps the problem is that the left's theory about asexual marriages is in fact true in their experience? Bill Clinton, at least, might agree. And so, somehow, they didn't anticipate the political masterstroke that came when someone finally ran down an apparently bemused Sarah Palin and asked her about the whole thing. Perhaps it's because they'd spent so much time lying about the Palins that they drank their own kool-aid. Or, perhaps it's because we don't ever seem to see public figures who really appear to like their spouses. Perhaps they expected yet another of those polite, ham-fisted denials that never, ever work. Perhaps they expected that they could keep this game going for weeks, enjoying the ever-more-strident and ever-less-believable public denials. Instead, what they got their heads handed to them on a platter:

That may be the most brilliant line we'll see for a long time. Denials never work; we've seen that time and time again that "I love my wife/husband" does nothing to stop the rumors. So what she said was different, something we simply have not heard from a politician and above all a female politician: she said, in essence, "I think my husband is hot."

And that brings us to one of the most interesting, politically incendary things about Sarah Palin: she likes men. Thanks to the Cultural Revolutionaries of the left, we now have a culture that hates men. Television is drowning in the dual image of men as either castrated or evil. Sarah Palin threatens that image, above all because she seems to genuinely like men as men. Being the husband of the governor is almost certain to be the most castrating job in Alaska--unless you happen to be a multiple Iron Dog champion and fishing-boat skipper. At that point, you can wear a unitard and still be manly. And that, it seems, is the kind of man Sarah Palin likes.

Name me *one* woman on the left happily, unapologetically married to a similar man.

I've said before that this is another aspect of Sarah Palin that is endlessly threatening to the left. It isn't primarily women that she attracts--its men. And not because of the left's smear that she looks like a "slutty flight attendent," a sexist pig attitude that they've spread as far as they can. It's because she likes them and doesn't tell them they should be castrated for the good of society.

My guess is that, push come to shove, quite a few of them would die for her. Nothing threatens the left as much as a woman who commands respect because she gives it. If that sort of thing became common, the left would have no gender-theory left. And that's my guess as to why they'll never be able to avoid walking into that kind of trap; because they simply can't imagine what a strong, self-made woman who likes men and chooses to surround herself with them and their environment instead of blaming them for her own shortcomings would think like.

They're right to fear her like the devil. Even moderate and left-leaning men tend to appreciate not being blamed for everything. She has to be stopped and neutralized lest too many of them start to like being treated like men instead of half-domesticated animals. They might enjoy an environment without hate.

The Death Of Mr. Lazarescu: A Movie About Socialized Heatthcare That Should Be Seen By Every American

This is the trailer of a movie that harvested a bunch of film festival awards including Palm D'or but it will never be presented on the big screen in America - it would be impossible because of the people who run Hollywood are slobbering over Obama and would consider this movie "dangerous". Hovever, I hope someone at FOX hears about it and they will pay the rights to have it broadcasted as a Sunday 2 part special.

The movie is called "The Death Of Mr. Lazarescu" and it's a (very) dark Romanian comedy about an old man with a drinking problem and his tribulations in the state run medical system.
After literally an entire night of being sent by ambulance from one hospital to another (I believe 6 hospitals in total) where doctors and medical personnel are overworked, underpaid and completely disinterested in the medical act, Mr. Lazarescu finally dies on a stretcher, victim of a state-run medical system that is as compassionate and caring as the DMV. This film is a cautionary tale against the ills of socialized medicine: people die and nobody cares. What defines this movie is its incredible realism and if seen by enough Americans would cause Obamacare to fail miserably.

This will make you sick: in Iran, it is against the law for young virgin girls to be condemned to death and executed. A former Iranian Basij militia member confesses how he was granted by his superiors the "privilege to marry" young girls and rape them the night before the execution so they could be "legally" killed the next morning.

Here is a real Rara Avis: a liberal newspaper from San Diego publishing an impartial , unbiased and well researched article on California UOC (Unloaded Open Carry) movement.
Kudos to every participant in the interview and kudos to Miss Rosa Jurjevic, she proved herself to be is a great gal and an honest journalist.

Now, why don't we have the same honest and impartial type of journalism practiced at LA/NY Times, CNN, CBS and the rest of the major media outlets?
Is it that hard for the big name newspaper editorialists and TV anchors to do a little research on this issue, leave their fears and personal bias aside and write objective articles based on real information, not anti-gun propaganda?

It’s a beautiful day in Pacific Beach as Nate approaches the bronze pelican statue on the boardwalk. He’s slight and blond, spectacled and clad in jeans and an army-green T-shirt. He squints. The sun’s so bright overhead that he is prompted to spray a fine mist of sunblock over his fair skin to stave off a burn.

I’ve never met Nate before, but I know it’s him (a) because I’ve seen his picture and (b) due to the handgun that sits on a holster against his hip. I’m about to get up from where I’m sitting and introduce myself when someone else beats me to the punch. A scraggly-looking beachgoer, a man of indeterminable age because he is so weather-beaten, approaches.

“What’s that for, bro?” he asks, pointing in the direction of Nate’s gun, a Taurus Tracker .44 Magnum revolver.

Before Nate can answer, the man continues.

“There are surfers at the beach looking to party, and you show up with that? That’s not right. Love life! Be mellow!”

This is when I walk up and introduce myself. The beachgoer looks at me for a moment with wild blue eyes, then looks back at Nate, as Nate is beginning to explain what he will have to reiterate time and time again to concerned and/or interested parties: he is open carrying.

The term “open carrying” refers to one who is in possession of a holstered, unloaded firearm on his or her person, displayed in plain view. Nate begins to explain the legalities of this to the beachgoer when Sean approaches, video camera in tow. In shades, a green shirt with double-breast pockets, green cargo pants, and a Sig Sauer P229 holstered on his hip, Sean looks not unlike a police officer.

The beachgoer does a double take.

“Another one!” he exclaims, as Sean greets us warmly.

The beachgoer, incredulous, excuses himself — with one final stare — to go “get baked.”

An Iowa group once active in lobbying for gun control has disbanded after losing a major grant. The November 1st coalition began after the November 1, 1991 shootings on the University of Iowa campus and was later renamed Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence.

U-I professor Rex Honey served on the board of directors and hopes to revive the group. "I will try in autumn to get some students involved at the University of Iowa, given that the campus was what started our organization in the first place," Honey said. "So, it's not that we don't think there's an issue any longer."

No more money...Honey?

Honey says most recently the group has relied on volunteers to lobby the legislature. "There was a grant with the Joyce foundation for a period of close to a decade from the mid 90s well into this decade, and that funding did end," Honey said.

"That meant we could no longer hire staff, so everything was done on a volunteer basis." The organization recently helped stop a bill to loosen restrictions on county officials who issue gun permits.

As seen last night, on the beach in Huntington.
It was freezing cold and the wind was blowing relentlessly. Talk about global warming.

It was nice, but too damn cold and windy to be enjoyable. As for the going home traffic...it took us one hour to drive the six mile stretch of Beach blvd to the 605 Freeway. If I add another 40 minutes walking and carrying our chairs, cooler and other items we brought with us back and forth from the beach to the place we left our car ... I would not recommend this type of 4th of July celebration to anyone.

The most violent country in Europe: Britain is also worse than South Africa and U.S.

Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.

The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour.

The Tories said Labour had presided over a decade of spiralling violence.

In the decade following the party's election in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 per cent to 1.158million - or more than two every minute.

The figures, compiled from reports released by the European Commission and United Nations, also show:

The UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU.
It has a higher homicide rate than most of our western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The UK has the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU.
It has the fourth highest burglary rate and the highest absolute number of burglaries in the EU, with double the number of offences than recorded in Germany and France.
But it is the naming of Britain as the most violent country in the EU that is most shocking. The analysis is based on the number of crimes per 100,000 residents.

In the UK, there are 2,034 offences per 100,000 people, way ahead of second-placed Austria with a rate of 1,677.

The U.S. has a violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 92 and South Africa 1,609.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling said: 'This is a damning indictment of this government's comprehensive failure over more than a decade to tackle the deep rooted social problems in our society, and the knock on effect on crime and anti-social behaviour.

'We're now on our fourth Home Secretary this parliament, and all we are getting is a rehash of old initiatives that didn't work the first time round. More than ever Britain needs a change of direction.'

The figures, compiled by the Tories, are considered the most accurate and up-to-date available.

But criminologists say crime figures can be affected by many factors, including different criminal justice systems and differences in how crime is reported and measured.

In Britain, an affray is considered a violent crime, while in other countries it will only be logged if a person is physically injured.

There are also degrees of violence. While the UK ranks above South Africa for all violent crime, South Africans suffer more than 20,000 murders each year - compared with Britain's 921 in 2007.

Experts say there are a number of reasons why violence is soaring in the UK. These include Labour's decision to relax the licensing laws to allow round-the-clock opening, which has led to a rise in the number of serious assaults taking place in the early hours of the morning.

But Police Minister David Hanson said: 'These figures are misleading.
Levels of police recorded crime statistics from different countries are simply not comparable since they are affected by many factors, for example the recording of violent crime in other countries may not include behaviour that we would categorise as violent crime.

'Violent crime in England and Wales has fallen by almost a half a peak in 1995 but we are not complacent and know there is still work to do. That is why last year we published 'Saving lives. Reducing harm. Protecting the public. An Action Plan for Tackling Violence 2008-11'.'

The timing of the Europe-wide violence figures is a blow for Mr Johnson, who will today seek to reassert Labour's law and order credentials.

In his first major speech on crime since becoming Home Secretary, Mr Johnson is expected to promise a concerted crack down on antisocial behaviour.

He wants to set up a website to allow the public to see what is taking place in their neighbourhood, such as the number of louts who have been served with Asbos.

Mr Johnson is also known to support early intervention to stop children going off the rails.
